Simply put, other than in rare instances, red Burgundy wines are usually made from the Pinot Noir grape and white Burgundy wines are made from Chardonnay. The wines are always 100% varietal as blending is not permitted. Other grapes like Gamay (red) and Aligote (white) are permitted in certain appellations and are labeled as such.

Common Burgundy wines are labeled "Bourgogne wine" or "Vin de Bourgogne" and almost always have the name of the grape, such as Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, prominently on the label.

The limestone escarpment that gives the entire Burgundy wine region its unique terroir is called the Côte d'Or. The most important wines of Burgundy in the Côte d'Or come from the sub-regions named Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. As the wines of Burgundy have received increased in demand by consumers worldwide, wines from the Côte Chalonnaise, a small area to the south that was thought to be inferior in the past, are beginning to receive attention and have largely improved.

Wines from Chablis, Beaujolais, and the Maconnais are also considered Burgundy wines.

    RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Sep 2022
The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé En Chatenay has turned out nicely, unfurling to reveal aromas of crisp stone fruit, white flowers, freshly baked bread, mandarin oil and confit citrus. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with bright acids and a saline finish, it sees the longest élevage of any wine in the range, with used barrels from Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault. One of the finest values in the range is the 2019 Ladoix Le Clou d’Orge (Domaine Gagey), a bright and chiseled wine that evokes pear, waxy citrus peel, struck match and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, layered and incisive, it concludes with a saline, mouthwatering finish.

  7. Louis Jadot Morey-Saint-Denis Clos des Ormes

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#50655

    VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019
The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos des Ormes 1er Cru has a pure, quite generous, almost Chambolle-like bouquet of ample red cherries, raspberry coulis and subtle vanilla aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and a fine bead of acidity. Quite “correct” and linear, yet with admirable precision toward the finish. This is a finely crafted Morey Premier Cru from Jadot.
    RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2019
The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Ormes (Maison Louis Jadot) was showing very well, bursting with aromas of sweet berry fruit, candied peel, baking chocolate and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and lavish, with juicy acids, fine but chalky structuring tannins and a long finish.

    RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Domaine Louis Jadot) reveals aromas of rich berries, orange rind, peonies and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, with a lively core of fruit, ripe but firm tannins and a nicely defined finish, it will demand some bottle age. (William Kelley)
    VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
The 2020 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru comprises of one 456-litre barrel this year. It has a very well-defined bouquet with seamlessly integrated oak and impressive mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine delineation, just a little chewiness on the entry but there is tension interwoven into this Volnay from start to finish, plus great persistency. Superb. (Neal Martin)
