Piedmont (or Piemonte in Italian) is one of the most popular Italian wine regions and is located in the northwest corner of Italy in the foothills of the Alps.

The red Nebbiolo grape is king in the hilly region called Langhe. The famed wines of Barolo and Barbaresco are made totally from Nebbiolo. The grape creates a sneaky combination of finesse and power; aromatic, delicate aromas of rose petals, yet with distinctly muscular palate-staining tannins. Other red wines produced in the region are usually made from the Barbera and Dolcetto grape.

Currently some of the most popular wines of Italy with many consumers are sweet ones named after the area called Asti. "Asti Spumante" is made by the charmat method of production in which the wines undergo secondary fermentation in tank and then are bottled under pressure. They wines typically use a Champagne-style cork enclosure. Moscato d'Asti also is produced in this region and is made in a frizzante or slightly-sparkling style.

The dry white wines of Piedmont are typically made from Arneis or Cortese. Some wines made with Cortese are often labeled "Gavi" after the area in Piedmont in which they are made.

  1. Vietti Barolo Castiglione

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#60433

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut. (Antonio Galloni)

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#51278

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
You can taste the softness and richness of the warm vintage in the 2015 Barolo Margheria. The wine offers dark fruit flavors and lots of rich, plump fruit at the back. This is a softly textured wine that can also be consumed in the near or medium term. This single-vineyard Barolo from Serralunga d’Alba ages in botti grandi for 36 months. The vines are 60 years old, and the soils are rich with limestone clay. Some 6,200 bottles were made.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
The 2015 Barolo Margheria shows the textural breadth of Serralunga in its compelling interplay of succulent, layered fruit and bright, soil-driven tones, with mineral inflections that add layers of complexity. Sage, tobacco, cedar, rose petal, menthol, anise and dried flowers fill out the wine’s frame effortlessly. All the elements are nicely balanced. In 2015 the Margheria is all class.

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Dec 2022
The Bel Colle 2019 Barbaresco is a well-balanced wine with tart fruit, wild cherry, violet, earth and hints of tangy licorice. The presentation is simple and powerful, and that’s exactly what makes this vintage work. Wines from 2019 tend to show a little more natural richness and concentration. That is also the case here. VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2016 Barolo Riserva Monvigliero is powerful and structured. Its pedigree is evident. A wine of vertical depth and intensity, the Riserva impresses with its nuance and overall sense of transparency. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, dried flowers and licorice build into the wonderfully sculpted finish. This is such a gorgeous wine. (Antonio Galloni)

    VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2020 Barbera d’Alba is a soft, open-knit wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. In 2020, the Barbera is on the lighter side, as is typical for the year. There is lovely purity to the red berry, spice and floral notes. And of course, plenty of charm.

  10. Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barbera D’Alba Aves

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#56629

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2020 Barbera d’Alba Aves is a gorgeous wine. Over the last few years, Fabio Alessandria has dialed back the overtness in the Aves, which yields a much more refined wine than in the past. In 2020, the Aves is especially restrained and also not that far stylistically than the straight Barbera. I would drink it over the next few years, while the fruit is vibrant. The Aves is a selection of fruit from vineyards in Verduno and Roddi. It sees about ten months in 500L barrels, including some acacia in the mix. This super-classic Barbera is a jewel of a wine.

  11. Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barbera D’Alba Aves

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59663

    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Aves is a selection of the estate’s best Barbera. A wine of gravitas and tension, the Aves is lights-out in 2021. There’s plenty of the depth of past editions, but less overt concentration and oak imprint than in the past. In the last few years, Fabio Alessandria has dialed back some of the textural intensity in this wine in favor of greater freshness. The result is a striking Barbera that is also more in line with the rest of the wines in the range. (Antonio Galloni)
    JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Pouring a bit more in the purple range of the spectrum and from a single tonneau, the 2021 Barbera D’Alba Aves (“aves” means birds in Latin) has more peppery spice, violets, and wet stone. It is medium-bodied but takes on more concentration and richness, with meaty black cherry, turned soil, and tea leaf notes. It also has fine tannins and a good finish. This will be an age-worthy wine for drinking over the next ten years. (Audrey Frick)

  12. Comm. G.B. Burlotto Dolcetto D’Alba

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59664

    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
The 2021 Dolcetto d’Alba is quite understated in this vintage. As always, the use of stems in the Dolcetto lends floral and savory brightness that is quite attractive and distinctive. Medium in body and gracious, the 2021 is an absolute delight. In 2021, the style favors energy and tension over richness. The Dolcetto was done entirely in tank. (Antonio Galloni)
    JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
From vines in both Verduno and Roddi, the 2021 Dolcetto D’Alba is a youthful yet transparent purple, with fresh black raspberry, violet, and crushed rock. Medium-bodied and well-structured, with plum, turned earth, and fresh acidity, I love this for fresh drinking over the next few years. (Audrey Frick)

  13. Conterno Barolo Francia

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#56107

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2017 Barolo Francia is dense, rich and explosive right out of the gate. There is virtually no feeling of tannin, as the creaminess of the fruit is so expansive. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, kirsch, sage and menthol gradually appear as the 2017 starts to open in the glass. In 2017, Francia is decidedly exotic, not to mention such a thrill to taste.

  14. Conterno Barolo Francia

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#58976

    VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022
The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. (Antonio Galloni)
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2012
Offers depth and power, with menthol and wild herbs shading cherry and plum flavors. The balance tips toward the tannins in the end, yet this doesn’t feel overly astringent, just more structured than many wines of the vintage. Picks up a mineral element as this lingers on the finish. Needs time. Best from 2025 through 2043. 2,167 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
    RP94+94–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
Of the three Barolo samples I tasted from barrel (including Arione and Cerretta, which are also from Serralunga d’Alba), the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia was the furthest behind and the hardest to pin down at this stage in its infancy. I have opened my range of scores accordingly to compensate for the magical unknowns that are likely to occur as the wine moves toward greater harmony and integration before its commercial release. The wine is linear and pointedly focused, lacking the width and volume it will gain when given more time to flesh out and relax. The aromas are also quite primary and simple at this point, with dark cherry and even a hint of ripe strawberry ceding gradually to grilled herb, blue flower and baked brick. This vintage of Barolo Francia will require patience. (Monica Larner)

  15. Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva

    2015 / 1.5 L. | Item#56111

    VN9999 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2015 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is magical. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from Arione, so the 2015 is 80% Francia and 20% Arione. That marks a return to Monfortino as a multi-vineyard wine, which it mostly was until 1978, when the first Monfortino from Francia was made. The combination of sites works so well. I remember tasting the 2015 as separate components and seeing what exactly the Arione piece adds, and that is aromatic explosiveness, texture and breadth. Rose petal, mint, sage, tobacco and cedar lend complexity. More than anything else, though, I am blown away by how utterly delicious the 2015 is. Of course, the 2015 will be better in time, but its pedigree is plainly evident today. Roberto Conterno gave the 2015 just five years in cask, the shortest time in wood for any Monfortino in recent memory, maybe ever. Like most producers around the world, Conterno is thinking deeply about what the optimal period of time in oak is. As for the 2015, it is a flat-out stunner in every way.
