The Best Wines from Argentina

In the early 1990s, a conscientious effort was made by Argentinian viticulturists to improve quality and increase exports. Today, Argentinan wine has established itself as a serious player in the international wine market, with a reputation for selling high quality wines at consumer-friendly prices. As of 2010, Argentina is the fifth-largest wine-producing country by volume in the world.

More than two-thirds of Argentinian wine comes from the Mendoza region, situated in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. In Mendoza some of the world’s finest Malbec, Argentina's signature grape over the past 15–20 years, is grown and flourishes. Other prominent growing regions include San Juan and La Rioja, which are located further north.

A particular focus of white Argentinan wine is the aromatic grape, Torrontés. Almost all of its production worldwide is in Argentina.

  1. Mendel Malbec

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56626

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
I tasted two vintages of the estate Malbec, of which the 2019 Malbec feels fresher and more elegant, with expressive aromas of berries and aromatic herbs, a spicy twist but nicely integrated and in the background. This has a medium-bodied palate with soft tannins and great balance.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2019 Malbec Mendel comes from a vineyard first planted in 1928 in Mayor Drummond, Luján de Cuyo and was aged for 12 months in barrels, 1/3 of them new. A vivid purple in the glass, the perfumed nose offers aromas of prune and ripe fruit with sweet spices, white pepper, cedar and other notes from the aging process. In the mouth, it’s terse with an expansive, tacky palate, good freshness and ripe, fruity flavors. A classical, well-rounded Mendoza red.

Attractive black-cherry, plum, light green-tobacco and stem aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, layered and delicious. Drink or hold.

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#57601

    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2019 Malbec Norton Reserva from Luján de Cuyo spent 12 months aging in French barrels. An intense purple in hue. The nose offers notes ranging from ripe plum to prunes along with white pepper and aromas from the aging process such as pencil box. Broad with sweet tannins, the flow is languorous but maintains an almost juicy freshness. A generally classical wine, the acidity is a modern touch.

    JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 3, 2022
Black cherries and scented violets with some currants and baking spice, too. The tight and juicy palate provides an elegant expression of the fruit. Drink now.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2020 Golden Reserve Malbec matured in well-seasoned and neutral barriques, and 20% of the volume was in French oak foudres for 12 months. It’s ripe and juicy, with 14% alcohol and a dry finish, and the higher percentage of foudre has helped to keep the balance and freshness and the oak integrated into the wine. One million bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)
