When one thinks of the great wine regions of Italy, Tuscany is one of the first to come to mind. Tuscan wines embody the hilly, sun-kissed terroir, producing generous and fleshy red wines and a few notable white wines.

The dominant red grape in Tuscan wines is Sangiovese. From Chanti in a traditional fiasco (straw basket), to the majestic wines of Chianti Classico, Bolgheri, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and the king of all Tuscan wines Brunello di Montalcino, Sangiovese found a home to achieve perfect ripeness, flavor, and character.

Other great wines of Tuscany are the wines we refer to as "Super Tuscans." These wines combine the skill of Italian winemaking with internationally planted grape varieties, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. These grapes also thrive in the soil and climate of Tuscany.

A blend of musky dried peaches and apricot offset by savory herbs wafts up from the 2022 Il Rosé di Casanova. 2. Caparzo Rosso di Montalcino

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#59058

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with dusty rose, strawberries and hints of black tea. It’s soft in feel, with a twang of tangerine that gives way to tart cherries and inner cinnamon and clove. This remains nicely energetic while coming across as potent, and it lingers incredibly long. Caparzo found an excellent balance in 2020, and I love the exotic nuances found within. Very nice. (Eric Guido)

    VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2021 Chianti Biskero bursts from the glass with a fruit-forward mix of raspberry, black cherries and autumnal spice. This is plush in feel; vibrant acidity and ripe red berry fruits create an energetic and jovial expression. It leaves just a touch of sweet tannins while tapering off long yet playful in style. This may be a no-frills style of Chianti, but it’s also full of character. The Biskero is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 5% Mammolo, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Merlot. (Eric Guido)

Black-cherry and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Some lead pencil and slate, too. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and firm acidity, which adds verve and tension to the wine. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2020 Chianti Classico is bright, elegant, and wonderfully translucent, with lovely red fruit character and all the elegance of Radda coming through nicely. Mint, blood orange, pipe tobacco, and spice linger on the brilliant, delineated finish. (Antonio Galloni)

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59149

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 La Massa is a very pretty wine. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, chalk and spice accents are all nicely delineated. There’s terrific energy driving the 2019. Once again, Giampaolo Motta’s Sangiovese-based blend delivers the goods. (Antonio Galloni)
    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 8, 2022
This has aromas of sour cherries, currants, lemon leaves and olive stones. It’s juicy and bright with a medium body and fine tannins. Savory, focused and tight finish. Better from 2023.

  8. Piaggia Carmignano Riserva

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#60261

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
It’s hard to put the glass down while exploring the depths of raspberry compote, dried orange peels, roses, exotic spice and a dusting of cocoa that form the absolutely stunning bouquet of the 2019 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia. This is pure elegance. It’s silky and refined as liquid violet florals and ripe red and black fruits easily rush across the palate. Its vibrant acidity maintains exceptional finesse despite the massive primary concentration slowly taking hold. The 2019 finishes long with a coating of sweet tannins and balsamic-tinged cherry. The balance here is amazing, which might trick readers into finishing their bottles far too quickly, but trust me, the best is truly yet to come. This is Rock Star juice. (Eric Guido)

Wickedly fresh and floral, the 2021 Rosso di Montepulciano wafts up from the glass with a bouquet of wild strawberries, stems and all, plus touches of mint and blood orange. This steps softly yet with impact, impressing with fleshy red and blue fruits expertly offset by a salty core of minerality. Raspberry and blueberry preserves and rosy inner florals make the lightly tannic and medium-length finish a total pleasure. This is a beautiful blending of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot. (Eric Guido)

  11. Podere Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56146

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
The 2018 Il Carbonaione is one of the most elegant editions of this flagship wine I can remember tasting. Il Carbonaione is usually a rich, bombastic wine, but the 2018 is sleek, gracious and remarkably refined. The fruit was picked a week later than originally planned because of a family emergency. That results in an exotic Carbonaione that is beguiling but not at all heavy. I can’t wait to see how it ages.

The 2020 Chianti Classico is plump, juicy and absolutely delicious. Soft contours wrap around succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, mocha, spice and new leather. This forward, open-knit Chianti Classico is not terribly complex, but it sure is delicious. (Antonio Galloni)

  14. Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#56958

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is deeply expressive, showing peppery red berries and pomegranate plus hints of tomato leaf and sage, reminding me of that moment you add fresh herbs to a just-finished ragù. This is pure silk on the palate, rich and pliant, as it slowly saturates the senses with mineral-laced red and hints of blue fruit. Intensely primary and licorice-tinged, it tapers off grippy and classically dry to lasting rosy florals. The 2017 is a bit like a tamed beast of a Brunello.

  15. Avignonesi Da•Di Rosso

    Sangiovese Made With Organic Grapes
    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59838

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
A lovely bouquet of lavender, violets and crushed blackberries rises from the 2021 Sangiovese Da-Di. This washes across the palate with an intense wave of fleshy ripe fruits, all balanced by a salty flourish of minerality and tantalizing acidity. The 2021 finishes with grippy concentration yet remains fresh, with blue- and purple-toned inner florals that linger. The Da-di is a varietal Sangiovese that’s refined in amphora, where about one-third of the grapes are left in whole clusters through fermentation. This is an incredibly fun wine to taste.
