When one thinks of the great wine regions of Italy, Tuscany is one of the first to come to mind. Tuscan wines embody the hilly, sun-kissed terroir, producing generous and fleshy red wines and a few notable white wines.

The dominant red grape in Tuscan wines is Sangiovese. From Chanti in a traditional fiasco (straw basket), to the majestic wines of Chianti Classico, Bolgheri, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and the king of all Tuscan wines Brunello di Montalcino, Sangiovese found a home to achieve perfect ripeness, flavor, and character.

Other great wines of Tuscany are the wines we refer to as "Super Tuscans." These wines combine the skill of Italian winemaking with internationally planted grape varieties, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. These grapes also thrive in the soil and climate of Tuscany.

  1. Pian Dell’Orino Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#60084

    VN9999 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra is hauntingly dark, complex and powerful in the glass. Coaxing reveals a blend of incense and curries, then cinnamon and clove and, finally, dried strawberries and mint. This casts a dense textural wave of red and black fruits across the palate, laced with blood orange and sweet spice nuances; a brilliant acidity also lifts it. It’s only through the finish that the 2016 reveals its firm tannic core while vibrating with residual tension and finishing with a lingering salted licorice note. The Bassolino di Sopra is holding its power in reserve, and it comes across as deceptively delicate at this moment. That said, this is a masterpiece in the making. Only 1,080 bottles and 600 Magnums were produced. (Eric Guido)

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
Luminous red color. Perfumed red rose, violet, sour red cherry and minerals on the absolutely captivating nose. Then fresh juicy and very precise, with laser-like delivery of red cherry and raspberry flavors that linger long on the vibrant finish. Steel fermented only, differently from the 2017 Rosso (a year in which yields were so low that they were able to place all the wine in barrel and carry out fermentation there).

The 2020 Chianti Classico is striking. Bright, punchy and vibrant, the 2020 possesses terrific energy from start to finish. Sweet red-fleshed fruit, cedar, blood orange, spice and incense are front and center. The 2020 screams with character. Once again, Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi has crafted an exceptional Chianti Classico that punches well above its weight. (Antonio Galloni)

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#52310

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2020
Bright cherry and juniper flavors are the main flavor themes, augmented by strawberry, wild thyme, stone and loam notes. Taut, elegant and well-structured, balanced and long. The finish reveals this wine’s potential. Best from 2023 through 2045. 525 cases made.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione shows an intense display of crushed raspberry and tart cherry, leaning to the darker and spicier spectrum, showing exotic brown spice, cedar, and shavings of baker’s chocolate. On the palate, soft textures give way to ripe black cherries with a rich, confectionery note, as brisk acids add energy, and saline-minerals slowly saturate. The finish is long, as residual acids sizzle upon the senses, tapering off to reveal pretty red berry fruits with a savory herbal twist. The 2015 Piaggione is already quite open, coming across as almost creamy on the palate, with vibrant primary fruit that nearly masks its structural core.

Easygoing and enjoyable, this has pretty aromas of violet, eucalyptus and wild berry. The smooth palate boasts ripe raspberry, juicy black cherry and star anise accompanied by pliant, polished tannins. Drink through 2024. (Kerin O’Keefe)
    JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 11, 2021
Plenty of sour-cherry and floral aromas with hints of orange peel. It’s medium-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Very typical Chianti Classico. Drink now.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Open and fluid, this red evokes blackberry and blueberry fruit, framed by earth and underbrush notes. There’s a solid structure, with bright acidity in tandem with dusty tannins. Sangiovese, Colorino and Pugnitello. Best from 2023 through 2030. 33,300 cases made, 11,400 cases imported.

  8. Tenuta di Trinoro

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56636

    RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
This is a stunning wine and one of the best in this report covering the icons of Tuscany. The 2019 Tenuta di Trinoro is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Fruit is sourced from the very best parcels, and the blending formula changes according to vintage and the style desired by vintner Andrea Franchetti. These vineyard parcels vary in altitude, ranging from 400 to 600 meters above sea level, and the soils are quite varied with pockets of clay, sand and rock. The Trinoro is profoundly deep and pure with a solid core of black fruit that is framed by an elegant contour of spice, tobacco, smoke and crushed stone. To the palate, the wine is long and the finish can be counted in minutes, but the entire experience is beautifully streamlined and velvety. This vintage saw an important freeze event on the 7th of May, and 9,000 fire candles were lit in the lower vineyard blocks to fight off frost damage.
    VN97+97+ pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Tenuta di Trinoro is a surprisingly reticent wine. That’s not a descriptor I find myself reaching for often here, but it seems appropriate. Medium in body and quite nervy, the 2019 is going to need time to come together. The tannins are a bit severe at this stage. And yet there is plenty of Trinoro intensity waiting to emerge. Time brings out hints of dark-fleshed fruit, spice, mocha, licorice and incense. There’s plenty to look forward to.

  9. Tenuta di Trinoro Campo di Magnacosta

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56635

    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
If you love Cabernet Franc, please direct your attention here. The Tenuta di Trinoro 2019 Campo di Magnacosta is a study in the intensity, power and depth of this grape. Campo di Magnacosta was the first of several single-vineyard parcels planted to this variety. The first bottling from this 1.5-hectare site was made in 2011, and this year a mere 2,122 bottles were released. The wine is profound and pure with luscious dark fruit, sharp minerality, spice and etched contours. You get that distinctive hint of slate or pencil shaving that is especially characteristic of this Cabernet Franc. Its full-bodied texture wraps smoothly over the palate, and the tannins have been expertly integrated.
    VN94+94+ pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Campo di Magnacosta comes as very tightly wound. Bright red/purplish toned fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper lend notable and salivating energy to this decidedly focused Franc. It’s amazing to see just how expressive these wines are with regards to site and vintage. Let’s see if this fleshes out a bit more with time.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021
Bay leaf, tomato leaf and thyme aromas add a savory element to the black currant and black cherry fruit, with lively acidity and compact tannins providing support as this winds down on the lingering finish. Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2042. 176 cases made, 55 cases imported.

Pretty aromas and flavors of currants, asphalt and bark fill the glass. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Unfiltered. Drink in 2024 and onwards.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2022
A polished red, this offers plum, blackberry, black currant, leather and a hint of wild herb aromas and flavors. Balanced and harmonious, with refined tannins gracing the long, iron-tinged finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2040. 4,200 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. 2018 / 750 ml. | Item#59846

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens nicely in the glass, drawing upon more intensity and depth as it does. It shows firm lines and a fleshed-out mouthfeel that encourages plenty of layering and textural richness. That velvety quality is the enduring signature of this estate, one that has achieved consistent results over the years. The only outlier to this pretty portrait is a 15% alcohol content that, although well absorbed by the wine’s texture, does risk becoming a distraction. Exactly 28,666 bottles were made. 14. Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#57481

    SP9898 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022
Offers forthcoming aromas and flavors of blackberry, black currant, licorice, tobacco and vanilla backed by vivid acidity and dusty tannins, with a long, saline finish. Showing enough fruit and structure to absorb the oakiness over time, this is balanced overall and poised for a promising future. Best from 2026 through 2045. 800 cases made, 350 cases imported.
    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
Rich and deeply alluring, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wafts up to display crushed ashen stone mixed with hints of ginger, dusty florals and black cherry preserves. This is velvety-smooth and pliant in feel, lifted by cooling herbal and mineral tones, as an opulent wave of ripe red and black fruits washes across the palate, leaving a staining of minerals and spice in its wake. It’s long and structured, in need of further time to come fully into focus, yet somehow the 2016 Riserva remains completely fresh, tapering off to inner earth tones and hints of blueberry. Time will reveal further depths. This is an utterly classic Uccelliera Brunello in the making.
    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a terrific wine: bold, well-defined, powerful and balanced. There are many good things to relate, but the high alcohol content (measured at 15.5%) is the only distraction. This is a trend in the Riserva category in the 2016 vintage. The bouquet shows black cherry, cassis, earth, leather and dried roses. The palate offers soft fruit flavors supported by firm oak tannins. Coming back to the bottle 24 hours later, I found impressive integration and smoothness that took away from that alcohol heat. Production is 9,600 bottles.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021
This is really polished and refined, yet remains polished and beautiful, with cherries and berries, as well as light hazelnut and walnut undertones. Compact and silky. Drink after 2024, but already so attractive.

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
The 2018 Balifico, Volpaia’s Sangiovese/ Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is fabulous. Rich and inky, the 2018 offers up a compelling mélange of dark berry fruit, dark spice, licorice and espresso. I especially admire the wine’s textural richness. I imagine the 2018 will drink well for many, many years to come. In this tasting it is a total knock-out.
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
Alluring violet, black currant and black cherry fruit introduces this seductive red, with firm, pointed tannins and vivid acidity providing structure as this glides to a lingering, detailed finish. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2037. 750 cases made, 200 cases imported.
