When one thinks of the great wine regions of Italy, Tuscany is one of the first to come to mind. Tuscan wines embody the hilly, sun-kissed terroir, producing generous and fleshy red wines and a few notable white wines.
The dominant red grape in Tuscan wines is Sangiovese. From Chanti in a traditional fiasco (straw basket), to the majestic wines of Chianti Classico, Bolgheri, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and the king of all Tuscan wines Brunello di Montalcino, Sangiovese found a home to achieve perfect ripeness, flavor, and character.
Other great wines of Tuscany are the wines we refer to as "Super Tuscans." These wines combine the skill of Italian winemaking with internationally planted grape varieties, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. These grapes also thrive in the soil and climate of Tuscany.

It’s soft in feel, with a twang of tangerine that gives way to tart cherries and inner cinnamon and clove. This remains nicely energetic while coming across as potent, and it lingers incredibly long. This is plush in feel; vibrant acidity and ripe red berry fruits create an energetic and jovial expression. It leaves just a touch of sweet tannins while tapering off long yet playful in style. VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023 It’s hard to put the glass down while exploring the depths of raspberry compote, dried orange peels, roses, exotic spice and a dusting of cocoa that form the absolutely stunning bouquet of the 2019 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia. This is pure elegance. It’s silky and refined as liquid violet florals and ripe red and black fruits easily rush across the palate. Its vibrant acidity maintains exceptional finesse despite the massive primary concentration slowly taking hold. The 2019 finishes long with a coating of sweet tannins and balsamic-tinged cherry. The balance here is amazing, which might trick readers into finishing their bottles far too quickly, but trust me, the best is truly yet to come. This is Rock Star juice. (Eric Guido)

This steps softly yet with impact, impressing with fleshy red and blue fruits expertly offset by a salty core of minerality. Raspberry and blueberry preserves and rosy inner florals make the lightly tannic and medium-length finish a total pleasure. This is a beautiful blending of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot. (Eric Guido)

Il Carbonaione is usually a rich, bombastic wine, but the 2018 is sleek, gracious and remarkably refined. The fruit was picked a week later than originally planned because of a family emergency. That results in an exotic Carbonaione that is beguiling but not at all heavy. I can’t wait to see how it ages.

This is pure silk on the palate, rich and pliant, as it slowly saturates the senses with mineral-laced red and hints of blue fruit. Intensely primary and licorice-tinged, it tapers off grippy and classically dry to lasting rosy florals. The 2017 is a bit like a tamed beast of a Brunello.

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023 A lovely bouquet of lavender, violets and crushed blackberries rises from the 2021 Sangiovese Da-Di. This washes across the palate with an intense wave of fleshy ripe fruits, all balanced by a salty flourish of minerality and tantalizing acidity. The 2021 finishes with grippy concentration yet remains fresh, with blue- and purple-toned inner florals that linger. The Da-di is a varietal Sangiovese that’s refined in amphora, where about one-third of the grapes are left in whole clusters through fermentation. This is an incredibly fun wine to taste.
