Piedmont (or Piemonte in Italian) is one of the most popular Italian wine regions and is located in the northwest corner of Italy in the foothills of the Alps.

The red Nebbiolo grape is king in the hilly region called Langhe. The famed wines of Barolo and Barbaresco are made totally from Nebbiolo. The grape creates a sneaky combination of finesse and power; aromatic, delicate aromas of rose petals, yet with distinctly muscular palate-staining tannins. Other red wines produced in the region are usually made from the Barbera and Dolcetto grape.

Currently some of the most popular wines of Italy with many consumers are sweet ones named after the area called Asti. "Asti Spumante" is made by the charmat method of production in which the wines undergo secondary fermentation in tank and then are bottled under pressure. They wines typically use a Champagne-style cork enclosure. Moscato d'Asti also is produced in this region and is made in a frizzante or slightly-sparkling style.

The dry white wines of Piedmont are typically made from Arneis or Cortese. Some wines made with Cortese are often labeled "Gavi" after the area in Piedmont in which they are made.

  1. Mauro Molino Langhe Nebbiolo

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59192

    JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Coming from the rose clone, grown entirely in the sandy and calcareous soils of the Roero region, the 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo is pale ruby and offers a fresh perfume of ripe strawberries, spice, and pressed red flowers. It is medium-bodied, with fine tannins, and its fruit and violet florality coax through the palate along with fresh apricot. Elegant and approachable, it maintains the essence of Nebbiolo without the austerity. I personally enjoy this as a youthful drinking wine for over the next 5 years or so. (Audrey Frick)

The 2021 Dogliani Papà Celso is packed with the essence of blueberry jam, incense, licorice, tobacco, chocolate and scorched earth. Inky and opulent to the core, the 2021 is once again one of the most heady, exotic wines in Dogliani, a true original. Give the potent tannins a year or two to soften. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2013 Ghemme Collis Breclamae is fabulous. Deep, dark and also translucent, the 2013 possesses magnificent clarity as well as structure. Black cherry, lavender, truffle, mint, spice and new leather all develop in an ample, resonant Ghemme that hits all the right notes. A rich, substantial finish rounds things out in style. The 2013 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the pedigree to develop in the cellar for many years to come. Each time I come back to the 2013 it is more impressive.

  5. Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#54236

    VN98+98+ pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is an eternal wine that will need 10-15 years in bottle to truly come around. Sorì San Lorenzo is often a big, virile wine. There is plenty of heft to the 2016, but at the same time, I also find an element of refinement and nuance that Sorì San Lorenzo has rarely, if ever, shown. Black cherry, cloves, menthol, licorice, gravel and incense are some of the many aromas and flavor that meld together in this dramatic and dramatically beautiful Barbaresco from the Gaja family. The Sorì San Lorenzo just explodes on the finish, with an array of aromas, flavors and textures that will leave readers weak at the knees. The 2016 is an outrageously beautiful, vivid wine of real gravitas and power.
    RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Aug 2019
If the Barbaresco Costa Russi expresses itself with purity and grace, the 2016 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo struts out stacked and tall. It has firmer textural support and is not as timid or as withholding as the Costa Russi. The Sorì San Lorenzo site is located closest to the warm air currents that travel down the Tanaro River valley, and this vineyard site is always the first to ripen and be harvested. You get a stronger mineral note here with iron rust, pencil shaving and potting soil intertwined with the primary fruit, showing dazzlingly intricate complexity and depth. This vineyard site suffered in the 2017 vintage from some hail damage that hit on July 19. The quality of fruit is expected to be good, Gaia Gaja tells me, but yields will be reduced next year.
    SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
Features sweet ripe cherry, plum, eucalyptus, tobacco and spice flavors. The texture is tightly woven and refined, while vibrant acidity drives the long finish. Shows wonderful harmony and the potential for aging. Best from 2023 through 2045. 175 cases imported.

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59966

    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Coming from Verduno, the 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is nuanced with spices and floral elegance and is pure and ripe with raspberry liqueur, rose petal, peppercorn, and cedar. This medium-bodied red is svelte and refined while having good concentration and drive, with notes of pomegranate, orange zest, and dusty earth. Zesty and lifted, this will take another couple of years to open and mature into the graceful wine it is destined to become. Drink 2025–2040. (Audrey Frick)

  7. Sandrone Le Vigne Barolo

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#50513

    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
Luciano Sandrone expected this would be a beautiful year for Nebbiolo, with fruit showing the qualities of an important wine all throughout the growing season and right up to harvest. And yes, the 2015 Barolo le Vigne did turn out to be a great vintage, with a full aromatic array of perfumed rose, lavender and violet. For all of its generosity and expressiveness, with just a beautiful bouquet that sings out a seductive mezzo-soprano aria, be forewarned that in the mouth this is followed by rigidity and nervousness. That explosive bouquet might mislead you into thinking this is a rather evolved wine, but you certainly feel its youth on the palate. To be frank, this was an easy year to make wine, and it’s not a big surprise that this edition of le Vigne turned out to be as classic and as good as it is. It should get even better with time.
    VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
The 2015 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of pure and extreme grace. Silky and nuanced on the palate, with tremendous character, the 2015 is all class. Rose petal, mint and sweet red berry fruit are laced together in this super-expressive Barolo. Medium in body, with radiant fruit and brisk tannins, the 2015 Le Vigne is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. Today, the 2015 is decidedly reticent. I have seen Le Vigne open up with time in bottle. I imagine that will be the case here as well, although the wine is quite closed down at this stage. Vineyard sources are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.

The 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà-Bas is impressive. Dark and resonant in the glass, with terrific depth, the Rabajà-Bas is a deeply intriguing wine. Black cherry, licorice, smoke, tobacco and dark spice bring out the more virile side of Nebbiolo. A Barbaresco of breadth and power, the 2017 is so expressive today.

  9. Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barbera D’Alba

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#59662

    JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
From Verduno and Roddi and aged only in large cask to keep the freshness of the Barbera, the 2021 Barbera D’Alba is charming, with a sweet perfume of candied flowers and blackberries. Medium-bodied, with a silky texture, ripe plum fruit, and fresh acidity, it also has a great finish. Balanced and harmonious, this is a lovely Barbera—I would drink this. (Audrey Frick)
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
The 2021 Barbera d’Alba is bright, effusive and charming. Crushed flowers, vibrant red-toned fruit, spice and mocha are all amplified in this joyous, youthfully exuberant Barbera. Medium in body and exuberant, the Barbera is an absolute delight. Vineyard sites are in Verduno and Roddi. Aging is in cask. The Barbera is often one of my favorite wines in this range, as it is again in 2021. (Antonio Galloni)

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#58604

    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
Lovely Nebbiolo aromas of rose, violet, red berry and botanical herb shape the fragrant nose. Smooth and savory, the elegant palate features juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry and cake spice alongside polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. It’s already drinking beautifully but also promises years of pleasure. Enjoy through 2030. (Kerin O’Keefe)
    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
This wine consistently delivers one of the greatest values to be found in Italian wine. The G.D. Vajra 2018 Barolo Albe has all its cards in play as an immediately enjoyable and extremely food-friendly Nebbiolo. This really is the top of the category in that sense. With straightforward winemaking (fermentation is in steel and aging in large Slavonian oak casks), the wine offers bold cherry, wild plum and plenty of fragrant blue flower and violet. This vintage has the added benefit of softly textured richness. (Monica Larner)
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
A taut, sinewy red, this keeps cherry, strawberry, floral and underbrush flavors under a wrap of tannins for now. Overall, the components are well-proportioned, and this ends with complexity, harmony and length. Best from 2024 through 2036. 3,417 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Aromas of ripe raspberries and dark spice follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate, with some fine, fruit and spice-coated tannin and a medium finish that firms up at the end. Sustainable. Give this a year or two. Best from 2024.
    WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22
This is the estate’s entry-level Barolo, but, according to Giuseppe Vaira, the family never views it as a leftover wine. They harvest nebbiolo from younger vines in the same three high-elevation vineyards each year, although those vines now average 30 years of age. The wine shows classic notes of tar and licorice, with smooth tannins and ripe dark-fruit flavors that make it approachable in its youth.

  12. Gaja Sorì Tildin

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#54322

    VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a fabulous, incredibly complete wine that soars out of the glass with explosive structure and vertical lift. The tannins are very much present, but also matched beautifully by the wine’s aromatic intensity and overall drive. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, plum and mocha add darker shades of nuance. In 2016, Sorì Tildìn is a bit more brooding and bigger than it often is, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. It is quite simply a majestic wine of real grandeur and total class, but it is not obvious. Sorì Tildìn will appeal most to readers who understand what the truest essence of Nebbiolo is all about. In a word: magnificent!
    JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - November 5, 2019
Coming from a warmer, south-facing site, the 2016 Barbaresco Sori Tildin is a more concentrated, vibrant wine compared to the straight Barbaresco and has vivid notes of bright cherry fruits, rose petals, road tar, violets and even a hint of orange blossom. Incredible on the palate, with medium to full body, an incredible, seamless texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a monster finish. The tannins here are unquestionably on another level and are perfectly ripe, and this just about off-the-charts 2016 has a Grand Cru Red Burgundy-like texture, elegance, and stature. This bottle didn’t hit prime time until the second day, so either give bottles a healthy decant or, even better, 5–7 years in a cold cellar. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Aug 2019
Here’s a wonderfully spicy and opulent rendition of Nebbiolo and another very full and rich Barbaresco from Gaja. The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is open, more concentrated and structured. There are pretty floral notes of rose hip or wild rose in this generous wine of broad scope. We’re talking about smaller fruit here, with plums, cassis, blackberry and plenty of power. Everything came to perfect maturity in this 2016 vintage, representing that rare merge of quantity and quality. This is what you get from the dense soils of the warm, south-facing Sorì Tildìn site and similar ones where the terrain can keep the moisture locked in. The 2016 growing season was also marked by sharp diurnal shifts, and rainfall was well-timed to occur when it was needed most.
    JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Extremely perfumed aromas of dried flowers, dried strawberries and pumice, as well as tar, following through to a full body, with chewy and polished tannins and a long, juicy finish. Quite broad tannins. Dusty texture. Drink after 2021.
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
Supple and concentrated, delivering cherry, strawberry, iron, tobacco and loamy earth flavors. Gets silkier and more graceful, playing out on the long finish. Shows excellent harmony and complexity. Best from 2022 through 2040. 175 cases imported.
    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 1/1/2020
Red berry, exotic spice and a whiff of camphor form the enticing nose. Firmly structured but loaded with finesse, the linear palate delivers crunchy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and white pepper alongside tightly knit, noble tannins. It’s still youthfully austere but already impeccably balanced, with vibrant acidity. Drink 2023–2041.

  13. La Spinetta Barolo Campè

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#53461

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo Campè is superb. Dark, potent and powerful, the 2016 possesses tremendous intensity to match its dark, virile personality. More than anything else, in 2016 the Campè offers a captivating interplay of fruit and structure. The 2016 is not a shy wine; rather it is rich and hedonistic to the core, while maintaining a striking sense of translucence. Black cherry, chocolate, espresso, licorice and clove all build into the huge finish. In a word: Superb. In 2016 Giorgio Rivetti and his team made a Barolo with a sense of classicism I have never seen before to this degree in a La Spinetta wine.
    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Campè vineyard is above Garretti in Grinzane Cavour. La Spinetta’s 2016 Barolo Campè Vürsù draws its fruit from the upper part of the vineyard where the topsoils are shallow and the vines are oldest, aged 70+ years. Fruit comes from a three-hectare site with beautiful southern exposures. This beautiful wine opens to a velvety and dark appearance with dark garnet highlights. To the nose, it produces dark primary fruit with dried blackberry and plum, but you also get savory notes of spice, tar and dried licorice root. The wine shows a firm backbone, but the tannins are nicely tucked into the greater fiber and power of the mouthfeel. Production is 9,000 bottles.
    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
As always, this shows loads of dried flowers and dried peaches and persimmons; it’s a ripe and unique wine. A cascade of tannins follows, enveloping the mouth in chewy sensations from top to bottom, flanked in dried-berry flavors. Full-bodied and dense, but agile and inviting. Drink from 2026.

  15. Paolo Scavino Barolo Prapò

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#55056

    VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Prapò is yet another stellar wine in this range. Dark and brooding in the glass, the Prapò expresses all of the natural weight of this Serralunga cru, but with more overt fruit and a bit less tannic heft than is often the case. That should make the 2017 a real pleasure to drink, with just a handful of years in the cellar. Succulent black cherry, licorice, menthol, gravel and cured meats build into the heady finish.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
This is a bold and opulent wine that sources its fruit from Serralunga d’Alba. The Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Prapò delivers rich fruit weight, with plummy black fruit, blackcurrant, iron ore, spice and cured spice. The vines at this site were replanted in 2008 and the fruit shows depth and authenticity, thanks to their advancing age. You get lingering mineral tones of rust and iron that marry this wine to a sense of place. The finish is bold but moderate in length.
