Nebbiolo, along with Sangiovese, is one of the two quintessential grapes of Italy, and with good reason. The Nebbiolo grape is responsible for some of the world's most celebrated wines, including the fabulous wines of Barolo. You'll find Barolos in almost any serious collector's wine cellar, and the Nebbiolo grape rewards the collector with age as its complexities mature.
Nebbiolo is sometimes described as an "iron fist in a velvet glove." It's elegant, like the Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, yet structured like the fine Cabernets of Bordeaux. And yet, not other grape is quite as tied to its terroir as the Nebbiolo grape. Most of the best Nebbiolo wines come from the Italian communes of Barbaresco and Barolo, while attempts to recreate its magic in other countries have not proven nearly as successful.

There is plenty of heft to the 2016, but at the same time, I also find an element of refinement and nuance that Sorì San Lorenzo has rarely, if ever, shown. Black cherry, cloves, menthol, licorice, gravel and incense are some of the many aromas and flavor that meld together in this dramatic and dramatically beautiful Barbaresco from the Gaja family. The Sorì San Lorenzo just explodes on the finish, with an array of aromas, flavors and textures that will leave readers weak at the knees. The 2016 is an outrageously beautiful, vivid wine of real gravitas and power.RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Aug 2019 If the Barbaresco Costa Russi expresses itself with purity and grace, the 2016 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo struts out stacked and tall. It has firmer textural support and is not as timid or as withholding as the Costa Russi. The Sorì San Lorenzo site is located closest to the warm air currents that travel down the Tanaro River valley, and this vineyard site is always the first to ripen and be harvested. You get a stronger mineral note here with iron rust, pencil shaving and potting soil intertwined with the primary fruit, showing dazzlingly intricate complexity and depth. This vineyard site suffered in the 2017 vintage from some hail damage that hit on July 19. The quality of fruit is expected to be good, Gaia Gaja tells me, but yields will be reduced next year.SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020 Features sweet ripe cherry, plum, eucalyptus, tobacco and spice flavors. JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 Coming from Verduno, the 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is nuanced with spices and floral elegance and is pure and ripe with raspberry liqueur, rose petal, peppercorn, and cedar. This medium-bodied red is svelte and refined while having good concentration and drive, with notes of pomegranate, orange zest, and dusty earth. Zesty and lifted, this will take another couple of years to open and mature into the graceful wine it is destined to become. Drink 2025–2040. (Audrey Frick)
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019 Luciano Sandrone expected this would be a beautiful year for Nebbiolo, with fruit showing the qualities of an important wine all throughout the growing season and right up to harvest. And yes, the 2015 Barolo le Vigne did turn out to be a great vintage, with a full aromatic array of perfumed rose, lavender and violet. For all of its generosity and expressiveness, with just a beautiful bouquet that sings out a seductive mezzo-soprano aria, be forewarned that in the mouth this is followed by rigidity and nervousness. That explosive bouquet might mislead you into thinking this is a rather evolved wine, but you certainly feel its youth on the palate. To be frank, this was an easy year to make wine, and it’s not a big surprise that this edition of le Vigne turned out to be as classic and as good as it is. It should get even better with time.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019 The 2015 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of pure and extreme grace. Silky and nuanced on the palate, with tremendous character, the 2015 is all class. Rose petal, mint and sweet red berry fruit are laced together in this super-expressive Barolo. Medium in body, with radiant fruit and brisk tannins, the 2015 Le Vigne is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. Today, the 2015 is decidedly reticent. I have seen Le Vigne open up with time in bottle. I imagine that will be the case here as well, although the wine is quite closed down at this stage. Vineyard sources are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà-Bas is impressive. Dark and resonant in the glass, with terrific depth, the Rabajà-Bas is a deeply intriguing wine. Black cherry, licorice, smoke, tobacco and dark spice bring out the more virile side of Nebbiolo. A Barbaresco of breadth and power, the 2017 is so expressive today.

The wine shows classic notes of tar and licorice, with smooth tannins and ripe dark-fruit flavors that make it approachable in its youth.
VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019 The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a fabulous, incredibly complete wine that soars out of the glass with explosive structure and vertical lift. The tannins are very much present, but also matched beautifully by the wine’s aromatic intensity and overall drive. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, plum and mocha add darker shades of nuance. In 2016, Sorì Tildìn is a bit more brooding and bigger than it often is, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. It is quite simply a majestic wine of real grandeur and total class, but it is not obvious. Sorì Tildìn will appeal most to readers who understand what the truest essence of Nebbiolo is all about. Incredible on the palate, with medium to full body, an incredible, seamless texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a monster finish. The tannins here are unquestionably on another level and are perfectly ripe, and this just about off-the-charts 2016 has a Grand Cru Red Burgundy-like texture, elegance, and stature. This bottle didn’t hit prime time until the second day, so either give bottles a healthy decant or, even better, 5–7 years in a cold cellar. We’re talking about smaller fruit here, with plums, cassis, blackberry and plenty of power. Everything came to perfect maturity in this 2016 vintage, representing that rare merge of quantity and quality. This is what you get from the dense soils of the warm, south-facing Sorì Tildìn site and similar ones where the terrain can keep the moisture locked in. La Spinetta’s 2016 Barolo Campè Vürsù draws its fruit from the upper part of the vineyard where the topsoils are shallow and the vines are oldest, aged 70+ years. Fruit comes from a three-hectare site with beautiful southern exposures. This beautiful wine opens to a velvety and dark appearance with dark garnet highlights. To the nose, it produces dark primary fruit with dried blackberry and plum, but you also get savory notes of spice, tar and dried licorice root. The wine shows a firm backbone, but the tannins are nicely tucked into the greater fiber and power of the mouthfeel. A cascade of tannins follows, enveloping the mouth in chewy sensations from top to bottom, flanked in dried-berry flavors. Full-bodied and dense, but agile and inviting. Drink from 2026.

Dark and brooding in the glass, the Prapò expresses all of the natural weight of this Serralunga cru, but with more overt fruit and a bit less tannic heft than is often the case. That should make the 2017 a real pleasure to drink, with just a handful of years in the cellar. Succulent black cherry, licorice, menthol, gravel and cured meats build into the heady finish.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 This is a bold and opulent wine that sources its fruit from Serralunga d’Alba. The Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Prapò delivers rich fruit weight, with plummy black fruit, blackcurrant, iron ore, spice and cured spice. The vines at this site were replanted in 2008 and the fruit shows depth and authenticity, thanks to their advancing age. You get lingering mineral tones of rust and iron that marry this wine to a sense of place. The finish is bold but moderate in length.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2015 The 2008 Ghemme Collis Carellae is a real stunner. Rose petal, mint, violets, sweet red cherries and licorice are some of the many notes that blossom in a firm, classically built wine that will make lovers of traditionally made Nebbiolos weak at the knees. Vibrant, translucent and deeply expressive, the 2008 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. I imagine the 2008 will reward readers with another 15–20 years of exceptional drinking. They also show a greater presence of clay and limestone. The 2014 Barolo Margheria is made with fruit from 50-year-old vines and shows compact and dense aromatic intensity as a result. The bouquet is constructed on top of thick layers of dark fruit, dried cherry, balsam herb and crushed mineral. The 2014 mouthfeel, however, veers toward the lean and compact side of the Barolo spectrum.

The Azelia 2016 Barolo Margheria offers that classic twofold punch of power and elegance that is so nicely highlighted in wines from Serralunga d’Alba. For sure, the textural fiber of this wine is richer, denser and tighter than the others, and there is an attractive point of inner black fruit energy and tension that I did not find to the same extent in the Cerretta. If that wine is more focused on the base tones, this wine hits those high tones with better precision. The Margheria vines are 60 years old on average and planted in clayey and calcareous soils that render minerality to the wine. Some 6,100 bottles were rolled out.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 The 2016 Barolo Margheria shows the natural weight and gravitas of Serralunga in its dark flavor profile and textural resonance. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, mint, chalk and bright saline notes are all laced throughout. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 possesses tremendous persistence and class to burn. Wilder suggestions of sage and lavender add savory top notes, while searing tannins punctuate the finish.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2017 Another highlight in this range, the 2013 Barolo San Rocco is utterly beguiling. The bouquet alone is striking, but it is the wine’s total balance that is most appealing today. Tasted next to the Margheria, the San Rocco is deeper, darker and more overtly powerful, with a greater sense of Serralunga tannic clout. Dark cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and sweet spices give the San Rocco much of its exotic personality. The San Rocco was aged in French oak barrels, with about 10% new wood.RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2017 Azelia has hit it out of the ballpark with the three single-vineyard Barolos presented. The 2013 Barolo San Rocco is a rich and penetrating wine that keeps a sharp focus on balance and harmony all the while. This vineyard is located in Serralunga d’Alba, and the vines were planted in the early 1990s. The bouquet is robust and forthcoming with dark fruit, spice and cured leather. But ethereal notes of smoke, tar and licorice also lift delicately from the bouquet. You get both power and elegance with this cellar-worthy wine.
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2016 The 2013 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a real head-turner. Crystalline and utterly vivid in its expression of Nebbiolo, the 2013 is all class. Stylistically, the Costa Russi is closest to the straight Barbaresco, but it has a little more mid-palate sweetness and density. Bright floral and minty notes add lift on the chiseled, expressive finish. The Costa Russi is the star of the show this year, considering it is the least pedigreed of Gaja’s three single-vineyard sites. In the past, this wine was blended with 5% Barbera, but this is no longer the case starting now. For the first time in recent memory, we are tasting a pure expression of Nebbiolo as harvested from the rows of vines in the Costa Russi cru, located directly below Sorì Tildìn at the base of the Barbaresco village. The vines are over 65-years-old and are planted in limestone clay and marl soils. Costa Russi is known for delicate, light-bodied wines that exhibit floral aromas of rose hip and lavender, as well as darker fruit tones at the back. Those qualities are beautifully evident in this vintage. The mouthfeel is characterized by a firm sense of tannic structure that is common to all of Gaja’s new releases in the 2013 vintage.

In 2016, Costa Russi has an extra touch of mid-palate sweetness that gives the wine its sense of immediacy. Succulent red cherry, rosewater, kirsch, mint and dried flowers meld together in the glass. Soft and sensual, with tons of allure, Costa Russi is another winner from Gaja. Best from 2023 through 2045. 175 cases imported.RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Aug 2019 The 2016 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a very botanical wine in terms of its aromas, with lovely perfumes of rose, elderflower, sambuco and anise seed, along with a touch of glycerine. It then follows up with some sweetness that feels very embracing in this wine. This is the more ephemeral, delicate and floral member of the extended Barbaresco family from Gaja, with a crunchy tannic bite, but nothing too severe. There is a really good vitality and energy to this very expressive wine. Costa Russi remains the smallest of Gaja’s single-vineyard wines, and Gaia Gaja warns that there will be considerably less of it starting with the 2017 vintage. Production for this wine had always varied greatly to begin with, due in part to the fragile nature of the 80-year-old vines, but about half of those were removed and replanted. It will be a while before the new vines are old enough to go online. So, with some 10,000 bottles made in 2016 and 6,000 bottles in 2015, we can count on those numbers to be split by half over the next three to four years, for sure.
