Simply put, other than in rare instances, red Burgundy wines are usually made from the Pinot Noir grape and white Burgundy wines are made from Chardonnay. The wines are always 100% varietal as blending is not permitted. Other grapes like Gamay (red) and Aligote (white) are permitted in certain appellations and are labeled as such.

Common Burgundy wines are labeled "Bourgogne wine" or "Vin de Bourgogne" and almost always have the name of the grape, such as Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, prominently on the label.

The limestone escarpment that gives the entire Burgundy wine region its unique terroir is called the Côte d'Or. The most important wines of Burgundy in the Côte d'Or come from the sub-regions named Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. As the wines of Burgundy have received increased in demand by consumers worldwide, wines from the Côte Chalonnaise, a small area to the south that was thought to be inferior in the past, are beginning to receive attention and have largely improved.

Wines from Chablis, Beaujolais, and the Maconnais are also considered Burgundy wines.

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières was showing well, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, citrus oil, nutmeg and warm pastry, followed by a medium to full-bodied, racy and nicely defined palate that’s long and intense.

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56427

    RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières exhibits scents of pear, toasted almonds and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, bright and chalky, it’s deep and concentrated, with a mouthwatering, delicately oak-inflected finish.
    VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru, a majority of the vines under 20 years old, was picked on 10 September. It is well-defined on the nose with light orange rind and very subtle muscat-like aromas, tight and benefitting from modest aeration. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening. There is a fine bead of acidity here given the warmth of the growing season, hints of praline and almond shaving towards the composed finish.

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#58709

    RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
Notes of pear, waxy yellow orchard fruit, nutmeg and freshly baked bread introduce the 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières, a delicate, medium-bodied white that’s bright, fine-boned and saline in this warm vintage. (William Kelley)
    VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a nicely detailed bouquet with fine delineation, orange pith and light linen scents developing with time. The palate is well balanced with tangy orange zest on the entry, quite linear and strict with a fresh finish, though it does not quite possess the mineralité of the Combettes. (Neal Martin)

  5. Domaine Faiveley Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58940

    RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
Aromas of cherries, wild berries, incense and loamy soil, framed by a deft touch of spicy new oak, introduce the 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered wine that’s elegantly muscular, with terrific depth and concentration. Long and penetrating, this is a fine longer-haul proposition from Faiveley. (William Kelley)
    VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru comes from Faiveley’s 1.27-hectare parcel. It has a floral nose with potpourri and light lavender aromas that partially occlude the fruit expression. The palate is lithe on the entry with modest depth and quite tertiary in style, and a keen thread of acidity lends freshness on the finish. A little austere in style, it opens with aeration to offer a very minerally finish. Here, it put the Echézeaux 2019 in its place. (Neal Martin)

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58943

    SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022
This red is silky, complex and very expressive today. Delivers black cherry, blackberry, sandalwood, spicy oak and mineral flavors, while the well-integrated structure lends support. This has a discreet oak element, which lingers with vanilla and toast notes. Very harmonious and long. Best from 2026 through 2047. 260 cases made, 15 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
    RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
The 2019 Echézeaux En Orveaux Grand Cru has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of plums and berries, complemented by suggestions of orange peel, sweet soil tones, peonies and spices. Medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, it’s enveloping but vibrant, with lively acids and a precise finish. (William Kelley)

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#54165

    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2020
This wine immediately conveys a sense of concentration with its nose of insistent, dark cherry paired with subtle tar and toast notes. The palate confirms this and presents concentrated fruit on a sinuous, elegant body with silkily woven tannins. For now the oak still casts a tarry spell but this will subside with a little more bottle age. Lovely freshness prevails.

    VN89+89–91 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2021 Auxey-Duresses Les Ecussaux 1er Cru Blanc has a very attractive nose with yellow plum, jasmine and freshly baked popcorn nose, well defined and quite vigorous. The palate is well balanced with a very smooth texture, intense and quite long with a slightly honeyed finish, creamy and seductive. (Neal Martin)

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#60367

    VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2021 Beaune Les Cents Vignes 1er Cru comes from a hectare parcel (1.16ha), around 60-year-old vines. This has quite a complex bouquet, fine mineralité and tension with dark cherry fruit mixed cranberry and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with well integrated oak, very elegant in style. This gently fans out with a sustained, sour cherry and crushed strawberry finish. A tender and quite delicious Beaune. (Neal Martin)
