Sangiovese, is one Italy's two most important wine grapes (with Nebbiolo being the other) and is the most-planted grape in Italy. The Sangiovese grape is not only used to make Italy's world-famous Chiantis, but it's also the base for the cherished Super Tuscan wines, and the unbelievable wines of Brunello de Montalcino.
Not surprisingly, Sangiovese wine pairs wonderfully with Italian foods like pasta with red sauce, as well as with rare steaks, and rich chicken and/or mushroom dishes. Of course, it's also wonderful by itself!

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022 The 2019 Al Passo is rich, ample and generous. Healthy dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon turbocharge Sangiovese, adding depth and structure. Red-fleshed Sangiovese fruit emerges over time. The 2019 is deep and quite fleshy, but it also has a good deal of brightness to balance some of its more overt leanings. (Bruce Sanderson)
JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/4/2021 The 2016 Brunello is aromatic with fresh rose petal, confected red cherry, and forest floor. The palate is somewhat more savory with dried tomato leaf, tart cherry fruit, and orange peel. Its angular tannins build in tandem with its acidity and age-worthy austerity. This wonderful, tension-driven wine by Caterina Sacchet can be enjoyed over the next 20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021 There is a warmth to the ripeness in this red, like sunbaked earth or bricks, surrounding the core of cherry and berry flavors. Very fresh and long, with iron, tobacco and wild herbs lingering as the rugged tannins exert their influence. Best from 2024 through 2042. 2,800 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022 Offers fine depth to the cherry, plum and woodsy aromas, with iron, tobacco and herb flavors. Shows solid structure and lingers nicely on the finish. Drink now through 2027. 450,000 cases made, 15,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Medium to full body with round, refined tannins and a flavorful finish. Transparent and linear. Lively at the end. Excellent energy. Drink or hold.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 A silky, open-knit wine, the 2019 Chianti Classico Ama is wonderfully alluring from the very first taste. This gracious, aromatically expressive Chianti Classico from the estate’s young vines, will drink beautifully upon release.SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021 Dark fruit notes of blackberry, blueberry and black currant infuse the velvety texture, while a solid base of tannins lies beneath. Medium in body, with lovely aromatic nuance, the 2019 is already showing some signs of development. For that reason, I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later. (Antonio Galloni)SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022 Boasts black cherry and kirsch flavors that permeate the glycerol texture, shaded by black pepper, earth and sage. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Savory. Drink now or hold.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022 The 2020 Chiarti Classico Berardenga is a classic Fèlsina wine. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for 10–15 years. Classic Fèlsina savory, floral and tobacco accents play off a core of sweet Sangiovese fruit. This heady, strapping wine has a ton to offer. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous aromatic presence. (Audrey Frick)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2023 Elegant, with a vibrant structure shoring up cherry, raspberry, plum, earth and underbrush flavors. Turns compact on the finish, yet bright acidity and vestiges of the fruit keep this focused. Best from 2025 through 2040. 27,500 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is dusty and floral on the nose, with a mix of dried black cherries, shaved cedar and wild flowers forming its inviting bouquet. This is round, almost juicy in feel, with cooling mineral tones and brisk acidity that maintains an unexpectedly energetic character, as tart wild berry fruits slowly saturate. The 2018 finishes with grippy tannins, yet also surprisingly fresh, leaving nuances of red licorice to slowly taper off. This really took me by surprise, as I’m so accustomed to Castelgiocondo being such a brooding and powerful wine in its youth, but that is the magic of the 2018 vintage. (Eric Guido)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2016 Enticing aromas of flowers, cherry, mineral and leather lead off, with woodsy mushroom notes. There’s plenty of fruit on the palate, with a firm structure, a vibrant profile and excellent length. Drink now through 2024. 3,000 cases made.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022 Cedar, dried flowers, cherries and spices on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with very polished, refined tannins and excellent length. This has gorgeous structure. Needs two or three years to soften. Excellent potential. Try after 2023.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021 The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva is a bold powerful wine. Black cherry, iron, tar, menthol and licorice give the 2018 a super-distinctive, wild profile. There is plenty of depth and volume. In 2018, the Riserva offers a decidedly wild, gamy expression of Sangiovese. Best of all, the Riserva remains a fabulous value. (Antonio Galloni)SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021 A straightforward red, offering cherry, strawberry and light earth flavors on an open-knit profile, with moderate length. Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Drink now. 26,000 cases made, 17,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, December 1, 2022 Intense aromas of black cherries, lavender and spice, such as nutmeg. Some sandalwood and bark, too. Full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and tannins for the vintage. Rather chewy, suggesting that additional bottle age is needed. Try after 2026. (James Suckling)VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 Depths of dark, balsamic-tinged black cherry, plum sauce and autumnal spice make the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino impossible to ignore. This is velvety to the core, nearly opulent in feel, with a dense wave of ripe red fruits complemented by nuances of sweet lavender and tobacco. It leaves the palate clenched with fine tannins and primary concentration, creating a classic sensation that transcends the vintage. Nearly a minute goes by, and hints of cocoa and sweet herbs continue to resonate. Wow! Production at the Pertimali estate was down by 20% due to the spring frost, and the decision was made to place all of the juice usually intended for the Riserva into the straight Brunello, the result being one of the top wines of the vintage. (Eric Guido)JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/6/2023 Rich with compact and velvety layers, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino offers fleshy aromas of fig, black licorice, mocha, and roasted sage. It is full-bodied and displays more freshness and transparency on the palate, although it remains fully ripe, with black cherry, plum, turned soil, and macerated violets. It has full and present ripe tannins, a hint of crushed rock, and a saline, savory finish. With its liqueur-like richness throughout, this is a fantastic expression, but it needs a couple of years in the cellar before drinking over the following 10. (Audrey Frick)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2023 Ripe and juicy, this red reveals plum, cherry, earth, tobacco and menthol aromas and flavors. Well-structured, delivering dense, dusty tannins and ample fruit to match, with a long, complex finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 4,000 cases made, 1,250 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2014 The 2012 Torrione is seriously beautiful. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and mocha notes flesh out in a supple, radiant wine endowed with gorgeous depth and pure resonance. All the elements meld together in this gracious, juicy Sangiovese-based red from Petrolo. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend.SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2014 Effusive aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry and peony highlight this elegant red. Well-integrated tannins amp up the structure and density on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2023. 3,750 cases made.
