Wines from Spain are one of the great values in today's marketplace. One can find high quality, highly-rated, modern-styled Spanish wine for under $10 or a great value from a producer that has been around for more than a century for under $20.
In Spain wine regions are administered quite a bit like they are in France and are called Denominación de Origen or "D.O." for short. Rioja and Priorat are the only Spanish wine regions that have an elevated status; Denominación de Origen Calificada (D.O.C.) and Denominación d'Origen Qualificada (D.O.Q.) respectively.
Eighty percent of the wines from Spain come from a selection of about 20 grapes, although there are at least 400 grapes grown in Spain. The most important grapes are Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Albariño.

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020 A red with blackberry and plum aromas and flavors and orange-peel undertones. It’s full-bodied with ripe tannins and a flavorful finish. Give it a year or two to soften and come together. Drink after 2021.RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2021 The organic entry-level 2018 Flor de Vetus is Tinta de Toro from vines around the winery next to VIllabuena del Puente planted in 1999 and certified organic in 2018. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in oak barrels for 11 months. It has contained ripeness and moderate alcohol and acidity, reflecting a cooler year with a long and slow ripening of the grapes. It’s sleek, polished and very balanced, with unusual elegance for the region. 124,027 bottles and 100 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2020.
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, October 14, 2021 A fresh, fruity red with plum and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Medium body. Clean and delicious finish. Tempranillo. Drink now.WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022 Dark garnet to the eye, this wine has aromas of black currant, licorice and Marcona almond. Its smooth tannins feel good on the palate. Opening flavors of bittersweet chocolate and mint hit the tastebuds first, followed by flavors of blackberry and raspberry that are joined by touches of vanilla and baking spice on the finish.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022 This was the only red that Muga made in 2018, and the wines from the best vineyards went into the blend. In other words, top vineyards were declassified. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are caressing and refined. Plenty of subtle berries, chocolate and walnuts. Tempranillo with garnacha, mazuelo and graciano. January 2021 release. Drink or hold.JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 6/13/2022 The 2018 Muga Reserva is a similar blend and has pretty, slightly fresher notes of darker, almost blue fruits as well as violets, spring flowers, and cedary oak. More medium-bodied on the palate, it shows the fresher, elegant style of the vintage, has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and outstanding length on the finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 7, 2022 Classic Rioja here with a refined and savory nose showing fine spices, new leather, iron, plums and orange peel. Elegant and very nuanced on the medium-bodied palate that shows fine tannins and juicy berry fruit. Long, reserved and bright in finish. Drink or hold.SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022 Fresh and balanced, this medium-bodied red offers plumped cherry fruit flavors accented by baking spices, iron and Earl Grey tea. Supple tannins lend a plush texture and firm the finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2025. 90,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, October 14, 2021 A pretty nose of raspberries, cassis, fresh herbs, vanilla and sweet spices. It’s medium-bodied with round tannins. Creamy and fruity with chocolatey character on the mid-palate. Supple finish with excellent length. Tangy acidity. 100% tempranillo. Drink or hold.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 Their young and fresh red 2018 Viña Alberdi, already a Reserva (Crianza in Spain), matured in oak barrel for two years—in new barrels for the first year and in used barrels for the second year. During the élevage, they racked the wine manually from barrel to barrel four times. 2018 was a year of lower alcohol and more freshness in the wines, and they thought the wines were not designed for the long haul; so, they didn’t produce any other wine, and so the only wine from 2018 IS VIÑA ALBERDI! Which means that all the Tempranillo grapes that were destined for 890, 904 and all the other wines went to this wine. They didn’t use the Garnacha (which was sold in bulk). So, this is a super-Viña Alberdi, which shows more Crianza style in this cooler vintage but with very good depth and complexity, perhaps a more modern and fresher style. The wine has a seamless palate and a juicy texture, with more color than other vintages, more intensity, more fruit… It has grapes from very good vineyards and poor soils that were never destined for this wine. Highly recommendable and very versatile. It has potential to age. They produced a whopping one million bottles of it. It was bottled in March 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - March 22, 2021 Blueberries, violets, crushed rocks, peppery spice, and floral notes all emerge from the 2018 Montsant Mas Donis Old Vines, which tastes like a baby Priorat. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it offers an elegant, seamless texture, light tannins, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, September 9, 2022 Fresh plums with vanilla, walnut and a hint of tobacco on the nose. A medium-bodied red with a juicy, fluid mid-palate, coated by supple, soft tannins and a creamy finish. Good length here. Drink now. (James Suckling)WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023 Aromas of blackberry, dried mountainside herbs and black olives set the stage for flavors of black currant, Luxardo cherry, anisette, thyme and black truffle. Sleek tannins ply their way across the palate and drift off into a cool, spicy finish. (Mike Desimone)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020 I find balance, seriousness and some restraint in the 2018 Crianza. It has moderate alcohol and contained ripeness, integrated oak and a polished palate with fruit and spice flavors that make it quite recognizable as Rioja. It has some tannins that would welcome food and/or a little bit more time in bottle. It’s 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano matured in American oak barrels for one year. 240,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Sep 2020 The 2018 Vino de Finca is a blend of Monastrell with 25% Garnacha from a cooler, more continental vintage. The Monastrell is from 20- to 30-year-old vines, and the 8-year-old Garnacha is from limestone-rich soils. It fermented in the underground stone pools with 25% to 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in 5,000-liter foudres and 500-liter barrels for 12 months. As all the Garnacha plots are now in production, there has been a higher percentage of it in the blend since 2017. The selection of plots used for this wine results in something more serious, more austere and with more depth than the entry-level Casa Castillo. He doesn’t use Syrah in this blend because he thinks without Syrah it has a more Mediterranean profile, with aromatic herbs, thyme, rosemary and lavender and the slightly more rustic notes of the Monastrell. 53,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/22/2021 Based largely on Carignan, with 30% Garnacha and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Priorat has a big, smoky nose of mulled red and black fruits, graphite, flowers, and new leather. This carries to a medium to full-bodied wine with terrific tannins (especially for Carignan), a balanced, elegant texture, no hard edges, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 21, 2020 Rich and velvety, this red is big but gentle, with raspberry jam, cherry pie and vanilla flavors that caress the palate. Well-integrated tannins give subtle structure, while citrusy acidity keeps this fresh. Harmonious, in a ripe, fruit-centered style. Drink now through 2026. 5,000 cases made, 1,100 cases imported.RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020 The pale and bright ruby colored 2018 Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria is really impressively aromatic, floral, open and expressive. It had a soft vinification in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barrels for four months, including malolactic. The palate is medium-bodied, the tannins are fine and the flavors clean and focused. The wine is tasty and impressive, elegant and really pleasant. At this price, it’s a real bargain. I just wish the élevage was a little more respectful with the varietal aromas, because it’s still a little oaky. Today, this is the finest wine in the portfolio, and one of the best I remember from Bodegas Aragonesas. 150,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 Inky ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented dark fruits, pungent flowers and subtle oak spiciness on the perfumed nose. Smooth and fleshy on the palate, showing good heft as well as energy to the bitter cherry and blackberry flavors. Finishes long and spicy, with even tannins and bright closing lift.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Nov 2020 Always a wine of incredible lightness and energy, the 2018 Las Iruelas excels in a year like 2018. It is delicate and floral and comes from a relatively large 1.1-hectare vineyard in the valley that names the wine, in the village of El Tiemblo in the province of Ávila in the Gredos wine region. It’s a very steep slope that faces east and gets the morning sun, but it is protected by the mountain from the afternoon sun. The soil is quite unique, as it contains a mixture of granite and schist, laminated and with vertical veins that allow the roots to go very deep. The soils are very shallow, barely 20 centimeters and are rich in sand, quartz and silt. The climate is also quite unique — it gets abundant rains since it’s located in a place where storms get trapped between the Tiétar and Alberche Valleys. The bunches are painstakingly cleaned, and every grape that is less than perfect is removed before they are put into oak vats to ferment with the natural yeasts, with a soft vinification and an infusion of very long macerations. The wine matured in a 1,400-liter oak vat for 12 months. This is ethereal, transparent, aromatic and nuanced, with incredible energy but with a silky mouthfeel that makes it feel light but has amazing inner power! It has to be the most elegant vintage of Iruelas. 1,785 bottles were filled in March 2020.
