Nebbiolo, along with Sangiovese, is one of the two quintessential grapes of Italy, and with good reason. The Nebbiolo grape is responsible for some of the world's most celebrated wines, including the fabulous wines of Barolo. You'll find Barolos in almost any serious collector's wine cellar, and the Nebbiolo grape rewards the collector with age as its complexities mature.
Nebbiolo is sometimes described as an "iron fist in a velvet glove." It's elegant, like the Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, yet structured like the fine Cabernets of Bordeaux. And yet, not other grape is quite as tied to its terroir as the Nebbiolo grape. Most of the best Nebbiolo wines come from the Italian communes of Barbaresco and Barolo, while attempts to recreate its magic in other countries have not proven nearly as successful.

JD93+93–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 The 2019 Barolo Berri was tasted from two barrels, one of which utilized whole bunches in the fermentation. While both offered freshness and purity, the second barrel offered more significant spice in its profile, with more depth of fruit, and is firmly structured at this stage. The components are compelling and should make for a wonderful finished blend in a few years’ time. (Audrey Frick)VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Barolo Berri is tightly wound and austere in the early going. Crushed red berry fruit, iron, dried herbs and white pepper give the Berri a striking aromatic top register. The tannins are a bit nervy, though, so a few years in bottle are warranted. Frost decimated the crop at Torriglione, which is why this wine (typically the Barolo del Comune di La Morra) is Berri in 2019. To be exact, there is 4% Torriglione, as that was the wine used for topping. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023 Coming from Verduno, the 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is nuanced with spices and floral elegance and is pure and ripe with raspberry liqueur, rose petal, peppercorn, and cedar. This medium-bodied red is svelte and refined while having good concentration and drive, with notes of pomegranate, orange zest, and dusty earth. Zesty and lifted, this will take another couple of years to open and mature into the graceful wine it is destined to become. Drink 2025–2040. (Audrey Frick)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022 The 2019 Barbaresco Bric Balin is distinguished by lots of wild berry fruit and a spicy hint of crushed white pepper that gives lift and immediacy to the bouquet. The tannins are quite firm in this wine and require more time to soften with bottle age. However, Bric Balin delivers overall elegance and length. RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022 Opening to a luminous garnet color, the Paitin 2019 Barbaresco Serraboella Sorì Paitin is delicate and fresh, but the wine is not without its inner power and consistency. It plays its cards carefully, thanks to a slow-moving bouquet characterized by redcurrant and tart cherry. It gains power on the palate with polished tannins and tight structure. Give this bottle a few more years to unwind. Exactly 13,293 numbered bottles were produced. Maintaining a stylistic medium frame, it has a more apparent and notable structure, with ripe tannins and a bit of a grounded feel, with the rich mineral texture of crushed stones. It is a bit reserved at the moment and may very well develop beyond its current rating given time. I would recommend another couple of years in bottle and drinking over the following 15 years. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut. (Antonio Galloni)

The presentation is simple and powerful, and that’s exactly what makes this vintage work. Wines from 2019 tend to show a little more natural richness and concentration. That is also the case here. Sweet floral and spice notes open first, leading to an attractive core of Nebbiolo fruit. Gentle and understated, with lovely precision, the 2019 Albe is a hushed wine that is more about energy than size. I have seen the Albe really blossom with a few years in bottle. The Starderi has shown a very consistent performance over the years. These releases from La Spinetta are all packaged in big, heavy glass bottles. Medium in body, with captivating inner perfume, the 2019 is sensual and inviting right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, spice, lavender and rose petal appear later, adding layers of nuance. The palate takes a more savory and coiled stance at this youthful stage, with iron-rich earth, grenadine, and salted orange. Building tannins are in concert with a persistent spine of acidity that will need time to loosen its grip, but this is a fantastic wine to hold and drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 The Luciano Sandrone 2019 Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore is a beautiful expression of this mighty red grape from the north of Italy. The Valmaggiore vineyard in Roero offers a spicy and accessible interpretation with plenty of wild cherry and blue flower. This vintage also offers pretty layer of crushed white peppercorn. You get terrific complexity and a very food-friendly ensemble at a competitive price.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022 The 2019 Barbaresco Fausoni is a terrific example of the work that has been done here, especially over the last few years, to give the wines greater finesse. Deeply pitched aromatics meld into a huge core of fruit as this expressive, translucent Barbaresco opens. I admire the delineation and focus here. Bright red-toned fruit, white pepper, mint and chalk abound. There’s tremendous purity of fruit here, while the balance is just stunning. VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Barolo Cerequio is a worthy follow up to the stellar 2018. Aromatic and deeply pitched, the 2019 races across the palate with remarkable depth and intensity. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint and cinnamon all open in the glass, but it is the wine’s silkiness and suppleness that impresses most. A kick of acids and tannins puts an exclamation point on the finish. This is a gorgeous Cerequio that takes all the finesse this site offers, and then turns up the volume. What a wine.
