Piedmont (or Piemonte in Italian) is one of the most popular Italian wine regions and is located in the northwest corner of Italy in the foothills of the Alps.

The red Nebbiolo grape is king in the hilly region called Langhe. The famed wines of Barolo and Barbaresco are made totally from Nebbiolo. The grape creates a sneaky combination of finesse and power; aromatic, delicate aromas of rose petals, yet with distinctly muscular palate-staining tannins. Other red wines produced in the region are usually made from the Barbera and Dolcetto grape.

Currently some of the most popular wines of Italy with many consumers are sweet ones named after the area called Asti. "Asti Spumante" is made by the charmat method of production in which the wines undergo secondary fermentation in tank and then are bottled under pressure. They wines typically use a Champagne-style cork enclosure. Moscato d'Asti also is produced in this region and is made in a frizzante or slightly-sparkling style.

The dry white wines of Piedmont are typically made from Arneis or Cortese. Some wines made with Cortese are often labeled "Gavi" after the area in Piedmont in which they are made.

  1. E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#54630

    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, May 5, 2021
Plums and ripe strawberries with some crushed-stone undertones. Full-bodied and layered with round, rich tannins and an intensely fruity finish. But then, some fine tannins that are cashmere-like. A little tight at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Chiara Boschis is a historic proponent of organic farming, and she lobbied to make the entire Cannubi cru a certified organic vineyard. Her 2017 Barolo Cannubi shows terrific balance and clean intensity in a vintage that presented quite a few challenges across the appellation due to the heat and drought, along with other issues such as an unexpected frost in April, but that caused the biggest damage to the lowest elevations. The Cannubi is less overtly fruity than the blended Via Nuova or the Mosconi. Instead, it has a more prominent saline imprint with mineral and crushed limestone. However, the quality of the tannins in this release is superior and silkier, and that added structure and focus give the Cannubi the longest drinking window in my opinion of these three new releases. 4,000 bottles were produced.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The Barolo Cannubi is absolutely gorgeous in 2017. Hot and brutally dry conditions notwithstanding, the Cannubi is creamy and sensual in the glass, with impeccable balance, soft, racy edges and tons of allure. It is easily one of the most sensual, compelling Barolos of the year. Ripe dark red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and cedar meld into the beautifully textured, resonant finish. I am so impressed with the wine’s freshness. Perhaps the anti-hail netting helped keep some shade on the fruit. What a wine.

  2. E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Mosconi

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#54829

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, scorched earth, spice and leather add to an impression of gravitas. This is an especially somber, potent Barolo that needs time to soften. Even so, it will always be a brute. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty. The Barolo Mosconi emerges from the estates oldest vines, which are 70–80 years old, and is aged in barrique.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Made with organically grown clones of Michel and Lampia, the E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2017 Barolo Mosconi softly presents bright berry aromas, raspberry, wild cherry, crushed limestone and delicate floral tones of lilacs and violets. Like other wines from this hot vintage, this expression from the Mosconi cru in Monforte d’Alba has that unique floral signature that is precious and unexpected. The wine shows great depth and balance with a pretty intensity that spreads over the palate. The tannins are dry with some dustiness, but the mouthfeel is spot-on in terms of length and polish. Some 9,000 bottles were crafted.

  3. E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Via Nuova

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#54629

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is stellar. In 2017, the Via Nuova is a bit nervous, the sign of a Barolo that is going to need a number of years to unwind. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper add pretty aromatic top notes. As always, the Via Nuova is the most taut Barolo in the range. Via Nuova is a blend of seven vineyard sites; Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste (in Barolo); Ravera and Mosconi (in Monforte); and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga).
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
This classic wine represents a traditional blend of sites including Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte d’Alba (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga d’Alba (Gabutti and Baudana). The organic E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2017 Barolo Via Nuova reveals ripe cherry and raspberry that greet you with a bright, fruit-forward bouquet. I feel the hot-vintage fruit ripeness more in this release than I did in the smaller releases of Mosconi or Cannubi. The wine is slender and elegant in terms of mouthfeel, with a good, polished feel and some subtle bite from the tannins on the close. There are some grassy notes and a spicy point of crushed black pepper as well. 13,000 bottles were produced.

  4. Enzo Boglietti Barolo Arione

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#53260

    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Enzo Boglietti 2016 Barolo Arione draws its fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, from a vineyard site that has gained much attention in recent years. Arione has thick silty soils and these contribute to the gentle finesse and floral perfumes of the wine. Don’t forget power. There is plenty of muscle flexing in this brawny, determined Nebbiolo with firm tannins and deep structure. A mere 2,000 bottles were produced. Count on this wine to complete a long and rewarding drinking arc.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
The 2016 Barolo Arione is one of the standouts in this range. Bright red fruit, iron, smoke and chalk give the 2016 plenty of Arione savoriness. The tannins are a bit biting at this stage, but then again, that is Arione. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure and feel, the 2016 packs a good bit of punch.

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#58920

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, January 3, 2022
Intense nose of fresh and dried red berries, together with dried leaves and dark, clove-like spice. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a concentrated bead of bright fruit and minerals. The tannins pull hard on the finish for now, so wait for this one. It’s structured and layered and definitely built to last. Hold until 2024.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The Fabio Oberto 2016 Barolo showcases a shiny or glossy textural quality that is a common characteristic of Nebbiolo from this classic vintage. The wine imparts an especially smooth and silky entry to the palate. In the case of this Barolo, the aromas are a little mixed and varied with dried fruit, savory spice, musky earth, leather and a point of black truffle. There is a hint of plastic or animal that fades quickly as the wine takes in more air in the glass. (Monica Larner)

  6. Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo Cannubi

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#58668

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
This delicate Nebbiolo opens to wild berry, rose, pressed violet, earth and powered licorice. The 2018 Barolo Cannubi takes a classic approach and underlines the elegant character of this most celebrated MGA site in the village of Barolo. The wine feels light and weightless when it first hits the palate, but don’t be deceived. It offers ample power and length once you take it all in. (Monica Larner)
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022
The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is bright and effusive, as wines form this site tend do be. Crushed flowers, spice, new leather and macerated cherry are some of the notes that soar from the glass. The Cannubi offers fine depth and tons of site character, both of which were hard to achieve in 2018. (Antonio Galloni)

    RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
The Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2016 Barolo Riserva Cannubi is a classic beauty with thin, delicate lines that frame a core of profound and very elegant fruit. You can attribute many descriptors to the bouquet, from wild berry, pressed rose, earth, rust, crushed rock and light spice. But no one aroma out-powers the next, and together they work in careful harmony. It’s also important to point out the quality of the tannins in this Riserva, which remain elegant and firm. This bottle is a great candidate for long cellar aging. (Monica Larner)

  8. G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#60432

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023
Delivers a whiff of grilled beef that gives way to flavors of cherry, raspberry, rose hip and mineral. Compact, even austere, as assertive tannins emerge on the resonant finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 6,500 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Albe is a nuanced, understated wine, but it is also a rare Albe that needs time in bottle. Sweet floral and spice notes open first, leading to an attractive core of Nebbiolo fruit. Gentle and understated, with lovely precision, the 2019 Albe is a hushed wine that is more about energy than size. I have seen the Albe really blossom with a few years in bottle. I expect that will be the case here as well given its super-classic feel. (Antonio Galloni)

  9. G.D. Vajra Barolo Ravera

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#58729

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
Seamlessly stitched together, the G.D. Vajra 2018 Barolo Ravera reveals tight layering and smooth texture. Fruit comes from an amphitheater of vines with Tortoniana epoch sandstone clay that is typical of parts of Barolo and Novello. What stands out here is the mineral character of the wine. It frames a dark core of plum, dark cherry and soft spice. (Monica Larner)
    WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22
This wine shows a darker and more savory profile than Vajra’s Costa di Rose, its black-cherry flavors tinged with notes of licorice and tobacco. Scents of lavender and violet lend a delicate touch to the wine, which continued to gain verve and freshness with time in the glass.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a powerful, tightly wound wine. Gravel, smoke, cured meats, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol emerge, but only with quite a bit of reticence. This deceptively mid-weight Barolo has a good bit of brawn. It will be interesting to see if the fruit emerges from behind the tannins. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
This supple, elegant red leads with bright cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors. Reveals details of tar and eucalyptus as this firms up on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042. 508 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
This focused, fragrant red offers aromas of woodland berry, new leather, wild herb and pipe tobacco. The linear palate exhibits dried cherry, mocha and toasted nut set against close-grained tannins that leave a drying finish. Drink 2023–2029. (Kerin O’Keefe)
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Rich, ripe mixed berries and perfumed bark on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with some lightly firm tannin giving support to the fruit. Lacks the complexity of recent vintages, but has a promising core. Give it a while to broaden out. Try from 2024.

  11. Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo

    2010 / 750 ml. | Item#40616

    RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Jun 2013
A banner wine for Gaja, the 2010 Sori San Lorenzo brings the infinite and ethereal aromas associated with Nebbiolo into startling focus and clarity. Again, like the Sori Tildin, the structure and tannic firmness of the wine will carry the wine forward over the years and decades ahead. It demands much more time until it fully blossoms. I walked through the San Lorenzo vineyard with Gaia Gaja and she showed me some of their recent activity. Every second row is planted with barley that acts as a natural rototiller given its aggressive root system. Borrowing other “New World” ideas, they’ve started compost piles with Californian red worms and are using (with less success, I’m told) wooden tree boxes to repopulate the birds. All of this must seem very odd to the neighbors. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2040.
    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2014
The 2010 Sorì San Lorenzo jumps from the glass with lavender, violets, plums, smoke and licorice, all in a lifted, precise style built on finesse. The tannins are remarkably sweet and polished for such a young wine. The pulsating fruit and sense of structure are reminiscent of the 1999, but here, there is perhaps a little more finesse and slightly more compelling balance.

  12. Gaja Sorì Tildin

    2013 / 750 ml. | Item#44185

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2016
As always, the Sorì Tildìn is a wine of nuance and delineation above all else. Beautifully sculpted and precise, the 2013 offers up a compelling interplay of dark red cherry, mint, lavender and licorice. A subtle accent of French oak adds nuance without detracting from the wine’s translucent personality and overall energy. At the same time, it is hard for the mind not to wander a bit and imagine what the wine might have tasted like had it been made more along the lines of the Costa Russi, especially given this site’s inherent finesse. But back to the present. The 2013 Sorì Tildìn is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty from Gaja.
    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016
The 2013 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn sees fruit sourced from a vineyard site located directly above Costa Russi. This fruit is harvested at 260 meters above sea level, while the latter is located 30 meters lower in elevation. The age of the vines is slightly younger as well, with 45-years-old being the average age. That subtle change in vineyard location does much to shape the generosity and bounty of the bouquet. There is a distinct softness and roundness here that comes forth as dark cherry, pressed blackberry and plum, with tobacco and leather in a supporting role. This Barbaresco stands on solid feet with tight textural richness that comes exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape. Breaking with past tradition, Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is made with a single variety.

  13. Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#59859

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2022
The 2018 Barolo embarks on a rather straightforward performance initially, and the wine gains in complexity as it opens in the glass. The bouquet is elegant and tapered with wild berry, spice and licorice. It is ample in terms of mouthfeel, delivering medium texture and depth. Classic and elegant are two appropriate descriptors. The estate released 12,000 bottles in this vintage. (Monica Larner)
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2018 Barolo is a very pretty wine for this vintage. Sweet dried cherry, mint, spice, worn-in leather and dried herbs are all laced together in this attractive, somewhat ethereal Barolo. All the elements are nicely balanced. The 2018 won’t be a long-lived Barolo, but it is quite appealing today. (Antonio Galloni)

  15. La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#52511

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi is outrageously beautiful. Dense, powerful and rich, the 2016 races out of the glass with huge fruit to match its classically mid-weight profile. Super-ripe red/purplish berry fruit, wild flowers, licorice and mint play off the huge tannins with real grace. Readers have to be patient, but the 2016 Starderi is a rock star wine. That’s pretty much all there is to it.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Starderi Vürsù starts with a no-nonsense obscure color and ends with lots of dark fruit on the close. In between, it shows a spot of bitterness on the tongue, delivered with ripe fruit and some rather tight tannins. There are lots of tar notes here too, along with the sort of resin and camphor ash you might not have been expecting from such a youthful Barbaresco. But this one has a heavy center of gravity and is not to be trifled with. It’s a big and bold wine that demands a rare cut of beef. Some 14,500 bottles were made.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Raspberry coulis, dried red plums, vanilla, cedar and spice box make for a pronounced and beguiling nose. Full-bodied and very powerful on the palate, yet the tannins are polished and the acidity focused and refreshing. Drink from 2023.
