Among all of the fine French wines one could argue that for class, elegance and opulence, that the wines of Bordeaux are king. The only permitted red grape varieties in Bordeaux wine are some of the best known; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère used only in a minor blending role.

When one considers French white wine, examples in Bordeaux are typically made from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. One also cannot forget the sweet gold-colored dessert wines called Sauternes.

  2. Château Pichon Baron

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#51959

    JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - February 26, 2020
A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot aged 18 months in 80% new French oak, the 2017 Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron sports a vivid purple hue as well as gorgeous notes of creme de cassis and black raspberry fruits interwoven with classic Pauillac lead pencil, crushed rocks, chocolate, and violet notes. Full-bodied and concentrated, yet elegant and seamless, it has remarkable purity, flawless tannins, beautifully integrated acidity, and a great finish. It’s going to hit the early stages of prime drinking in 7–8 years and cruise for 20–25 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Mar 2020
Composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 80% new, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Pichon-Longueville Baron slips sensuously out of the glass with provocative cherry preserves, baked raspberries and fresh blackcurrants scents, leading to nuances of red roses, charcoal, tilled soil and cardamom plus a waft of forest floor. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant, refreshing and refined, with a compelling line of soft, grainy tannins and lots of perfumed accents, finishing fragrant. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2020
Well-built, featuring the pure, fresh core of currant and blackberry fruit that is the vintage’s hallmark, all backed by well-integrated tobacco, cast iron and roasted apple wood notes. Grippy, but with enough energy to keep bringing you back rather than tiring you out. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2024 through 2040. 13,916 cases made. (James Molesworth)
    VN94+94+ pts. - Vinous - Mar 2020
The 2017 Pichon-Baron has developed into a potent wine, even by its own standards. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, grilled herbs, licorice, new leather and spice all flesh out in a succulent Pauillac that shows the racier personality of the year. In the glass, Pichon is dark, racy and sumptuous as it so often is, with terrific density and explosive energy. Today, I see less of the aromatic brilliance the wine showed en primeur; perhaps that will come with time. The 2017 spent 18 months in 80% new oak.

    Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#60547

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2020 Pierre 1er is a very pretty, mid-weight Saint-Émilion. Ripe red-toned fruit, mocha, spice and rose petal are nicely amplified. Supple and forward, but not at all heavy, the Pierre 1er is an attractive, forward Saint-Émilion that will drink well right out of the gate. (Antonio Galloni)
    RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th May 2021
Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Pierre 1er comes barreling out of the glass with bold scents of baked blackberries, stewed black plums and mince pie, plus hints of menthol, black olives and charcoal. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruits, supported by finely grained tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and layered. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

  4. Château Rieussec, Sauternes

    2001 / 750 ml. | Item#39838

    SP100100 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 15, 2004
Like lemon curd on the nose, turning to honey and caramel. Full-bodied and very sweet, with fantastic concentration of ripe and botrytized fruit, yet balanced and refined. Electric acidity. Lasts for minutes on the palate. This is absolutely mind-blowing. This is the greatest young Sauternes I have ever tasted. Best after 2010. 12,500 cases made.
    RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2004
A monumental effort, the 2001 Rieussec boasts a light to medium gold color in addition to a fabulous perfume of honeysuckle, smoky oak, caramelized tropical fruits, creme brulee, and Grand Marnier. The wine is massive and full-bodied yet neither over the top nor heavy because of good acidity. With intense botrytis as well as a 70–75-second finish, this amazing Sauternes will be its apogee between 2010–2035.

  6. Château Tour Saint Christophe

    Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#58787

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2019 Tour Saint Christophe builds on the promise it showed from barrel. This sample was actually tasted at my home, where I afforded it a two-hour decant. It revealed precocious yet controlled blackberry and blueberry fruit scents, with that violet component still intact. The tannins have not lost any of their grippiness or assertiveness. This is a Saint-Émilion that is in for the long haul. Great potential. (Neal Martin)
    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022
This estate has been delivering the goods for numerous vintages now, and the 2019 Château Tour Saint Christophe is another terrific wine. Ripe black cherries, black raspberries, graphite, new leather, and chalky minerality all define the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a tight, straight, focused texture, ripe yet present tannins, and outstanding length. It doesn’t have the mid-palate density or opulence of the 2018, but it’s more pretty, focused, and straight on the palate. Give bottles 4–5 years and enjoy over the following two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Apr 2022
From clay-rich soils opposite Troplong Mondot in the commune Saint Christophe des Bardes, the 2019 Tour Saint Christophe offers up demonstrative aromas of cherries, wild berries, sweet loamy soil, licorice and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an enveloping core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, it’s a strong effort in a crowd-pleasing style. (William Kelley)

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57085

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Apr 2021
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Clémentin de Pape Clement strides confidently out of the glass with classic scents of ripe blackcurrants, juicy black plums and cedar chest, plus touches of graphite, bay leaves, unsmoked cigars and espresso. The medium-bodied, elegantly styled palate (13.5% alcohol) has a lot of grace and presence for a second wine, featuring finely grained tannins and seamless freshness to support the bright, black fruit flavors, finishing on a minerally note.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021
The 2018 Clémentin de Pape Clément is so expressive. Crushed rose petal, gravel, spice, tobacco and smoke all open in the glass. Medium in body, with striking aromatic presence and terrific persistence, the 2018 is just impeccable. The Clémentin is an understated wine with a ton of character. It’s a gorgeous second wine from Pape Clément and Bernard Magrez.

    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2018
The 2015 Clos Margalaine was superb from barrel, but is less impressive from bottle. Why? There is plenty of texture and depth, but my impression is that the 2015 may have spent too much time in oak and would have retained more freshness had it been bottled earlier. Even so, there is plenty of sumptuousness to the sweet red cherry, pomegranate, mint and rose petal flavors. The blend is 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted three times.

  9. Cos d’Estournel Saint-Estèphe

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#47402

    JS97+97–98 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, April 1, 2016
This shows what great selection did in the northern Mêdoc. Big surprise. Really excellent. Full body, chewy and rich tannins and loads of ripe fruit. Black currants, blueberries. It has hot and ripe tannins yet cool fruit.
    WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2018
While this wine is rich, it has a classical demeanor, with fine tannins that support but never dominate the ripe black fruits. Full of juicy acidity, it offers black currants and some fine, firm tannins at the end. This will take some time to mature, and the wine will not be ready to drink before 2027.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Feb 2018
The 2015 Cos d’Estournel is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23.5% Merlot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it offers up black currants, spice cake, warm cherries and plum preserves with touches of chargrill and forest floor. Medium-bodied and very firm with ripe, grainy tannins, it has a good core of earthy fruit, finishing with loads of layers and freshness.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2018
Easily one of the most successful wine in Saint Estèphe in 2015, Cos d’Estournel is just gorgeous. Elements of exoticism appear on the bouquet, followed by generous black cherry, smoke, leather, licorice, menthol and mocha. Naturally, it will be many years before the 2015 is ready to offer a truly complete drinking experience, but it is superb even in the early going. The 2015 was bottled in July 2017.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2018
This has a gently steeped core of currant, plum and black cherry fruit, infused with black tea, singed juniper and smoldering tobacco notes. The vintage’s overt austerity is less evident here, with a gloss of alluring toast adding polish to the finish. A strong effort. Best from 2020 through 2032. 15,000 cases made.

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#60247

    RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Apr 2022
The 2019 Cos d’Estournel has turned out brilliantly, exhibiting aromas of minty cassis, sweet wild berries and wild plums mingled with hints of spices, loamy soil and potpourri. Full-bodied, broad and enveloping, it’s polished and seamless, its ample chassis of fine, velvety tannin entirely concealed in its deep core of succulent, crunchy fruit. Beautifully integrated at this early stage, the last decade has witnessed a number of changes at this address, including a trend toward less aggressively late picking, cooler fermentations and élevage with fewer rackings and more moderate percentages of less heavily toasted new oak: in 2019, the results speak for themselves. (William Kelley)
    JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022
The Grand Vin 2019 Château Cos D’Estournel checks in as 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot coming from 43 hectoliters per hectare and hitting a healthy 14% alcohol. Brought up in just 55% new French oak, it’s a pretty, elegant, seamless Saint-Estèphe that has plenty of redcurrant and cassis-like fruit as well as lead pencil, graphite, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied, it has supple, fine tannins, wonderful purity, and a classy, regal profile that will be loved by staunch traditionalists out there. Exceedingly elegant and finesse-driven, with a touch of Château Lafite-like character, I compared this wine to a more elegant version of the 2016 from barrel, but now from bottle, I think 2014 is a better comparison in its weight, balance, and just overall style. It has a silky, charming style that already offers pleasure but won’t hit maturity for a good 7–8 years and will have 25+ years of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    Grand Cru Classé de Graves
    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#54986

    JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021
The 2018 Domaine De Chevalier is a beauty. Based on 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged 18 months in 35% new French oak, it has a beautiful sense of elegance and purity, which is very much in the style of the vintage as well as the domaine. Blackcurrants, black cherries, cold fireplace, damp earth, tobacco, and chocolate are just some of the nuances here, and this complex, medium to full-bodied 2018 has gorgeous tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. It has suppleness in its texture that allows it to offer pleasure even today, yet given its balance as well as purity, it deserves 5–7 years of bottle age and will keep for 30+ years. It is another brilliant wine from the team of Olivier Bernard. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, aged for approximately 18 months in oak barriques, 35% new, the 2018 Domaine de Chevalier has a deep garnet-purple color, pouncing out of the glass with energetic scents of crushed blackcurrants, fresh, juicy blackberries and ripe plums, with suggestions of crushed rocks, bay leaves, unsmoked cigars and lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with muscular black fruits, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and great tension, finishing long and mineral laced. Give it another 4 years in bottle to flesh out and drink it over the next 25+ years.

    VN94+94–96 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2020
The 2019 Domaine de la Solitude is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, lavender, dark spice, menthol, licorice and plum bring out somber shades of expression in this decidedly virile Pessac-Léognan. The potent tannins will require cellaring to soften, but there is so much to look forward to here. (Antonio Galloni)
    JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022
Moving to the red, the 2019 Domaine De La Solitude (Pessac-Léognan) reveals a ruby/plum color as well as textbook Graves notes of red and black cherries, damp earth, chocolate, and smoked tobacco. It’s rich, medium to full-bodied, has ripe, supple, yet building tannins, and a great finish. It’s beautifully done, and while I’d happily drink a bottle today, it will keep for upwards of two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022
The 2019 Echo De Lynch-Bages is the second wine of Château Lynch-Bages and it’s beautifully done, with a more floral, perfumed, pretty style compared to the Grand Vin, yet it still brings plenty of structure. Red and black currants, sappy flowers, tobacco leaf, and gravelly earth all define the bouquet, and it’s medium-bodied, has integrated acidity, gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. It’s beautifully balanced and already accessible, yet will nevertheless benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2019 Echo Lynch Bages is an absolutely joyous second wine. Ripe, plummy and wonderfully forward, the 2019 Echo is all pleasure. The signature of the house style comes through loud and clear. Hints of spice, tobacco and cedar round out the creamy, inviting finish.

  14. Grand Vin de Château Latour

    2002 / 750 ml. | Item#34297

    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2005
The wine of the vintage? There are only 10,000 cases of this extraordinarily rich, dense 2002 that is as powerful as the 2003 (even the alcohol levels are nearly the same, 12.85%). It is dark ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of English walnuts, crushed rocks, black currants, and forest floor, dense, full-bodied, and opulent, yet classic with spectacular aromatics, marvelous purity, and a full-bodied finish that lasts just over 50+ seconds. Huge richness and the sweetness of the tannin are somewhat deceptive as this wine seems set for a long life. Administrator Frederic Engerer seems to be more pleased with what Latour achieved in 2002 than in any other recent vintage. Hats off to him for an extraordinary accomplishment in a vintage that wouldn’t have been expected to produce the raw materials to achieve something at this level of quality. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2045.
    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2005
Loads of ripe currants, licorice and toasted oak on the nose. Subtle yet impressive. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and chewy tannins. Big and juicy. Deep midpalate for a 2002. This is the wine of the vintage. A solid, classic Latour that needs bottle age. Best after 2012.

  15. Grand Vin de Château Latour

    2010 / 750 ml. | Item#35714

    RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Feb 2013
One of the perfect wines of the vintage, Frederic Engerer challenged me when I tasted the 2010 Latour at the estate, asking, “If you rate the 2009 one hundred, then how can this not be higher?” Well, the scoring system stops at 100, (and has for 34 years), and will continue for as long as I continue to write about wine. Nevertheless, this blend of 90.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.5% Merlot, and .5% Petit Verdot hit 14.4% natural alcohol and represents a tiny 36% of their entire production. The pH is about 3.6, which is normal compared to the 3.8 pH of the 2009, that wine being slightly lower in alcohol, hence the combination that makes it more flamboyant and accessible. The 2010 is a liquid skyscraper in the mouth, building layers upon layers of extravagant, if not over-the-top richness with its hints of subtle charcoal, truffle, blackberry, cassis, espresso and notes of toast and graphite. Full-bodied, with wonderfully sweet tannin, it is a mind-boggling, prodigious achievement that should hit its prime in about 15 years, and last for 50 to 100.
    SP9999 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2013
Unbelievably pure, with distilled cassis and plum fruit that cuts a very precise path, while embers of anise, violet and black cherry confiture form a gorgeous backdrop. A bedrock of graphite structure should help this outlive other 2010s. Powerful, sleek and incredibly long. Not perfect, but very close. Best from 2020 through 2050.
    WE9999 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2013
Stern, almost severe initially, this great wine takes time to show its immense fruit power. Black currant and blackberry notes are packed into the wine, along with an impressive array of spices from new wood that gives a more exotic element. At the end, though, it has a fine, structured sense of proportion. Obviously for aging over decades, so don’t drink before 2022.
    ST96+96+? pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jul/Aug 2013
Dark ruby-red. Brooding nose hints at plum, cassis, brown spices and cedary oak. Sweet, fresh and highly concentrated, with brisk, intense cabernet sauvignon-dominated flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar and cocoa powder. Vibrant acidity gives this wine terrific lift and energy, but it's currently hard as nails. Finishes impressively long, with noble tannins and palate-staining concentration; nutmeg and licorice nuances emerge slowly with aeration. A knockout, but forget about it in your cellar for another 15 years. While I think the 2009 Latour has a magic spicy charm, the 2010 is more in keeping with this great estate’s DNA.
