Nebbiolo, along with Sangiovese, is one of the two quintessential grapes of Italy, and with good reason. The Nebbiolo grape is responsible for some of the world's most celebrated wines, including the fabulous wines of Barolo. You'll find Barolos in almost any serious collector's wine cellar, and the Nebbiolo grape rewards the collector with age as its complexities mature.

Nebbiolo is sometimes described as an "iron fist in a velvet glove." It's elegant, like the Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, yet structured like the fine Cabernets of Bordeaux. And yet, not other grape is quite as tied to its terroir as the Nebbiolo grape. Most of the best Nebbiolo wines come from the Italian communes of Barbaresco and Barolo, while attempts to recreate its magic in other countries have not proven nearly as successful.

  1. Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59959

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
The 2019 Barbaresco Bric Balin is distinguished by lots of wild berry fruit and a spicy hint of crushed white pepper that gives lift and immediacy to the bouquet. The tannins are quite firm in this wine and require more time to soften with bottle age. However, Bric Balin delivers overall elegance and length. This is a beautiful wine that is built for the long haul. (Monica Larner)
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2019 Barbaresco Bric Balin is going to be superb, once it softens. All the energy of this cool year comes through in a mid-weight, focused Barbaresco endowed with real drive. Readers need to be patient with the 2019, but it’s a gorgeous wine in the making. (Antonio Galloni)
    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Black cherries, strawberries and fresh flowers with stems on the nose. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a slightly chewy finish. Vanilla is coming through from the wood now, but it should come together with bottle age. Try after 2024. (James Suckling)

  2. Paitin Sorì Paitin Barbaresco Serraboella

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58358

    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
Opening to a luminous garnet color, the Paitin 2019 Barbaresco Serraboella Sorì Paitin is delicate and fresh, but the wine is not without its inner power and consistency. It plays its cards carefully, thanks to a slow-moving bouquet characterized by redcurrant and tart cherry. It gains power on the palate with polished tannins and tight structure. Give this bottle a few more years to unwind. Exactly 13,293 numbered bottles were produced. (Monica Larner)
    JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Taking on a bit more depth and complexity, the 2019 Barbaresco Serraboella Sori Paitin offers up notes of anise, clove, orange zest, and raspberry compote. Maintaining a stylistic medium frame, it has a more apparent and notable structure, with ripe tannins and a bit of a grounded feel, with the rich mineral texture of crushed stones. It is a bit reserved at the moment and may very well develop beyond its current rating given time. I would recommend another couple of years in bottle and drinking over the following 15 years. 3. Sandrone Barolo Aleste

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#56017

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Aleste is a dark, ample wine. Dark cherry, plum, new leather, spice and licorice bring out darker tones of Nebbiolo. All the natural power of these parcels come through effortlessly. Best of all, the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring.
    WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
Aleste is dense and rich in this vintage, its dark cherry and black-raspberry fruit tones balanced by plenty of acidity and cool minerality. It opens with scents of rose petal and lavender, the dark fruit enveloped in a silky texture as the wine takes on notes of licorice and warm spice. A bit intense now, its balance and freshness suggest good aging potential.

  4. Sandrone Le Vigne Barolo

    2016 / 1.5 L. | Item#52764

    RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
I absolutely adore this wine on every emotional and intellectual level. I can still taste it today, weeks after my first sampling. The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Le Vigne is a stirring and profound expression that pulls on your heartstrings. I found it to be unforgettable, quite literally, inspiring one of those celebrated “wow” moments that we wine lovers so desperately seek in bottle after bottle. Le Vigne is a clever blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba (offering the power), Villero in Castiglione Falletto (shaping the precision), Vignane in Barolo (adding to the purity of the aromas) and Merli in Novello (that helps to flesh out the fruit). This intersection of various vineyards spanning the appellation creates a pyramid of perfection and beauty. The wine shows large construction, but that fruit weight is balanced against the vivid cherry, spice, aniseed and campfire ash that gently lift from the bouquet.
    VN98+98+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo Le Vigne is brilliant and explosive in the glass, with tons of brightness, energy and tension. Classically austere, the 2016 is going to take a few years to be at its best, and yet the wine is so arrestingly beautiful today. A mix of freshly cut and dried flowers, mint and pine add an intriguing upper register. In 2016, Le Vigne is finely chiseled and sculpted from start to finish. Bright saline notes add a closing kick of freshness.
    WS9898 pts. - Wine & Spirits - October 1, 2020
Barolo’s 2016 growing season brought long and slow ripening to the vines, resulting in this powerful wine. A blend of fruit from Vignane in Barolo, Merli in Novello, Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba and Villero in Castiglione Falletto, it offers complex flavors of red cherry and plum, orange peel and mint, framed by chiseled tannins and racy acidity. The wine is utterly compelling and delicious upon the first taste, then begins to shut down as the tannins enclose the fruit. A young thoroughbred, this will improve over the next decade and beyond.
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 7, 2020
Pretty cherry, strawberry and floral aromas and flavors are shaded by underbrush, iron and tobacco notes in this chewy red. A wall of tannins puts a strong grip on the finish, but give the fruit the benefit of the doubt. Best from 2024 through 2048. 265 cases imported.

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut. (Antonio Galloni)

  7. Azelia Barolo Margheria

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#51278

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
You can taste the softness and richness of the warm vintage in the 2015 Barolo Margheria. The wine offers dark fruit flavors and lots of rich, plump fruit at the back. This is a softly textured wine that can also be consumed in the near or medium term. This single-vineyard Barolo from Serralunga d’Alba ages in botti grandi for 36 months. The vines are 60 years old, and the soils are rich with limestone clay. Some 6,200 bottles were made.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
The 2015 Barolo Margheria shows the textural breadth of Serralunga in its compelling interplay of succulent, layered fruit and bright, soil-driven tones, with mineral inflections that add layers of complexity. Sage, tobacco, cedar, rose petal, menthol, anise and dried flowers fill out the wine’s frame effortlessly. All the elements are nicely balanced. In 2015 the Margheria is all class.

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Dec 2022
The Bel Colle 2019 Barbaresco is a well-balanced wine with tart fruit, wild cherry, violet, earth and hints of tangy licorice. The presentation is simple and powerful, and that’s exactly what makes this vintage work. Wines from 2019 tend to show a little more natural richness and concentration. That is also the case here. VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2016 Barolo Riserva Monvigliero is powerful and structured. Its pedigree is evident. A wine of vertical depth and intensity, the Riserva impresses with its nuance and overall sense of transparency. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, dried flowers and licorice build into the wonderfully sculpted finish. This is such a gorgeous wine. (Antonio Galloni)

  10. Conterno Barolo Francia

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#56107

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2017 Barolo Francia is dense, rich and explosive right out of the gate. There is virtually no feeling of tannin, as the creaminess of the fruit is so expansive. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, kirsch, sage and menthol gradually appear as the 2017 starts to open in the glass. In 2017, Francia is decidedly exotic, not to mention such a thrill to taste.

  11. Conterno Barolo Francia

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#58976

    VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022
The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2012
Offers depth and power, with menthol and wild herbs shading cherry and plum flavors. The balance tips toward the tannins in the end, yet this doesn’t feel overly astringent, just more structured than many wines of the vintage. Picks up a mineral element as this lingers on the finish. Needs time. Best from 2025 through 2043. 2,167 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
    RP94+94–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
Of the three Barolo samples I tasted from barrel (including Arione and Cerretta, which are also from Serralunga d’Alba), the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia was the furthest behind and the hardest to pin down at this stage in its infancy. I have opened my range of scores accordingly to compensate for the magical unknowns that are likely to occur as the wine moves toward greater harmony and integration before its commercial release. The wine is linear and pointedly focused, lacking the width and volume it will gain when given more time to flesh out and relax. The aromas are also quite primary and simple at this point, with dark cherry and even a hint of ripe strawberry ceding gradually to grilled herb, blue flower and baked brick. This vintage of Barolo Francia will require patience. (Monica Larner)

  12. Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva

    2015 / 1.5 L. | Item#56111

    VN9999 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2015 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is magical. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from Arione, so the 2015 is 80% Francia and 20% Arione. That marks a return to Monfortino as a multi-vineyard wine, which it mostly was until 1978, when the first Monfortino from Francia was made. The combination of sites works so well. I remember tasting the 2015 as separate components and seeing what exactly the Arione piece adds, and that is aromatic explosiveness, texture and breadth. Rose petal, mint, sage, tobacco and cedar lend complexity. More than anything else, though, I am blown away by how utterly delicious the 2015 is. Of course, the 2015 will be better in time, but its pedigree is plainly evident today. Roberto Conterno gave the 2015 just five years in cask, the shortest time in wood for any Monfortino in recent memory, maybe ever. Like most producers around the world, Conterno is thinking deeply about what the optimal period of time in oak is. As for the 2015, it is a flat-out stunner in every way.

  13. E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#54630

    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, May 5, 2021
Plums and ripe strawberries with some crushed-stone undertones. Full-bodied and layered with round, rich tannins and an intensely fruity finish. But then, some fine tannins that are cashmere-like. A little tight at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Chiara Boschis is a historic proponent of organic farming, and she lobbied to make the entire Cannubi cru a certified organic vineyard. Her 2017 Barolo Cannubi shows terrific balance and clean intensity in a vintage that presented quite a few challenges across the appellation due to the heat and drought, along with other issues such as an unexpected frost in April, but that caused the biggest damage to the lowest elevations. The Cannubi is less overtly fruity than the blended Via Nuova or the Mosconi. Instead, it has a more prominent saline imprint with mineral and crushed limestone. However, the quality of the tannins in this release is superior and silkier, and that added structure and focus give the Cannubi the longest drinking window in my opinion of these three new releases. 4,000 bottles were produced.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The Barolo Cannubi is absolutely gorgeous in 2017. Hot and brutally dry conditions notwithstanding, the Cannubi is creamy and sensual in the glass, with impeccable balance, soft, racy edges and tons of allure. It is easily one of the most sensual, compelling Barolos of the year. Ripe dark red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and cedar meld into the beautifully textured, resonant finish. I am so impressed with the wine’s freshness. Perhaps the anti-hail netting helped keep some shade on the fruit. What a wine.

  14. E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Mosconi

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#54829

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, scorched earth, spice and leather add to an impression of gravitas. This is an especially somber, potent Barolo that needs time to soften. Even so, it will always be a brute. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty. The Barolo Mosconi emerges from the estates oldest vines, which are 70–80 years old, and is aged in barrique.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Made with organically grown clones of Michel and Lampia, the E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2017 Barolo Mosconi softly presents bright berry aromas, raspberry, wild cherry, crushed limestone and delicate floral tones of lilacs and violets. Like other wines from this hot vintage, this expression from the Mosconi cru in Monforte d’Alba has that unique floral signature that is precious and unexpected. The wine shows great depth and balance with a pretty intensity that spreads over the palate. The tannins are dry with some dustiness, but the mouthfeel is spot-on in terms of length and polish. Some 9,000 bottles were crafted.

  15. E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Via Nuova

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#54629

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is stellar. In 2017, the Via Nuova is a bit nervous, the sign of a Barolo that is going to need a number of years to unwind. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper add pretty aromatic top notes. As always, the Via Nuova is the most taut Barolo in the range. Via Nuova is a blend of seven vineyard sites; Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste (in Barolo); Ravera and Mosconi (in Monforte); and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga).
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
This classic wine represents a traditional blend of sites including Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte d’Alba (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga d’Alba (Gabutti and Baudana). The organic E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2017 Barolo Via Nuova reveals ripe cherry and raspberry that greet you with a bright, fruit-forward bouquet. I feel the hot-vintage fruit ripeness more in this release than I did in the smaller releases of Mosconi or Cannubi. The wine is slender and elegant in terms of mouthfeel, with a good, polished feel and some subtle bite from the tannins on the close. There are some grassy notes and a spicy point of crushed black pepper as well. 13,000 bottles were produced.
