The Best Wines from Argentina

In the early 1990s, a conscientious effort was made by Argentinian viticulturists to improve quality and increase exports. Today, Argentinan wine has established itself as a serious player in the international wine market, with a reputation for selling high quality wines at consumer-friendly prices. As of 2010, Argentina is the fifth-largest wine-producing country by volume in the world.

More than two-thirds of Argentinian wine comes from the Mendoza region, situated in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. In Mendoza some of the world’s finest Malbec, Argentina's signature grape over the past 15–20 years, is grown and flourishes. Other prominent growing regions include San Juan and La Rioja, which are located further north.

A particular focus of white Argentinan wine is the aromatic grape, Torrontés. Almost all of its production worldwide is in Argentina.

  3. Luca Old Vine Malbec

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59669

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
Amazing depth and intensity to this old-vine malbec with blackberry and black-licorice character to the wine. Violets, too. It’s full and dense, yet remains energetic and long. Polished, refined tannins. A gorgeous, plush red. Drinkable now for its generosity, but let it mellow with a few years of bottle age. Better after 2024.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2019 Malbec Old Vine is a blend of grapes from La Consulta, Paraje Altamira, Pampa El Cepillo and Gualtallary, all in the Uco Valley. The 2019 was aged for 14 months in 35% new French barrels. Vivid purple in the glass. The nose is a combination of the best of the different regions. Fresh, ripe plum with hints of herb and sweet spices, violet and lavender aromas are present against a backdrop of cedar. Juicy with a velvety texture, the fine tannins are enhanced by the precise freshness. The tacky finish lingers at length. This is an elegant, voluminous wine; the 2019 is an accomplished approach to the variety. An upgrade for lovers of the Mendoza Malbec. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2021
Unctuous and fine-grained flavors of dark currant and ripe cherry are supported by medium-grained tannins in this red, which is creamy midpalate, with concentrated chocolate mousse notes on the finish. Drink now through 2026. 13,000 cases made, 7,000 cases imported. (Kim Marcus)
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2019 Old Vine Malbec comes from old ungrafted vineyards irrigated by traditional flood irrigation in the Uco Valley in Mendoza. It’s a floral, juicy and varietal Malbec with nicely integrated oak and a lively palate with pungent flavors, vibrant acidity and fine and round tannins. 180,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2022
Bell pepper, eucalyptus and cherry are displayed in the nose of this blend of 74% Malbec and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has an herbal character, with green bell-pepper flavors followed by plum and hints of dark chocolate. Good acidity and moderate tannins makes it very approachable. (Jesica Vargas)
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022

  6. Cheval des Andes

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59327

    RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2019 Cheval des Andes has a more reductive vinification and élevage, making the wine a bit shy and in need of time to open up, as one of their objectives was to make it more age-worthy. Another objective is to get to a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, which they achieved in this vintage for the first time, going back to the initial character of the wine, which was the idea of Argentinean winemaker Roberto de la Mota; so, they are closing the circle and going back to the initial idea, with more suggestions from the Cheval Blanc team. This is the first vintage fully under the charge of the new French winemaker, Gerald Gabillet, who fermented by plot, isolating some specific parts of the vineyard, like the borders where you tend to get higher yields because of the irrigation. It matured in 225- and 400-liter oak barrels and in oak vats. They used more barrels and vats from Stockinger, which they like and rotate; the wine spends an average of 13 to 14 months in oak, but some lots get 11 months and others get 16. 2019 was a mild vintage, cooler than 2017 and warmer than 2018, with rain at the right time, which helped to avoid hydric stress, and without extremes (which they had in 2020 with three weeks of extreme heat). The wine is young and tender and a bit oaky, which Gabillet attributed to the reductiveness; it’s ripe without excess, with around 14.2% alcohol, mellow acidity and velvety tannins. There’s more Cabernet here, so the aromatic expression can be something between 2017 and 2018, but Cabernet marks the palate a lot and makes the wine more age-worthy, as it provides the structure and length that the Malbec lacks. So, the wine might be less accessible when young and should develop slowly in bottle. It’s tasty and supple and has the ingredients and the balance for what they are aiming for. In the following vintages, they follow this path, and Gabillet feels that having more precision allows the wines to reflect the differences between vintages better. They produce around 100,000 bottles. It was bottled in late January 2021. The way they want to describe the wine is the Argentinean expression of Cheval Blanc. And I can only agree. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2019 Cheval des Andes is a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from Las Compuertas and Paraje Altamira, Mendoza. The 2019 was 40% aged in 225-liter barrels, 40% in 500-liter barrels and 20% in foudres. It’s red with violet flecks in the glass. It has a fresh nose of plum and blackcurrant accompanied by hints of white pepper, mint and violets over a bed of cedar and sandalwood. On the palate, the feel is finely grained with a leaner, more agile flow than in previous years, while the freshness brings plenty of energy before the lengthy finish of fruit and country herb aromas. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
    JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 30, 2022
A refined but spicy Cheval, showing charcoal, blueberries, wild herbs, lavender and hints of bacon and cedar. Medium to full body with extremely fine tannins that get dialed into the fruit with violet, spices and sweet blue fruit at the end. Long and subtle. Drink or hold.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
A bold and structured red, with aromas of smoke and graphite leading to rich, concentrated tiers of blackberry, cassis and plum. Beneath the muscle is ample fresh acidity, carrying abundant violet and spice nuances toward the lengthy finish, which reveals fine tannins. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2034. 17,000 cases made, 5,950 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

  10. Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Appellation Gualtallary

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59284

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2019 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary comes from specific soils, two small three-hectare plots in the Cerros del Jaboncillo, where they find more caliche and limestone in Tupungato Winelands. They believe this place transmits the maximum expression of limestone to Malbec, giving a structured wine with fine-grained tannins with the wilderness from Gualtallary. It fermented in small concrete vats with indigenous yeasts at some 26 degrees Celsius for 20 days. Eighty-five percent of the volume matured in untoasted 3,500-liter French oak foudres for 20 months while the rest was kept in concrete. They sell it a little later than the Altamira because they feel Gualtallary needs a little more time in bottle; therefore, they are now offering the 2019 vintage, a very balanced wine that talks about the place where it was born. This is vibrant and expressive, with a complex nose and especially a lively palate with effervescent acidity and very fine-boned with elegant but firm tannins (they say “Serralunga-like” tannins). I find the recurring iron-like note of blood and fresh meat here too, intermixed with the wild flowers, herbs and spices. This has depth and complexity, and if Altamira is Barbaresco, Gualtallary is Barolo… 10,000 bottles were filled in January 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 30, 2022
Dense and powerful, but in a very fresh and scented way, with violet, hibiscus, oyster-shell and hot-stone notes to the black and blue fruit. Almost a bit gamey with some wet earth. Full-bodied and quite dense on the palate. There is volume, with succulents and real structure, and, of course, some fine austerity. Quite puristic and intellectual, far from flattering. Give it some time to fully unwind itself. Best from 2025.

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The BenMarco range offers very good quality for the price, and the 2019 BenMarco Cabernet Sauvignon, produced with grapes from Los Árboles in Tunuyán, is a textbook varietal example with balsamic and herbal notes, great definition and balance, ripeness and finesse. It matured in second use French barriques for 11 months. 48,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

  12. Susana Balbo Signature Malbec

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#57105

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2019 Malbec Susana Balbo Signature contains a 6% dash of Petit Verdot, both from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley and was aged in 30% new barrels for 13 months. Striking purple in the glass. The complex nose presents notes of plum and sour cherry with hints of violets, cedar and herbs. Free in the mouth, the juicy freshness and fine, chalky tannins dominate the palate, lending outline and depth. The finish is compact and structured by the reactive tannins. A couple more years in the bottle will do the 2019 a world of good. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2019 Susana Balbo Signature Malbec, produced with grapes from Finca La Delfina in Paraje Altamira, contained 4% Petit Verdot, and that could be the reason why it felt a bit roasted when tasted next to the 2018 that was balanced by Cabernet Franc. It felt slightly riper, and the tannins were grainy. It needs food. 144,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020.

  13. Colomé Estate Malbec

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56320

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
Colomé Estate wines are growing more and more stylish and precise. One of the keys was the addition of an optical grape selector that allows winemakers to discard the dehydrated grapes. The 2019 vintage of the Malbec Estate is thus much fruitier with ripe plum and cherry over balsamic, herbal notes and a touch of sunny Calchaquí syrup. Both concentrated and juicy, the firm tannins sculpt the good volume and keep the energy in check, ensuring that it’s merely sprightly in contrast to the booming power of previous vintages. As pure and primary as ever but now with greater elegance.
    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, May 5, 2021
A medium-to full-bodied red with aromas of violets, oyster shell, green olives, salted plums and baked blueberries. Firm, tight-grained tannins and bright acidity. Savory and saline with bitter berries on the finish. Try from 2023.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2019 Estate Malbec mixes grapes from the different altitudes where they have vineyards: 1,800, 2,300, 2,600 and 3,111 meters! It’s ripe at 14.9% alcohol, perhaps because of the heat wave in March, and the wine is primary and a bit heady, with varietal notes of decayed violets, raspberries and some spice. It has abundant, slightly grainy tannins and a dry finish. 280,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2022

  14. BenMarco Expresivo

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59511

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
Susana Balbo’s 2019 BenMarco Expresivo is 82% Malbec combined with 18% Cabernet Franc, both from the Uco Valley and was 70% aged in new barrels and the rest in used for 14 months. An intense purple in hue, the precise aromas include plum and blackcurrant with herbal notes and hints of jalapeño over a delicate bed of oak. In the mouth, it’s compact but juicy with a medium body and long-lasting, fruity flavor in which the finely grained tannins take charge to define a texture that stays delicate in spite of the overall vigor. A modern wine best left for at least a year. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56626

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
I tasted two vintages of the estate Malbec, of which the 2019 Malbec feels fresher and more elegant, with expressive aromas of berries and aromatic herbs, a spicy twist but nicely integrated and in the background. This has a medium-bodied palate with soft tannins and great balance.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
The 2019 Malbec Mendel comes from a vineyard first planted in 1928 in Mayor Drummond, Luján de Cuyo and was aged for 12 months in barrels, 1/3 of them new. A vivid purple in the glass, the perfumed nose offers aromas of prune and ripe fruit with sweet spices, white pepper, cedar and other notes from the aging process. In the mouth, it’s terse with an expansive, tacky palate, good freshness and ripe, fruity flavors. A classical, well-rounded Mendoza red.
    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 8, 2021
