The Best Wines from Argentina

In the early 1990s, a conscientious effort was made by Argentinian viticulturists to improve quality and increase exports. Today, Argentinan wine has established itself as a serious player in the international wine market, with a reputation for selling high quality wines at consumer-friendly prices. As of 2010, Argentina is the fifth-largest wine-producing country by volume in the world.

More than two-thirds of Argentinian wine comes from the Mendoza region, situated in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. In Mendoza some of the world’s finest Malbec, Argentina's signature grape over the past 15–20 years, is grown and flourishes. Other prominent growing regions include San Juan and La Rioja, which are located further north.

A particular focus of white Argentinan wine is the aromatic grape, Torrontés. Almost all of its production worldwide is in Argentina.

A textbook Torrontés, showing geranium, peach and Meyer lemon aromas up front, this picks up rich candied orange peel and juicy peach notes, which have just enough acidity to keep the floridness in check. Drink now. 12,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)
