In Spain wine regions are administered quite a bit like they are in France and are called Denominación de Origen or "D.O." for short. Rioja and Priorat are the only Spanish wine regions that have an elevated status; Denominación de Origen Calificada (D.O.C.) and Denominación d'Origen Qualificada (D.O.Q.) respectively.
Eighty percent of the wines from Spain come from a selection of about 20 grapes, although there are at least 400 grapes grown in Spain. The most important grapes are Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Albariño.

Cherry, cassis, vanilla and incense on the expansive nose, where a zesty mineral note adds vibrancy. Rich and ample in style but shows superb energy as well. Finishes sweet, seamless and extremely long, with lingering florality and polished, fully integrated tannins.RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020 The prototype of red from Rioja Alta could very well be the 2016 Imperial Reserva, fine, precise and powerful. The grapes for this cuvée were picked between October 10th and 25th, and it’s a canonical blend of 85% Tempranillo and the rest Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha with 14% alcohol and balancing freshness. It fermented with their own Imperial yeasts in oak vats of different sizes and matured in French and American oak barrels for 24 months. This wine has a very defined style that should not change; it has more oak than the Asúa Reserva and is made with grapes not only from Haro but also from Torremontalvo, Villalba and Briones. 2016 was a cooler year, and the wines are fresher and balanced. This has the mushroomy touch from the old cave and plenty of tannins that are going to require powerful food and/or time in bottle. A classic among classics. 150,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.

RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2023 The youth, freshness, balance and harmony of the 2016 Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva is gobsmacking. The wine is a little shy, insinuating, reticent and a little closed, and it feels younger than it is. It comes from a collection of small plots of some of the oldest vines in the village of La Aguilera in the lieu-dit, or “paraje,” that names the wine, in a small valley surrounded by pine, holm and juniper trees, where there is a cold draft of air and the temperature is lower than in the rest of the village. The soils are sandy and intermixed with clay on a marl mother rock. The plants are mostly Tempranillo, but as they are very old vines, there’s always a field blend of other varieties—Albillo Mayor, Monastrell, Garnacha, Bobal and Cariñena—all fermented together with full clusters that were foot trodden in concrete vats and indigenous yeasts. Malolactic was in barrel and lasted for 11 months, while the élevage was extended to a total of 55 months (almost five years!). After all this time in barrels, the wine is not oaky at all; it’s floral and perfumed, elegant, nuanced and layered. The texture is silky, and it’s medium-bodied, with moderate ripeness, 14% alcohol and very good freshness denoted by a pH of 3.41. It has fine tannins that make it nicely textured and fine-boned, with subtle minerality. This should be veeeeeery long lived, as it has the stuffing, all the ingredients and the balance between them to make old bones. Amazing juice. 3,591 bottles and 51 magnums were filled in April 2021. Shows maturity here, with a medium body and superb freshness. Incredibly long finish with lots of truffle and walnut. Lasts over a minute. Very complete now, but you can still hold it. (James Suckling)RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 The 2016 Viña Ardanza Reserva was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha that matured in used American oak barrels for three years, where it was hand-racked from barrel to barrel six times in the case of Tempranillo and five times for the Garnacha, as it had a slightly shorter élevage of 30 months. Against all odds, I found the 2016 to be fresher than the 2015 and less developed, despite the fact that winemaker Julio Sáenz told me he considers it a warmer year. But I have found many wines I like in 2016, and the wine feels very clean and quite harmonious, younger and less developed, with more primary notes and a velvety mouthfeel. 600,000 bottles produced. The wine was bottled in June 2020. Silky on the palate and finely knit, this is a rich, medium-bodied red that offers supple tannins. A lovely example of Rioja in a more traditional style, this should open well in the decanter or with time in the cellar. Tempranillo and Garnacha. RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Dec 2018 Named after the Garnacha in the village of Fitero where the grapes are sourced, the 2016 Corral de los Altos fermented in 5,000-liter stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter barrels for nine months. This is fresher than the 2015, but not as fresh as Malayeto, as this vineyard tends to have higher ripeness but really balanced and with tasty flavors. Quite impressive, it has finesse and juicy fruit. This is a large vineyard and they have purchased new plots in 2018, so they could produce more, or even select from the best parts of the vineyard for this single-vineyard bottling. 7,900 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2018.
