Shop the Best Wines from Spain

Wines from Spain are one of the great values in today's marketplace. One can find high quality, highly-rated, modern-styled Spanish wine for under $10 or a great value from a producer that has been around for more than a century for under $20.

In Spain wine regions are administered quite a bit like they are in France and are called Denominación de Origen or "D.O." for short. Rioja and Priorat are the only Spanish wine regions that have an elevated status; Denominación de Origen Calificada (D.O.C.) and Denominación d'Origen Qualificada (D.O.Q.) respectively.

Eighty percent of the wines from Spain come from a selection of about 20 grapes, although there are at least 400 grapes grown in Spain. The most important grapes are Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Albariño.

  2. Alemany i Corrio Principia Mathematica

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59756

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Sep 2022
The white 2021 Principia Mathematica was produced with Xarel.lo from a 2.8-hectare vineyard planted 55 years ago and wants to show the variety and zone with no makeup. This is only 12.3% alcohol and comes through as fresh, sharp and floral, with citrus notes; it’s very drinkable and reflects a cool vintage with freshness like no vintage I remember. It’s pure, clean and symmetric, with a pH of 3.2 (after malolactic!). The finest Principia Mathematica ever! 8,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
Brilliant magenta. Smoke-tinged dark berries, cracked pepper and a hint of gaminess on the pungent nose. Chewy and tightly focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors that unfurl and become sweeter on the back half. Lingers with very good persistence on the finish, which features silky tannins and a strong echo of sweet blue fruit. This wine is ridiculously easy to drink and delivers really great value. 5. Comando G La Bruja de Rozas

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#53522

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Nov 2020
The 2019 La Bruja de Rozas was one of the few 2019s already bottled when I tasted the whole range in November 2020. This is a village Garnacha from Las Rozas de Puerto Real, their first approach to the grape, trying to capture the essence of the fresh fruit and the fluidity of the wine. 2019 is a ripe vintage, and the wine is a little more powerful, juicy and balanced, with rich aromas and flavors. It comes from different plots of old vines ranging from 40 to 65 years of age and planted at some 900 meters in altitude on sandy granite soils in a zone that has plenty of rain, averaging 800 liters per year. Like all of their vineyards, these plots are worked organically and biodynamically. Each vineyard fermented separately in oak vats with indigenous yeasts with a soft maceration. The wine matured in oak vats of different sizes, ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 liters. The 2019 effect seems to be quite mild here; the wine follows the profile of the 2018, despite being a little riper, and it’s still very balanced. There are notes of flowers, basil and a touch of bacon intermixed with the wild berries and herbs. There’s a little more concentration, and the tannins are a little chalkier and more austere. But there is no excess ripeness or anything out of place, and it has acidity and length and finishes dry and mineral. 41,853 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020.

  6. Muga Reserva

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56934

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
This was the only red that Muga made in 2018, and the wines from the best vineyards went into the blend. In other words, top vineyards were declassified. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are caressing and refined. Plenty of subtle berries, chocolate and walnuts. Tempranillo with garnacha, mazuelo and graciano. January 2021 release. Drink or hold.
    JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 6/13/2022
The 2018 Muga Reserva is a similar blend and has pretty, slightly fresher notes of darker, almost blue fruits as well as violets, spring flowers, and cedary oak. More medium-bodied on the palate, it shows the fresher, elegant style of the vintage, has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and outstanding length on the finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#59152

    RP93+93–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2022
They had not bottled the 2020 Ultreia Saint Jacques yet and were still waiting for the labels (and they label the day after they bottle), so I caught an unbottled sample that was very tender and fruit-driven, primary and quite open. He used more stems and full clusters in 2020, and since 2018, they have removed the percentage of white grapes that used to be included in the wine. It’s a little more Mediterranean, with aromatic herbs and a more powerful palate. There will be some 120,000 bottles from 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Classic Rioja here with a refined and savory nose showing fine spices, new leather, iron, plums and orange peel. Elegant and very nuanced on the medium-bodied palate that shows fine tannins and juicy berry fruit. Long, reserved and bright in finish. Drink or hold.
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022
Fresh and balanced, this medium-bodied red offers plumped cherry fruit flavors accented by baking spices, iron and Earl Grey tea. Supple tannins lend a plush texture and firm the finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2025. 90,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

  13. Flor de Pingus

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#59671

    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jan 2023
There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there’ll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It’s harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins. 110,000 bottles were filled in July 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023
Plush in texture and elegant overall, with a fresh spine of acidity enlivening black plum reduction and crushed black cherry fruit, violet and tobacco, vanilla and mineral accents as they wrap around a firm core of fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030. 9,000 cases made. (Alison Napjus)

  15. La Rioja Alta Viña Alberdi Reserva

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#58038

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, October 14, 2021
A pretty nose of raspberries, cassis, fresh herbs, vanilla and sweet spices. It’s medium-bodied with round tannins. Creamy and fruity with chocolatey character on the mid-palate. Supple finish with excellent length. Tangy acidity. 100% tempranillo. Drink or hold.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
Their young and fresh red 2018 Viña Alberdi, already a Reserva (Crianza in Spain), matured in oak barrel for two years—in new barrels for the first year and in used barrels for the second year. During the élevage, they racked the wine manually from barrel to barrel four times. 2018 was a year of lower alcohol and more freshness in the wines, and they thought the wines were not designed for the long haul; so, they didn’t produce any other wine, and so the only wine from 2018 IS VIÑA ALBERDI! Which means that all the Tempranillo grapes that were destined for 890, 904 and all the other wines went to this wine. They didn’t use the Garnacha (which was sold in bulk). So, this is a super-Viña Alberdi, which shows more Crianza style in this cooler vintage but with very good depth and complexity, perhaps a more modern and fresher style. The wine has a seamless palate and a juicy texture, with more color than other vintages, more intensity, more fruit… It has grapes from very good vineyards and poor soils that were never destined for this wine. Highly recommendable and very versatile. It has potential to age. They produced a whopping one million bottles of it. It was bottled in March 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
