Among all of the fine French wines one could argue that for class, elegance and opulence, that the wines of Bordeaux are king. The only permitted red grape varieties in Bordeaux wine are some of the best known; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère used only in a minor blending role.
When one considers French white wine, examples in Bordeaux are typically made from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. One also cannot forget the sweet gold-colored dessert wines called Sauternes.
JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - February 28, 2019 Incorporating 20% Cabernet Franc, the Merlot-dominated 2016 Château Barde Haut is one of the darker colored wines in the lineup. It offers a Grand Cru Burgundy-like purity and elegance as well as beautiful cassis and darker fruits, smoked earth, black cherries, and damp earth aromas and flavors. This medium to full-bodied, balanced, yet tight, backward, pure effort needs a solid 5–7 years of cellaring to round into form, but it’s beautifully balanced and packed with potential. (Jeb Dunnuck)JS93+93–94 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 4, 2017 Lots of blueberry and blackberry character here. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a savory finish. Should develop beautifully. Exciting young wine.VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2017 The 2016 Barde-Haut is a racy, voluptuous beauty. Mocha, espresso, plum, black cherry and smoke race across the palate in a dark, sumptuous Saint Émilion loaded with class and personality. This is an especially up-front style. With time in the glass, the wine gains brightness and precision to balance things out. The 2016 is easily one of the best recent versions of Barde-Haut I can remember tasting. Today, it is fabulously beautiful.RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2017 The 2016 Barde-Haut is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, vinified without SO2, matured around 80% in new 300-liter barrels from three cooperages and the remainder in one-year-old barrels. Hélène Garçin-Léveque told me that they are focusing on the elegance of their Saint Emilion estate and are picking a little earlier and practicing slightly less extraction. It has a really quite gorgeous bouquet with layers of ripe black plum and wild strawberry notes tinged with sloes. This has very fine delineation and focus. The palate is very well balanced with super-fine tannin, very well judged acidity and tension that lasts from start to finish. This is certainly one of the most feminine Barde-Haut wines that I have tasted from barrel, expressing more precision and finesse. It is an excellent follow-up to the 2015 Barde-Haut and may well surpass it in the long-term.SP91+91–94 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2017 Juicy, with good bramble and plum cake accents along the edges of the cherry, blueberry and raspberry preserve flavors. Judicious toast lets the fruit shine through the finish while keeping the energy up.
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, February 20, 2022 Beautiful and complex aromas of orange peel, fruit tea, hazelnuts and berries follow through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins and polished, refined tannins. Finesse with focus. Try after 2025.VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2019 Bel-Air has come together nicely. It’s racy personality is on display, but élevage seems to have tamed some of the overt intensity that was present in the early going. Inky dark fruit, new leather, kirsch and sweet spice infuse the 2019 with quite a bit of character. This ripe, forward Pomerol will drink well right out of the gate. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Mar 2020 The 2017 Capbern is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with aromas of baked blackberries, Morello cherries, cassis, fertile loam, unsmoked cigars and sautéed herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and grainy with a good black fruit core and red fruit sparks on the finish. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. The final blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 The 2017 Capbern was bottled at the end April 2019. The wine has a perfumed bouquet with black fruit and light marine aromas, and a touch of brine in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin, very classic in style and quintessentially Saint-Estèphe. Moderate in length, there is a slight rawness on the finish.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/11/2021 The 2018 Château Capbern checks in as a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, all of which was brought up in 60% new barrels. It has a deep, dark, earthy, classic Saint-Estèphe bouquet that gives up lots of cassis and almost blue fruits as well as ample chocolate, damp earth, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. With a full-bodied, rich, opulent mouthfeel, loads of sumptuous dark fruits, sweet tannins, and a great finish, this brilliant 2018 brings lots of fruit and opulence, yet stays weightless and balanced, with solid underlying structure. A hidden gem in the vintage, this is every bit as good as the 2016, and it’s going to shine for two decades or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Apr 2019 The 2018 Capbern is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot and comes in at 14.6% alcohol. It’s anticipated to age for 16 months in barriques, 60% new. Deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with vibrant scents of black raspberries, kirsch and fresh blackcurrants with nuances of cedar chest, pencil lead and forest floor plus a waft of lavender. Full-bodied, rich and packed with juicy fruit, it has a firm line of grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2018 Capbern was a wine where I expressed reservations in terms of a soupçon of sur-maturité and the alcohol level when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle, well, I still have those reservations. That is not to imply that it is a bad wine — far from it. There is a generous lift on the nose of blackberry, touches of blueberry and light violet aromas, and the palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins and plenty of graphite-infused black fruit. Yet I find the finish a bit wearing and rather monolithic vis-à-vis other vintages tasted. It feels like a bit of a blunt instrument and I much prefer the Marquis de Calon this year.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022 I love the nose on the 2019 Château Capbern, a medium to full-bodied, spicy, rich, tobacco and cedar pencil-filled beauty with ripe yet building tannins, a great mix of richness and freshness, and a blockbuster of a finish. It’s incredibly impressive, and while it offers pleasure even today, it deserves 5-6 years of bottle age, and I can’t imagine it not evolving for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Feb 2013 The 2010 is a more structured, restrained, less flamboyant version of the 2009. A final blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that hit 14.5% natural alcohol, this wine (which represents only 55% of the estate's production) is full-bodied, classic and built along the lines of the 2000 (although that wine was made before Reybier acquired the estate and upgraded quality significantly). This wine exhibits beautifully pure notes of creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, pen ink, graphite and hints of toast and vanillin. The wine is full and rich, and although aged in 80% new oak, the wood is a subtle background component. This beauty will take longer to round into shape than the dramatic and compelling 2009. Forget it for 5–8 years, and drink it over the following three-plus decades.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2013 An extremely well-sculpted, modern wine, with an enormous core of plum sauce, blackberry coulis and cassis fruit to match the ambitious roasted apple wood-, black tea- and tobacco-infused toast. Dense and chewy now, displaying the tannic spine of the vintage, this remains integrated, racy and incredibly long, offering a piercing chalky backbone that rivets everything together. Best from 2018 through 2038.WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2013 This is a complex and rich wine dominated by superripe fruit. It is a wine of extremes, of fruit, of dark tannins allied to some bitterness from the black chocolate extract. Ripe plums and sweet black fruits are given a lift at the end with bright acidity.ST94+94+? pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jul/Aug 2013 Full, bright ruby. Superripe but vibrant nose offers liqueur-like cassis, graphite, mocha and exotic oak scents; smells thick! Then plush, dense, large-scaled and seamless, offering extraordinary breadth and a 3-D texture to its dark fruit, graphite and mineral flavors. This very modern style of Cos finishes with outstanding, building, palate-saturating persistence and utterly sweet tannins.
SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2014 White peach, pineapple, white ginger, orange zest and green fig notes are clear and racy, while green almond, brioche, pear and yellow apple details wait in reserve. Offers stunning range and polish, showing terrific energy and cut on the finish. This just makes you feel special when you drink it. An estate that has been rising steadily for a while now. Best from 2016 through 2035. 2,915 cases made.RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Apr 2012 To be honest, I expected the 2011 Coutet to come rushing out of the blocks like Doisy-Daene; however it is not playing that game. Instead, it is almost Zen-like upon first acquaintance before revealing its life-affirming mineral aromas and traces of apricot and white peach that remain very subtle and yet tangibly there. The palate is medium-bodied with exceptional balance. There is a real sense of synergy between component parts; nothing out of place, everything focused and succinctly composed, with its trademark sense of thrilling tension on the finish. This is sheer class and a classic Coutet to add to the canon of great recent vintages. Drink 2014–2035.ST93+93–96 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jul/Aug 2012 Pale yellow-gold. Pure, high-toned aromas of apricot, honey, marzipan and sweet spices. A firm core of acidity and strong spice character give verve and definition to the very sweet apricot, peach nectar and marzipan flavors. This very racy and delineated wine boasts excellent intensity to its juicy flavors and finishes very long, rich and spicy, with smooth if assertive tannins. Very Barsac in style.
JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 6/14/2019 The 2016 Chateau D’Yquem is pure magic and dessert wines don’t get much better. Offering a pale gold color as well as a blockbuster bouquet of honeyed tangerines, tart apricots, liquid rocks, white flowers, and honeysuckle, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, an opulent texture, vibrant acidity, and again, an incredible sense of minerality, despite having no shortage of sweetness or richness. The 2016 is a classic blend of 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon that hit 14.2% alcohol with 135 grams of residual sugar. It’s already complex and approachable yet will keep for 3–4 decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)JS9999 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, December 3, 2019 A very classic Yquem. Breathtakingly wide spectrum of floral honey, exotic fruit (passion fruit, mango and pineapple), caramel and marzipan aromas. But none of this is a jot too much. In fact, the wine is extremely precise and finely nuanced. Wonderful freshness and textural complexity, in spite of the considerable concentration and extravagance. Very suave and sensual finish that goes on and on. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Mar 2019 Containing 135 grams per liter of residual sugar, the pale lemon-gold colored 2016 d’Yquem leaps from the glass with honeyed apricots, pineapple, green mango, crushed rocks, candied ginger, coriander seed and citrus peel with hints of orange blossom. The palate is very tightly wound, vibrant and refreshing with layer upon layer of minerals and spices, finishing with epic poise and persistence. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Apr 2022 From a 16-hectare vineyard on sandy soils on the plain, the 2019 Fonbel is a Merlot-dominant blend complemented by some Cabernet Sauvignon and, since 2004, Carmenère. Offering up aromas of blueberries, raspberries and loamy soil, it’s a medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent wine with delicate tannins and a supple, giving profile. Fully 70% is matured in tank to keep the fruit in the foreground.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 The 2019 Château de Fonbel has an attractive bouquet of raspberry, briary and light minty scents with just a touch of freshly rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied, quite cohesive and fleshy, delivering tobacco-tinged red fruit, moderate weight and a gentle grip toward the finish, which is lent a little sharpness by the 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2018 Deyrem Valentin is very perfumed on the nose, offering blackberry, blueberry, touches of violet petal and light incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a silky-smooth texture and a vibrant, minerally finish that lingers. This is a gorgeous, finely tuned and precise Margaux that is going to give 20 years of drinking pleasure.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2019 Deyrem Valentin has a lovely nose with crushed wild strawberry, raspberry and light rose petal scents. The Cabernet is expressive here. The palate is medium-bodied with white pepper-tinged red fruit, good grip and a lovely graphite note towards the finish that feels fleshy and generous. You could almost broach this now, but I’d prefer to afford it another 12 months in bottle. (Neal Martin)JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/11/2022 Well worth checking out, the 2019 Château Deyrem Valentin shows the lively, elegant style of the vintage. Giving up complex red and black fruits, lots of floral, sappy, cedary herb-like notes, soft tannins, and a good finish, it’s a pleasure-bent effort to drink over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
