Piedmont (or Piemonte in Italian) is one of the most popular Italian wine regions and is located in the northwest corner of Italy in the foothills of the Alps.

The red Nebbiolo grape is king in the hilly region called Langhe. The famed wines of Barolo and Barbaresco are made totally from Nebbiolo. The grape creates a sneaky combination of finesse and power; aromatic, delicate aromas of rose petals, yet with distinctly muscular palate-staining tannins. Other red wines produced in the region are usually made from the Barbera and Dolcetto grape.

Currently some of the most popular wines of Italy with many consumers are sweet ones named after the area called Asti. "Asti Spumante" is made by the charmat method of production in which the wines undergo secondary fermentation in tank and then are bottled under pressure. They wines typically use a Champagne-style cork enclosure. Moscato d'Asti also is produced in this region and is made in a frizzante or slightly-sparkling style.

The dry white wines of Piedmont are typically made from Arneis or Cortese. Some wines made with Cortese are often labeled "Gavi" after the area in Piedmont in which they are made.

  1. Oddero Barolo

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#60075

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo is a gorgeous wine and also a terrific introduction to this range. Medium in body, with captivating inner perfume, the 2019 is sensual and inviting right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, spice, lavender and rose petal appear later, adding layers of nuance. All the elements are impeccably balanced throughout. What a total delight this is. (Antonio Galloni)

  2. Oddero Barolo Brunate

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#58309

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
Always a standout wine, the Oddero 2018 Barolo Brunate is a complete wine, and I use that word specifically because it shows balance, freshness, length and structure. It has all the basics of an age-worthy Nebbiolo that promises to increase in complexity and depth with more cellar age. At this young stage, the bouquet is singing with dark fruit, cherry, spice and sweet earth. (Monica Larner)
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
What a delight it is to taste Oddero’s 2018 Barolo Brunate. A glorious wine, the Oddero Brunate is one of the very few wines in this vintage that possesses real mid-palate depth and notable textural intensity. It is the smallest production wine here. I imagine that the slightly smaller cask used for this wine was an advantage in giving the 2018 a bit of extra flesh that is missing in this vintage. What impresses me most about the 2018, though, is its freshness and the primary intensity of the fruit. Iron, smoke, tobacco, dried herbs, chalk and a whole range of savory accents develop over time, rounding things out in style. What a wine! (Antonio Galloni)
    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Pouring a jeweled ruby, the 2018 Barolo Brunate needs some air on opening before revealing significant depth and balance for this cooler and wet vintage, with notes of balsamic herbs, black raspberry, and mineral earth. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins, pure red cherry fruit fills the palate, and the wine has a long floral finish with rose petals and a stony texture. It is deserving of at least another year in the cellar. Drink 2024–2040. (Audrey Frick)
    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2022
Camphor, violet, oak-driven spice and woodland berry aromas shape the nose. Lithe and polished, the full-bodied palate offers ripe Morello cherry, coconut, vanilla and star anise set against fine-grained tannins that leave a drying close. (Kerin O’Keefe)

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#55592

    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc is another terrific release from this leading estate. In fact, this wine delivers a big step up in terms of intensity and clarity, with a seamless integration of dark fruit, spice, balsam herb and sweet cherry. It also shows enormous clarity and definition, thanks to subtle touches of limestone and mineral. This wine figures high on a list of the best Barolos made in 2017.
    VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another gorgeous wine in the line up from the Scavino family. Readers will find a Barolo that is more nuanced and less bombastic than in the past. Bric del Fiasc has plenty of power on its own, so this style works so well. Dried rose petal, mint, spice, kirsch and iron all blossom with a bit of coaxing. I can’t wait to see how it ages.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Aromatic, this red offers rose, plum, cherry, licorice, leather and spicy tobacco notes. Firm, yet surprisingly open and balanced at this stage. Remains fresh and long on the savory finish. Best from 2024 through 2038. 708 cases made, 75 cases imported.

  6. Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#55247

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Leather, vanilla and spice aromas are expressive, yet underneath there are subtle notes of rose, strawberry, cherry and iron. As this red evolves on the palate, it firms up, remaining harmonious and resonant through the lingering finish. Eucalyptus and wild herb elements emerge with air. Compelling. Best from 2025 through 2045. 500 cases made, 60 cases imported.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Showing resolve and determination, the Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Ravera (with fruit from Novello) offers more concentration and a much darker quality of fruit with blackberry and plum. Ravera gives us density and power and a generous display of dark spice with tobacco and toasted hazelnut. Despite that extra muscle and heft, I love how the tannins are so expertly integrated into the fruit.
    WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
Having bought a 6.75-acre Ravera plot in 2015, the Scavino family now owns vineyards in 20 different crus of Barolo; this one is their highest-elevation holding and the last to be harvested. The wine exhibits the freshness typical of Ravera even in warmer vintages. Notes of menthol amplify that freshness, as do the cool, mineral tannins that keep the ripe red- and black-cherry flavors taut and precise.

  7. Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59967

    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Aromatically more expressive and ripe with red flowers and fruits, the 2019 Barolo Ravera is more exuberant and open at this stage, with candied cherry, menthol, and sweet balsamic herbs. The palate takes a more savory and coiled stance at this youthful stage, with iron-rich earth, grenadine, and salted orange. Building tannins are in concert with a persistent spine of acidity that will need time to loosen its grip, but this is a fantastic wine to hold and drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)

  8. Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico Riserva Barbaresco

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#57671

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is especially broad and thick in texture. It feels generous to the senses, wrapping thickly over the palate with a pretty mix of firm tannins and soft fruit fiber. These elements help to increase both the volume and the persistence of this classic wine. There is some dryness on the finish (and 15% alcohol), and you also taste crushed mineral and stone. Production is 10,000 bottles. I give this wine an edge in terms of future aging potential.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the stand-outs in this range. It shows the piercing tannins typical of this site, and yet has more than enough fruit to balance those tannins, certainly moreso than wines like the Rabajà. This exposed site benefits from cooling winds from the north, clearly a benefit in 2017. Even in the early going, the balance here is terrific. In 2017, the Montefico is one of the clear stand outs in the range.

  9. Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello Riserva Barbaresco

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#57667

    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco’s portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind.

  10. Produttori del Barbaresco Pajè Barbaresco Riserva

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#54282

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
The 2016 Barbaresco Pajè opens with deeply pitched spice notes that are so alluring. Pliant and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2016 possesses tremendous density and brawn. Blue/purplish fruit, cloves, lavender and menthol infuse this rich, hedonistic Barbaresco with tons of character. The tannins are present, but they are nearly buried by the sheer density of the fruit. In a word: impressive.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè (with only 6,423 bottles released) shows contoured lines and elegant sharpness, with cherry and cassis that segue to smoke, tar and licorice. This wine is beautifully pristine and targeted in terms of its aromatic delivery. Nothing falls by the wayside. That neat, tucked-in personality also distinguishes the wine in terms of mouthfeel, with firm structure, tannins and taut fruit tension. Pajè shows exceptionally well in this vintage. The Basso and Giordano family vineyards supply the fruit in this Riserva.

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is a fine choice for readers who enjoy wines of freshness, verve and energy. Dark fruit, menthol, spice, pine and crushed rocks are beautifully delineated. This is an especially chiseled wine in the range of 2017 Riservas. I very much like the balance of richness and vibrancy. In a word: classic.

  12. Roagna Barbaresco Gallina

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#56593

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2016 Barbaresco Gallina is a gorgeous wine full of the classic, youthful austerity that is such a signature of the house style. Deceptive in its light to medium-bodied feel, the Gallina offers up striking Nebbiolo aromatics redolent of crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint and rose petal. Nervy tannins lend energy and drive. The translucent beauty of Nebbiolo is so alluring. What a great start to this tasting.

  13. Roagna Barbaresco Pajé

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#56484

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Scents of rose, cherry and hay lead off, with cherry and raspberry fruit flavors taking center stage in this complex and structured red. Flourishes of white pepper, sun-kissed fields and tar add depth as the refined tannins take hold of the finish. Best from 2025 through 2043. 600 cases made.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
The 2016 Barbaresco Pajè is a wine of lean weight and meaningful dimension. It’s the kind of wine that unveils itself slowly with each swirl of the glass and requires ample time to open and ultimately age. At this young stage, it shows fine berry aromas with rose, lavender bud and rosemary sprig. There are some hints of elegant smoke and crushed stone at the back. (Monica Larner)
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2016 Barbaresco Pajè is one of the highlights in this range, as it offers gorgeous mid-palate depth with super-classic structure. Dark cherry, tobacco, licorice, leather and deeply-pitched spice accents infuse the 2016 with captivating nuance. The Pajè represents a bridge to the higher-end wines in this range. All of these wines have become pricey, but the Pajè is one of the larger-production wines and consistently delivers superb quality at a more approachable price than many of the other wines in the range. The 2016 is positively stellar.

    2004 / 750 ml. | Item#26455

    SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 15, 2008
Offers aromas of blackberry, licorice and tar. Intense and full-bodied, with a wonderful concentration of fruit, supersilky tannins and a complex finish of pure fruit and Indian spices. Superb for the vintage. Best after 2012.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Dec 2007
The 2004 Barolo La Serra reveals a generous personality in its dark red fruit with notable depth and richness that carries through to the persistent, sweet finish. With air, floral notes develop to round out this particularly multi-dimensional, full-bodied and beautiful La Serra. 2004 is a great vintage for this wine, which can sometimes be austere. Anticipated maturity: 2009–2022.

  15. Sandrone Le Vigne Barolo

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#56018

    WS9696 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
According to Luca Sandrone, his key to success in the hot and dry 2017 vintage was resisting the temptation to pick too early, before the grapes reached optimal phenolic ripeness. While some producers began picking in September, the Sandrone team waited until early October, when cooler temperatures refreshed the vines. Le Vigne, a blend of fruit from four communes (Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Novello and Serralunga d’Alba), indicates that the team’s timing was spot-on. The wine’s rich dark cherry flavors are laced with notes of licorice, carob and warm spice, the flavors gliding on smooth, polished tannins in a long, layered finish.
    VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Le Vigne is rich, pliant and so expressive. Even so, I imagine it will need a few years to open up fully. Bright red fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice give the 2017 its distinctly red-toned profile. Elegant and translucent, the 2017 is very nicely balanced. Vineyard sources are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.
