The Best Wines from Argentina

In the early 1990s, a conscientious effort was made by Argentinian viticulturists to improve quality and increase exports. Today, Argentinan wine has established itself as a serious player in the international wine market, with a reputation for selling high quality wines at consumer-friendly prices. As of 2010, Argentina is the fifth-largest wine-producing country by volume in the world.

More than two-thirds of Argentinian wine comes from the Mendoza region, situated in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. In Mendoza some of the world’s finest Malbec, Argentina's signature grape over the past 15–20 years, is grown and flourishes. Other prominent growing regions include San Juan and La Rioja, which are located further north.

A particular focus of white Argentinan wine is the aromatic grape, Torrontés. Almost all of its production worldwide is in Argentina.

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56881

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 2, 2020
A tight, focused red with dark-plum and hazelnut character. Citrus, too. Medium to full body. Bright finish. Shows refined tension and beauty. Drink or hold.
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
I find a very nicely crafted and harmonious wine in the 2018 Malbec Remolinos Vineyard, a red with a fruit-driven nose full of violets, berries, good freshness and elegance. The palate is very balanced and fresh with no edges. It is simply delicious. They produced 300,000 bottles of this.

Dark olives and some fresh leafiness to the black plums and dark cherries. A very smooth red with creamy tannins and juicy fruit, which give it a lot of immediate appeal. Delicious now.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2022
The 2021 Malbec Don David from the Calchaquí Valley was aged for 12 months in oak. Purple in hue. Notes of spice, black pepper and ripe plum are present on the nose, along with oak and smoky aromas. Juicy in the mouth with grippy tannins and a medium body, it ends with a fruity finish. 5. Susana Balbo Signature Brioso

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#59969

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2022
The 2020 Signature Brioso is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo and spent 14 months in French barrels. A dark garnet in the glass. The intricate nose offers herbs, ripe fruit and hints of plum, pepper and red currant with a whiff of mint. Creamy and expressive in the mouth with an expansive flow, good grip and juice, this is a classical, intense red with a prolix finish. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 30, 2022
Racy and layered with black and red fruit, black chocolate, black olives, blueberries and a mineral accent. A tangy, elegant and juicy palate, rounded by dusty tannins that melt into the fruit. Long and refined. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 23% malbec, 19% cabernet franc and 6% petit verdot. Drink or hold.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The nose of the 2020 Brioso transports me directly to Agrelo and to a warmer year when tasting it next to other wines from cooler vintages in the Valle de Uco. It’s therefore more classical, with the floral Luján de Cuyo aromas of violets and herbs from the varieties—52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. It achieved 14.5% alcohol and matured in new barriques for 15 months, which lent it abundant tannins and some oak aromas and flavors that are going to require some more time in bottle to be melted. 44,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2023
All grapes for this blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot were sourced from Susana Balbo’s estate in Agrelo. It’s lively with elegant acidity and plush tannins. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, licorice and rosemary rise from the glass. This wine has a core of redfruit flavors wrapped in light notes of green bell pepper and coffee. (Jesica Vargas)

  7. Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Terroir Valle de Uco

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#53961

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The 2018 Malbec Terroir Valle de Uco has great brightness of fruit and much more freshness than the one from Luján that I tasted next to it. It’s expressive, aromatic and more elegant, with refined tannins and a silkier mouthfeel. There is a special brightness here.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2018 MalbecTerroir comes from La Consulta and Tupungato, Uco Valley and was 25% aged in foudres. Purple in color. The reductive nose delivers herbs and violets with tightly packed but clear blackberry and plum aromas. In the mouth, things are a little different. Juicy and flavorful, the expansive flow brings grip and chalky tannins with a degree of linearity that stretches out the finish. A Malbec for modern palates.
    JS9090 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 8, 2021

Smoky blueberries and redcurrants, fresh vanilla and a lifted cigar note. A generous red with some sweetness to the fruit, but well balanced by firm, fine-grained tannins. Juicy, laid-back and nicely flattering. Drink now.

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#60149

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2020 Malbec is a blend of grapes from Drummond and Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo. The vines date back to 1926. Aged for 12 months in one-third new barrels. Purple in the glass. The nose offers intense aromas of violet, fresh plum, gentle woody notes and hints of spice. Plush, broad and agile with refined, polished tannins. The texture is a combination of silk and velvet. Well-made, given the year. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 3, 2022
A perfumed red with notes of fresh wild berries, just-picked violets, sweet spices and cocoa-dusted walnuts. Medium-to full-bodied with layers of plush, polished tannins and a lingering, silky mouth-feel. Velvety and seamless with delicious blue-fruit and blue-flower character. Drink or hold.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The estate 2020 Malbec was produced with grapes from their property in Mayor Drummond (Finca Mendel) that was planted in 1928. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, one-third each new, second and third use, for 12 months. It has 14.5% alcohol and a soft and round palate with integrated acidity. De la Mota thinks this 2020 is very representative of the zone of Luján even if they harvest it a little earlier, and it has a little more fresh fruit, using the oak to keep that character, a balance between ripe and fresh fruit that is very interesting. It is juicy and primary with very fine tannins. A wine that overdelivers for the price. 88,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2023
The grapes for this red are sourced from a vineyard planted in 1928 in Luján de Cuyo. It exhibits a dense and fruit-forward bouquet. The palate offers ripe plum, blueberry and rosemary, all intertwined. Moderate acidity and supple tannins provide support. It finishes with subtle coffee notes. (Jesica Vargas)

  13. Trivento White Malbec Reserve

    2022 / 750 ml. | Item#60163

    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The white blanc de noirs 2022 Reserve White Malbec was produced with red grapes, a new category and dimension of Malbec vinified as white. Made with grapes from Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco, this fermented in stainless steel and was bottled unoaked. The wine has only 10.5% alcohol, with notable acidity and freshness and a touch of residual sugar (three grams). I don’t think I’ve seen a paler white; it’s really transparent, light, fresh, vibrant and easy to drink. It has notes of green apples and fresh yellow berries with a nose that makes me think of sake! A surprising new product. 1.3 million bottles produced. They bottle through the year from a master blend. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    JS8989 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 4, 2023
This white malbec does have a white color. Neutral, estery nose with nectarines, green plums and fermented rice. Almost a bit Sake-like. High malic acidity here with a subtle and concise finish. A little tart at the end. Screw cap. (Zekun Shuai)

  14. Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Appellation Gualtallary

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59284

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2019 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary comes from specific soils, two small three-hectare plots in the Cerros del Jaboncillo, where they find more caliche and limestone in Tupungato Winelands. They believe this place transmits the maximum expression of limestone to Malbec, giving a structured wine with fine-grained tannins with the wilderness from Gualtallary. It fermented in small concrete vats with indigenous yeasts at some 26 degrees Celsius for 20 days. Eighty-five percent of the volume matured in untoasted 3,500-liter French oak foudres for 20 months while the rest was kept in concrete. They sell it a little later than the Altamira because they feel Gualtallary needs a little more time in bottle; therefore, they are now offering the 2019 vintage, a very balanced wine that talks about the place where it was born. This is vibrant and expressive, with a complex nose and especially a lively palate with effervescent acidity and very fine-boned with elegant but firm tannins (they say “Serralunga-like” tannins). I find the recurring iron-like note of blood and fresh meat here too, intermixed with the wild flowers, herbs and spices. This has depth and complexity, and if Altamira is Barbaresco, Gualtallary is Barolo… 10,000 bottles were filled in January 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 30, 2022
Dense and powerful, but in a very fresh and scented way, with violet, hibiscus, oyster-shell and hot-stone notes to the black and blue fruit. Almost a bit gamey with some wet earth. Full-bodied and quite dense on the palate. There is volume, with succulents and real structure, and, of course, some fine austerity. Quite puristic and intellectual, far from flattering. Give it some time to fully unwind itself. Best from 2025.

The BenMarco range offers very good quality for the price, and the 2019 BenMarco Cabernet Sauvignon, produced with grapes from Los Árboles in Tunuyán, is a textbook varietal example with balsamic and herbal notes, great definition and balance, ripeness and finesse. It matured in second use French barriques for 11 months. 48,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)
