RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Jun 2013 A banner wine for Gaja, the 2010 Sori San Lorenzo brings the infinite and ethereal aromas associated with Nebbiolo into startling focus and clarity. Again, like the Sori Tildin, the structure and tannic firmness of the wine will carry the wine forward over the years and decades ahead. It demands much more time until it fully blossoms. I walked through the San Lorenzo vineyard with Gaia Gaja and she showed me some of their recent activity. Every second row is planted with barley that acts as a natural rototiller given its aggressive root system. Borrowing other “New World” ideas, they’ve started compost piles with Californian red worms and are using (with less success, I’m told) wooden tree boxes to repopulate the birds. All of this must seem very odd to the neighbors. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2040.VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2014 The 2010 Sorì San Lorenzo jumps from the glass with lavender, violets, plums, smoke and licorice, all in a lifted, precise style built on finesse. The tannins are remarkably sweet and polished for such a young wine. The pulsating fruit and sense of structure are reminiscent of the 1999, but here, there is perhaps a little more finesse and slightly more compelling balance.
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 Coming from the rose clone, grown entirely in the sandy and calcareous soils of the Roero region, the 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo is pale ruby and offers a fresh perfume of ripe strawberries, spice, and pressed red flowers. It is medium-bodied, with fine tannins, and its fruit and violet florality coax through the palate along with fresh apricot. Elegant and approachable, it maintains the essence of Nebbiolo without the austerity. I personally enjoy this as a youthful drinking wine for over the next 5 years or so. (Audrey Frick)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2021 Freisa Bonina is a beautiful wine full of character. Punchy red fruit, spice, orange peel, mint and rose petal build in a potent, driving wine with enough character to drink well for a number of years. I love the energy and tension here. Just bottled, the 2021 is a knock-out. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Starda is a blend taken from estate vineyards in both Neive and Alba. It offers up gorgeous scents of raspberry, crushed flowers, mint, spice, white pepper and citrus, all in a translucent style that is hugely appealing. There’s terrific energy and drive here. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022 The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo is fabulous. Crushed berries, spice, mint, dried rose petal and licorice are beautifully delineated. The purity of the flavors is remarkable. Vineyard sites are Berri (35%), plus non-estate vineyards in Levice, Alta Langa (60% - leased) and Monticello d’Alba, Roero (5% - purchased fruit). The 2021 was vinified and aged entirely in cement, and yet it has plenty of structure. It is a terrific choice for readers on a budget, or even readers not on a budget! (Antonio Galloni)WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22 This wine’s dark cherry and raspberry flavors are fleshy and ripe, driven by lively acidity as the wine takes on notes of thyme and tobacco leaf. Serve it at cellar temperature to balance the wine’s bold alcohol.
