When one thinks of the great wine regions of Italy, Tuscany is one of the first to come to mind. Tuscan wines embody the hilly, sun-kissed terroir, producing generous and fleshy red wines and a few notable white wines.

The dominant red grape in Tuscan wines is Sangiovese. From Chanti in a traditional fiasco (straw basket), to the majestic wines of Chianti Classico, Bolgheri, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and the king of all Tuscan wines Brunello di Montalcino, Sangiovese found a home to achieve perfect ripeness, flavor, and character.

Other great wines of Tuscany are the wines we refer to as "Super Tuscans." These wines combine the skill of Italian winemaking with internationally planted grape varieties, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. These grapes also thrive in the soil and climate of Tuscany.

  1. Tenuta Degli Dei Cavalli

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#60156

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, July 14, 2021
Here is a red with a solid palate of red berries, crushed stone and fresh flowers. Full-bodied with beautifully crafted tannins that are soft and relaxed. The fruit character is complex with some fresh mushrooms and rose petals to the dark fruit. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will be much better in two or three years. Drink after 2022. (James Suckling)
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2021
The Tenuta degli Dei 2017 Cavalli sees a base of Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and is a terrific dinner wine. It is polished and deep with some of the fruit nuances you can expect of this vintage. However, the overall effect is balanced and smooth with plenty of fruity power, weight and length. Production is about 16,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

Made with mostly Sangiovese and smaller percentages of Malvasia Nera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano, Marselan and Alicante Bouschet, the 2021 A Quo offers intense fragrances that span from blackberry to dark rose—like one of those deep purple blooms you might see at a specialized florist. It is densely textured with a solid structure. A Quo is a wine of exceptional value, with 73,000 bottles on the market. (Monica Larner)

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56798

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
In a sense, this wine is like the Bosco dei Sugheri but with the addition of one more grape variety in the blend. The Tua Rita 2019 Giusto di Notri is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. I tasted the wine shortly after it had been bottled. With 40,000 bottles made, it should start hitting the market now. The Giusto di Notri offers lots of dark primary fruit with important structure and texture in this classic vintage. Blackberry and black plum cede to spice, tar and campfire ash. There’s nothing not to like in this vintage that far exceeded initial expectations. I look forward to tasting more Tuscan reds from the excellent 2019 growing season.

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56678

    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
Well-defined black cherry and blackberry flavors are shaded by notes of rosemary, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco in this firm and complex red, which shows lovely balance and grip on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 8,000 cases imported.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2018 Legit is a bold, punchy wine that marries varietal aromas and flavors with Castelnuovo Berardenga richness. It’s a combination that works quite well. Blue/black fruit, gravel, spice, dried herbs, lavender and chocolate are front and center in this juicy, open-knit Cabernet Sauvignon. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Sor Ugo is a potent wine. Dried herbs, mocha, tobacco, leather and incense lend striking savory intensity to this tightly wound Bolgheri red. I would give the tannins a few years to soften. There’s plenty to look forward to. (Antonio Galloni)

A linear and vivd red with black-cherry and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Fresh flowers, too. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a bright finish. Give it a year or two, but already very pretty. Drink or hold.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022

    Rosso Toscano
    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#56724

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 5, 2021
Dark berries with walnuts, hazelnuts and white pepper on the nose, following through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins and a chewy yet refined finish. Needs two or three years to come together. Drink after 2023.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022
Vibrant yet silky, boasting black cherry, blackberry, violet and iron flavors. The iron fist emerges by way of the firm tannins, and this finishes with a long aftertaste of fruit and dried herbs. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. Drink now through 2030. 7,920 cases made.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The zesty 2019 Non Confunditur wafts up with a darkly alluring yet also wonderfully fresh bouquet, as blackberries and currants give way to rubbed sage and crushed ashen stone. This is silky-smooth and soothing, casting a polished display of black and red berries across the palate, as mineral-driven tension forms toward the close. Sweet tannins create a sensation of youthful poise, yet they don’t get in the way of the primary fruits that saturate throughout the long finish. Non Confunditur is refined in second and third-pass barriques and tonneaux, and it is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon along with 20% Merlot and 10% Sangiovese.

  10. Argiano Solengo

    Rosso Toscano
    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58633

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Solengo seduces with its richly decadent display of vanilla and mocha-tinged dark fruits and spices, which are wonderfully lifted by minty herbal tones and white smoke. This enters the palate like weighted velvet, smooth and fleshy at first, yet lively, as mineral-tinged black currants mix with fine-grained tannins, clamping down with youthful poise. Like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, this tapers off incredibly long and staining, with echoes of licorice beneath an air of cedar and tobacco; yet somehow, through it all, the palate is left watering for more. It will be many years before the 2019 is ready to show its best, but it will certainly be worth the wait. The Solengo is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese that spends eighteen months refining in a combination of 60% new to 40% second-pass barriques. (Eric Guido)
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2022
Opening to a thick, blackish appearance, the Argiano 2019 Solengo is definitely more concentrated and tightly stitched together next to the 2018 edition. This is a supersized blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot, 20% Merlot and 5% Sangiovese that reveals the extra concentration of the vintage, and the important use of new and used French oak (for 18 months of aging), to create a texturally important and aromatically intense expression. The vines are planted in alluvial soils rich in sand and calcareous marl at 280 to 310 meters in elevation. The grapes are farmed organically and are relatively young, at up to 22 years of age. Plummy fruit and ripe blackberry segues to spice, tar and tobacco. This 2019 vintage shows better tannin management compared to the more astringent 2018 edition. Some 34,000 bottles (heavy glass bottles) were released. (Monica Larner)

  11. Sassicaia

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#60472

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2020 Sassicaia Is a bold, rapturous wine. Dark, fleshy and expansive on the palate, the 2020 offers up scents of blackberry jam, gravel, spice, new leather, licorice and crème de cassis. Potent tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Sassicaia is never a huge wine, the 2020 does seem to have an extra dimension of textural intensity. It’s an intensity that is hugely appealing. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023
Complex aromas and flavors of black currant, blackberry, iron, sweet tobacco and Mediterranean herbs are the hallmarks of this elegant, tensile red, which is already revealing plenty, yet still feels reserved, as though there were many more facets to be discovered. Superb harmony, freshness and a long aftertaste prevail. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2045. 23,300 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
    JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, March 6, 2023
A very perfumed Sassicaia on the nose with forest floor, citrus and deep dark fruits. Blackcurrants. Cedar and black tea. Some balsamic. Pine needles. Full and very succulent. Really long, structured and complete. Tangy and energetic with a linear line of fresh tannins and acidity. Very Sassicaia throughout. 85% cabernet sauvignon and the rest is cabernet franc. Very attractive now in a youthful and vibrant way, but this will be better in three to four years. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)
    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th Jan 2023
The Tenuta San Guido 2020 Bolgheri Sassicaia speaks to those who seek a more voluptuous, opulent and, ultimately, more accessible wine. This vintage is a precise reflection of Coastal Tuscany, as opposed to a more generic “Tuscan” wine from elsewhere in this large central Italian region. You taste the ripeness and soft fruit weight that comes from a coastal appellation with especially bright luminosity and warm Mediterranean offshore breezes. Sassicaia from the cool vintages is a famously reticent or withholding wine in its earliest years, requiring a long lead time before it eases into an ideal drinking window. That’s definitely not the case here. This wine is beautiful and compelling straight out of the gate, showing a lovely mix of dark fruit, oak spice, balanced freshness, textural richness, soft tannins and an expertly contained 14% alcohol content. The wine’s immediate character is what distinguishes this vintage, and I wouldn’t get too fussed by exaggerated cellar-aging ambitions. The wine awards sheer pleasure in its current form, with dazzling primary fruit and soaring intensity over the near and medium term. (Monica Larner)

  12. Antinori Guado Al Tasso

    Bolgheri Superiore
    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59640

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jul 2022
I’ve been tracking the increasing percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend of this iconic Tuscan wine. The 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso is made with 25% Cabernet Franc, with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. That this heat-resistant grape now makes up a quarter of the blend speaks to how vintners are gearing up to counter climate change. These are intelligent choices, and you can count on this wine to maintain that level of extreme elegance and intensity that it is known for (even when Merlot was a bigger part of the blend). Indeed, this is a new and improved Guado al Tasso with focused aromas of pencil shaving, white pepper and crushed stone that frame a rich core of black fruit. A fluttering of dried mint gives lift and power to the bouquet. This is a beautifully linear and powerful red blend. (Monica Larner)
    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022
The 2019 Guado al Tasso is a model of total refinement. Deeply pitched spice, mocha and leather nuances meld into a core of plush dark fruit as the 2019 reveals its considerable charms. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing, but the 2019 has so much more to offer. I admire the wine’s balance and allure, both of which it has in spades. Like so many 2019s, Guado al Tasso is a wine more of energy and persistence than volume. Clean, bracing mineral notes linger on the sublime finish. The 2019 spent 18 months in barrel, 90% new. (Antonio Galloni)
    WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
This gorgeous, full-bodied red opens with layers of aromas including camphor, pipe tobacco, oak-driven spice and ripe black-skinned fruit. Boasting structure and finesse, the intense palate delivers ripe black plum, juicy cherry, licorice and menthol framed in ultrarefined tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2026–2039. (Kerin O’Keefe)
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Smooth and opulent, with black currant, blackberry and plum fruit accented by cedar, vanilla and iron notes. Dense and complex, yet accessible, this is balanced and persistent on the lingering aftertaste. Decant now or wait another year or two. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2040. 2,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

  14. Ca’Marcanda Camarcanda

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59473

    JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/26/2023
The 2019 Camarcanda is a fabulous example of how the estate has been pushing the bar higher consistently and with a steady hand. It is layered and compelling, with rich aromas of sage, anise, lavender, black cherry liqueur, and crushed salty limestone earth. A profound and impeccable wine with harmonious depth and balanced structure, it is concentrated and compact throughout, but it drives forward in the mouth with seamless energy and somehow retains the incredible mineral texture that the 2018 shows off with distinction. With super-fine tannins, it has a long arch to its expression and balances sweet fruit with a Tuscan stamp of herbaceous and mineral accents. Incredible. Drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th Jan 2023
This is a gorgeous vintage that continues to flesh out beautifully. I added an extra point to my score since the last time I tasted the 2019 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda in order to underline the great potential of this vintage. This wine could legally be a Bolgheri Superiore, but Angelo Gaja prefers not to use qualifying wine terms such as Superiore, Classico or Riserva in his various wine projects spanning from Piedmont to Tuscany to Etna. Semantics aside, this is a gorgeous wine—one of the best made at Ca’ Marcanda for sure—with impressive intensity and balance. Dark fruit and blackberry are contrasted against spice, tobacco, grilled rosemary and Mediterranean bramble. The 2019 vintage saw favorable weather conditions and “just the right amount of rain,” Gaja says. (Monica Larner)
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
This verges on thick yet remains balanced and vibrant, courtesy of the lively acidity. Boasts blackberry, dark plum and blueberry flavors framed by tar and toasty oak. The finish is both dense and clean, with a hint of licorice. Excellent length and potential. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2038. 1,500 cases made, 225 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
    VN94+94+ pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Camarcanda is a very good example of how much the wines have charged here. Medium in body with good depth, the 2019 Camarcanda is a tightly wound wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Dark cherry, mocha, new leather, licorice and spice build nicely, with pretty floral and mineral accents that liven up the finish. The 2019 is classy, elegant and polished. Give it a few years, as the tannins are pretty intense today, but this softens nicely with air. (Antonio Galloni)

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2019
Dark, powerful and explosive, D’Alceo is one of the epic wines of 2015. Crème de cassis, plum, graphite, sage, lavender, and menthol rush out of the glass in a deep, beautifully resonant wine loaded with class. A wine with striking inner sweetness, depth and structure, the 2015 will thrill readers lucky enough to own it for a number of years to come. The 2015 was fermented in cement and then spent 14 months in oak. It is rich, sumptuous and simply irresistible.
    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
Featuring concentrated flavors of blackberry, black currant, earth and leafy underbrush, this red is wrapped in a shroud of stiff tannins that upsets the balance a little. Nevertheless, this will come into its own with decanting, a little aging in bottle or paired with grilled steak or lamb. Delivers excellent intensity, energy and length. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2029. 925 cases made, 150 cases imported.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
This is a big and self-assured red with lots of charcoal, vanilla, dried blackberries, barbecued meat and resin. Full-bodied and very chewy indeed with a ton of dark fruit and raw power. A delicate line of acidity pulls the brakes on. Drink in 2027!
