Simply put, other than in rare instances, red Burgundy wines are usually made from the Pinot Noir grape and white Burgundy wines are made from Chardonnay. The wines are always 100% varietal as blending is not permitted. Other grapes like Gamay (red) and Aligote (white) are permitted in certain appellations and are labeled as such.
Common Burgundy wines are labeled "Bourgogne wine" or "Vin de Bourgogne" and almost always have the name of the grape, such as Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, prominently on the label.
The limestone escarpment that gives the entire Burgundy wine region its unique terroir is called the Côte d'Or. The most important wines of Burgundy in the Côte d'Or come from the sub-regions named Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. As the wines of Burgundy have received increased in demand by consumers worldwide, wines from the Côte Chalonnaise, a small area to the south that was thought to be inferior in the past, are beginning to receive attention and have largely improved.
Wines from Chablis, Beaujolais, and the Maconnais are also considered Burgundy wines.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Au Dessus des Carrières comes from two parcels planted mainly in the seventies. Vibrant again on the nose, this offers enticing scents of yellow plum, flint and subtle petrichor scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine depth, perhaps a little more linear than the Vieilles Vignes with a very focused finish. Excellent. Chablis like a Swiss watch! (Neal Martin)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021 The 2020 Saint-Bris Exogyra Virgula, which was taken from tank, has a light apple blossom bouquet with a lovely lemon thyme scent. The palate is fresh, vibrant and very saline, delivering good density and flavors of green apple mixed with pear toward the finish. Superb. (Neal Martin)
VN87+87–89 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 The 2021 Bourgogne Aligoté is raised entirely in stainless-steel. It has a perfumed bouquet with pressed white flowers commingling with linden and orange pith aromas. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a linear finish that maybe just needs a bit more density and texture. Still, this has plenty of vitality and tension. VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Sainte Claire was showing a little too much SO2 on the nose, although there seems to be decent fruit tucked behind. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite tensile and steely with a precise finish that deserves a round of applause. This is well-crafted. VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Marie-Antoinette comes mostly from Vergisson parcels on southerly-exposed vines, matured in stainless-steel on the fine lees for 12 months. It has a taut, minimal, steely bouquet that offers discrete saline/smoky scents. The palate is well balanced with grapefruit and touches of orange rind. Quite sapid with tropical hints towards the finish, though it is never an opulent Pouilly-Fuissé. It just expresses the warmth of the vintage. (Neal Martin)
VN89+89–91 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Village was picked as low as 20hl/ha in some parcels that were severely affected by frost. Nevertheless, it has a fresh and vibrant bouquet with fine mineralité and vivacity. “Classic Chablis” as Didier Picq tells me with what I am sure is a grin. The palate is fresh and taut, a fine saline undercurrent with a sharp and quite harmonious finish. You don’t find Chablis-Village much better than this in 2021. (Neal Martin)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru from vines located on the Saint-Aubin side on shallow soils, has wonderful mineralité on the nose, crushed rock filtering through the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lively and spicy on the finish with veins of stem ginger. I love this… you will too. (Neal Martin)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Vieilles Vignes was acutely affected by the frost with Vaudécorse cropped at a paltry 9hl/ha. It has a flinty, tightly-wound bouquet that is focused and vibrant, yet somehow more “serious” than the Chablis-Villages. The palate is very well balanced with more depth and substance than the Chablis-Village, harmonious, lightly spiced with gorgeous lime and white peach notes towards the elegant finish. Wonderful. VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru is the only cuvée with a normal yield (50hl/ha) as Didier warmed the vineyard with wax candles during the frost. It has a perfumed nose with hints of pressed white flowers and a light oyster shell tincture that emerges with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, perhaps the most saline of Picq’s cuvées with a long tail on the satisfying finish. Proper Chablis! (Neal Martin)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019 The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Fonteny 1er Cru, which contains 40% whole bunch fruit, has a very detailed bouquet of crushed-stone-infused, minerally fruit; hints of incense and lavender emerge with time in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant right from the start, offering candied tart red fruit mixed with orange zest and citrus peel, wonderful definition and such vivacity on the finish that you will beg for another sip straight away. Might this surpass the Clos Saint-Jacques this year?
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichots 1er Cru has ample red cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose, touches of sous-bois and tobacco emerging with aeration. The palate is soft and fleshy, a fine bead of acidity, gaining depth towards the finish with a touch of black pepper lingering on the aftertaste. You could broach this now or drink over the next five years.
VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru is matured in 25% new oak. It has a very perfumed bouquet with pressed rose petals infusing the red berry fruit, hints of cranberry and bergamot emerging with time, fine mineralité too. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries, crushed strawberry and light orange zest notes, the acidity lending real bite and energy towards the finish. Bon vin! (Neal Martin)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2020 Fixin Village is complex on the nose considering this is a Village Cru: redcurrant, briary, sous-bois and light truffle scents. This is very fragrant. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a dab of sour cherry on the finish. Delightful. (Neal Martin)
VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022 The 2020 Givry Blanc Cuvée Amélie has a pretty nose, touches of grilled walnut, quite Meursault-like in style. The palate is well-balanced, rather powerful with good acidity. Maybe, just missing a little tension on the finish, yet I appreciate the length here. Worth seeking out. (Neal Martin)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 The 2019 Beaune Les Perrières 1er Cru comes from a mixture of vine ages, the oldest around 90 years old. It has an expressive, floral bouquet featuring touches of kirsch and orange blossom; this is one of the most opulent crus. The palate is well balanced with lively red berry fruit, the calcareous soils lending tension and linearity toward the almost Pommard-like finish.
