Nebbiolo, along with Sangiovese, is one of the two quintessential grapes of Italy, and with good reason. The Nebbiolo grape is responsible for some of the world's most celebrated wines, including the fabulous wines of Barolo. You'll find Barolos in almost any serious collector's wine cellar, and the Nebbiolo grape rewards the collector with age as its complexities mature.
Nebbiolo is sometimes described as an "iron fist in a velvet glove." It's elegant, like the Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, yet structured like the fine Cabernets of Bordeaux. And yet, not other grape is quite as tied to its terroir as the Nebbiolo grape. Most of the best Nebbiolo wines come from the Italian communes of Barbaresco and Barolo, while attempts to recreate its magic in other countries have not proven nearly as successful.

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Parussi is a classic Castiglione Falletto Barolo. Sweet floral notes and bright, red berry fruit open first as the 2017 shows off its considerable charms. Medium in body and silky (for the year), with exceptional balance, the 2017 Parussi is stellar. This is an unbelievably classy Barolo.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Massolino 2017 Barolo Parussi is a standout in this portfolio of wines mainly from Serralunga d’Alba. Thanks to its protective positioning at the center of the appellation where it draws upon the soils and exposures of the surrounding areas, Castiglione Falletto performs very nicely in a vintage that saw extreme weather with frost and drought. What the Parussi brings to the table is more focus and sharpness, with red fruits, crushed rose, cooling limestone mineral and some dried mint.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 This wine represents a blend of fruit from Arborina and Gattera in La Morra and Castelletto in Monforte d’Alba. The Mauro Veglio 2017 Barolo opens to a light garnet-ruby color with a glossy shine and a classic aromatic profile of wild berry, tar, licorice and crushed blue flowers. The 2017 vintage is a bit thinner in the mid-palate, but this expression demonstrates good tannic management. Production stands at 25,000 bottles.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo is a delicious entry-level offering. All the elements just fall into place effortlessly. Sweet red cherry, cedar, dried flowers and spice give this lilting, open-knit Barolo lovely aromatic and flavor complexity.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Castelletto is fabulous. It is also the wine in this range that feels the least marked by heat. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and lavender all grace this beautifully translucent, expressive Barolo. There is some tannin that needs to soften — this is Monforte after all — but all the elements are impeccably balanced.RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Dried flowers, potpourri and aromas of crushed stone open the bouquet of the 2017 Barolo Castelletto. This is a nicely balanced expression of Nebbiolo that shows some heat, intensity and density but also leaves room for nuanced tones of spice, crushed white pepper and limestone. This is an elegant and lasting wine from the not-always-easy 2017 vintage. In the end, this edition of the Castelletto offers a terrific interpretation of a hot and dry vintage. This was another release of 6,500 bottles.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019 The 2015 Barolo Gattera is the darkest and most concentrated of these wines from Mauro Veglio. It shows thick texture and richness with some pretty floral and raspberry notes and cherry sweetness on the close. This wine is the most equipped to travel the long haul. About 8,500 bottles are produced.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019 Another attractive wine in the range, the 2015 Barolo Gattera is ample, creamy and expansive, with all of the textural resonance that is so typical of wines from this La Morra site. Dark cherry, chocolate, licorice and spice are some of the many aromas and flavors that build in a racy, succulent Barolo that will drink well pretty much upon release. As is so often the case, the Gattera is the softest of the Veglio Barolos.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020 The 2017 Gattinara is terrific. It will also give readers something to drink without waiting decades. In 2017, the Gattinara is a bit richer than it often is — the result of the warm dry year — but its profile is super-classic. Sweet pipe tobacco, mint, dried herbs, licorice, dried cherry and Alpine herbs fill out its ample frame effortlessly. I would give the 2017 a few years in bottle, but it won’t need more than that to start drinking well. In 2017, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his vineyard-designates. Instead, all the best lots went into the straight Gattinara, an overachieving wine that delivers the goods. I don’t expect the 2017 will be among the most long-lived wines here, but that will hardly be an issue for most readers.
VN96+96+ pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020 Tasted next to the Valferana, the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino is much more nervous in feel. Iron, dried herbs, sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper and earthy notes give the Molsino a good deal of aromatic complexity to match its intense, saline-infused minerality. Today, though, the tannins and acids are almost overpowering. Readers will find an old-school, classically austere Gattinara that needs 10–15 years to be at its best. The 2016 is an absolute jewel of a wine, but it should be purchased only by readers with either very good genes are a ton of optimism regarding their own longevity.RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021 This wine was not produced in 2017, so the next vintage in this mini vertical is the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino. The name “Molsino” is a dialect derivative of the Italian word for “soft,” and it comes from the pretty contours of the hills that characterize the Gattinara landscape and the warm, lightly windy and sunny microclimate that this specific growing site enjoys. Indeed, the wine offers rich fruit flavors of wild berry and blackcurrant with solid structure and firmness. Pretty notes of pressed violet, earth and iron ore also appear. This Nebbiolo plays a hand similar to Barolo in terms of its inner power and its superior aging potential.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Barolo is a gorgeous wine and also a terrific introduction to this range. Medium in body, with captivating inner perfume, the 2019 is sensual and inviting right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, spice, lavender and rose petal appear later, adding layers of nuance. All the elements are impeccably balanced throughout. What a total delight this is. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022 Always a standout wine, the Oddero 2018 Barolo Brunate is a complete wine, and I use that word specifically because it shows balance, freshness, length and structure. It has all the basics of an age-worthy Nebbiolo that promises to increase in complexity and depth with more cellar age. At this young stage, the bouquet is singing with dark fruit, cherry, spice and sweet earth. (Monica Larner)VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 What a delight it is to taste Oddero’s 2018 Barolo Brunate. A glorious wine, the Oddero Brunate is one of the very few wines in this vintage that possesses real mid-palate depth and notable textural intensity. It is the smallest production wine here. I imagine that the slightly smaller cask used for this wine was an advantage in giving the 2018 a bit of extra flesh that is missing in this vintage. What impresses me most about the 2018, though, is its freshness and the primary intensity of the fruit. Iron, smoke, tobacco, dried herbs, chalk and a whole range of savory accents develop over time, rounding things out in style. What a wine! (Antonio Galloni)JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 Pouring a jeweled ruby, the 2018 Barolo Brunate needs some air on opening before revealing significant depth and balance for this cooler and wet vintage, with notes of balsamic herbs, black raspberry, and mineral earth. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins, pure red cherry fruit fills the palate, and the wine has a long floral finish with rose petals and a stony texture. It is deserving of at least another year in the cellar. Drink 2024–2040. (Audrey Frick)WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2022 Camphor, violet, oak-driven spice and woodland berry aromas shape the nose. Lithe and polished, the full-bodied palate offers ripe Morello cherry, coconut, vanilla and star anise set against fine-grained tannins that leave a drying close. (Kerin O’Keefe)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2019 Hay, freshly cut grass and loam aromas segue to a core of cherry that pulls this together. The sweet fruit handles the burly tannins well, ending in a cascade of eucalyptus and tobacco notes. Best from 2023 through 2043. 920 cases made.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc is another terrific release from this leading estate. In fact, this wine delivers a big step up in terms of intensity and clarity, with a seamless integration of dark fruit, spice, balsam herb and sweet cherry. It also shows enormous clarity and definition, thanks to subtle touches of limestone and mineral. This wine figures high on a list of the best Barolos made in 2017.VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another gorgeous wine in the line up from the Scavino family. Readers will find a Barolo that is more nuanced and less bombastic than in the past. Bric del Fiasc has plenty of power on its own, so this style works so well. Dried rose petal, mint, spice, kirsch and iron all blossom with a bit of coaxing. I can’t wait to see how it ages.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 Aromatic, this red offers rose, plum, cherry, licorice, leather and spicy tobacco notes. Firm, yet surprisingly open and balanced at this stage. Remains fresh and long on the savory finish. Best from 2024 through 2038. 708 cases made, 75 cases imported.
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 Leather, vanilla and spice aromas are expressive, yet underneath there are subtle notes of rose, strawberry, cherry and iron. As this red evolves on the palate, it firms up, remaining harmonious and resonant through the lingering finish. Eucalyptus and wild herb elements emerge with air. Compelling. Best from 2025 through 2045. 500 cases made, 60 cases imported.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Showing resolve and determination, the Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Ravera (with fruit from Novello) offers more concentration and a much darker quality of fruit with blackberry and plum. Ravera gives us density and power and a generous display of dark spice with tobacco and toasted hazelnut. Despite that extra muscle and heft, I love how the tannins are so expertly integrated into the fruit.WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21 Having bought a 6.75-acre Ravera plot in 2015, the Scavino family now owns vineyards in 20 different crus of Barolo; this one is their highest-elevation holding and the last to be harvested. The wine exhibits the freshness typical of Ravera even in warmer vintages. Notes of menthol amplify that freshness, as do the cool, mineral tannins that keep the ripe red- and black-cherry flavors taut and precise.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 Aromatically more expressive and ripe with red flowers and fruits, the 2019 Barolo Ravera is more exuberant and open at this stage, with candied cherry, menthol, and sweet balsamic herbs. The palate takes a more savory and coiled stance at this youthful stage, with iron-rich earth, grenadine, and salted orange. Building tannins are in concert with a persistent spine of acidity that will need time to loosen its grip, but this is a fantastic wine to hold and drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022 The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is especially broad and thick in texture. It feels generous to the senses, wrapping thickly over the palate with a pretty mix of firm tannins and soft fruit fiber. These elements help to increase both the volume and the persistence of this classic wine. There is some dryness on the finish (and 15% alcohol), and you also taste crushed mineral and stone. Production is 10,000 bottles. I give this wine an edge in terms of future aging potential.VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the stand-outs in this range. It shows the piercing tannins typical of this site, and yet has more than enough fruit to balance those tannins, certainly moreso than wines like the Rabajà. This exposed site benefits from cooling winds from the north, clearly a benefit in 2017. Even in the early going, the balance here is terrific. In 2017, the Montefico is one of the clear stand outs in the range.
RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022 One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco’s portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind.
