Port wines are heavy, luscious fortified wines that are densely layered with notes of raisin, spice, nut, and fruit flavors. Perfect as an after-dinner sipper, they also pair well with sweets such as pies and tarts. Though port wines originated in the Portuguese city of Oporto in the seventeenth century, today many countries produce sweet dessert wines called port. The two main categories are Tawny Ports, which have been aged in barrels and have notes of raisin and spice, and Ruby Ports, boasting a deep red coloring and bright, fruity notes. Port wines age well and make excellent gifts for weddings or birthdays. Using our website, you can read current reviews and ratings from respected wine publications and our accomplished staff to find the best port wine, one you can age in your wine cellar for a few years or one your can open on a special occasion.

  5. Fonseca Vintage Port

    2000 / 750 ml. | Item#16730

    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2002
Dense ruby/purple colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scale, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca’s standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006–2025.
    SP92+92–94 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 15, 2002
[Barrel tasting] Tightly wound and unyielding. Lots of plum and raisiny character. Full-bodied, medium-sweet and very, very velvety, with lots of fruit and round tannins. Good grip. Very harmonious for Fonseca.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2003
Voluptuous, warm and black, this wine follows a simple line even as it grows increasingly dynamic with air. The fruit is smooth and grapey, starting from a dark, stony scent of broken schist and then pouring out full and lithe. Smoky tannins, melding with the alcohol into a licorice ripeness, seem to brighten the finish, adding to the lift of the fruit. The natural simplicity of the balance should allow this to develop for decades.

    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 15, 2003
Amazing aromas of orange and lemon peel, with hints of toffee, caramel and honey. Full-bodied and luscious, with lots of sweet fruit and a long, subtle finish that goes on and on. A benchmark for 10-year-old tawnies. Drink now.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2012
A finely balanced wine that combines rich red fruit flavors with acidity, a slight tang from the spirit and a feeling of warmth and roundness. It finishes with an almond note and fresh acidity.

  13. Dow’s Old Tawny Port Aged 10 Years

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#10581

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2018
Solid, with hazelnut, fig, plum cake and dried cherry notes in lockstep from start to finish. A streak of hazelnut husk tilts to the drier side of the tawny spectrum, resulting in mouthwatering cut on the finish. Drink now. 12,000 cases made.
    WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - October 1, 2004
The light ruby cast to the color indicates the fruit that’s still apparent in this wine. Sweet and silky, its date flavors integrate well with the alcohol. This is a quiet, shimmering ten-year-old for flan.

    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2012
Refined, with bright flavors of dried berry, plum compote and cherry tart that are long and lush. Very creamy on the finish, which features chocolate mousse. Drink now. 6,000 cases imported.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2012
In the full Fonseca style, this aged tawny shows both rich fruit and a more serious wood-aged character. Good acidity follows the sweet initial taste, broadening into ripe flavors of nut, plum jelly, and a final crisp acidity.
