The French wine region known as the Rhone straddles the Rhone river valley from just south of Lyon and ending 125 miles later just south of Avignon near the Mediterranean. There are well over 20 grape varieties used in the production of Rhone wines with each appellation having rules permitting the use of only certain grapes. The major red grape variety in Southern Rhone wines is Grenache followed by Syrah, Carignan, and Mourvedre. The major white grape varieties in white wines of the Rhone are Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier.
The major appellations (or AOC's) in the Southern Rhone wine region are: Cotes du Rhone (the lowest classification and allowed for use in all 171 communes in the Northern and Southern Rhone), Cotes du Rhone Villages, Cotes du Rhone Villages (with the name of the particular village placed after), Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vacqueyras, Rasteau, and Gigondas. Most of the red wines in the south are dominated by the Grenache grape. The sweet wines called Beaumes de Venise or Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, and dry rose; wines of Tavel should also be noted.
The major appellations (or AOC's) in the Northern Rhone are: Condrieu, Cornas, Cote-Rotie, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph. The major red grape variety in all Northern Rhone wines is Syrah.
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/25/2022 Looking at the Gigondas releases, the 2020 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes doesn’t give anything to the two single vineyard releases and offers awesome aromatics, full-bodied richness, a round, lush, yet pure mouthfeel, and ripe yet certainly present tannins. It’s loaded with Provençal, garrigue, and peppery goodness, and it’s going to be a brilliant value. This cuvée is an 80/20 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre raised all in foudre. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021 An 80-20 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2019 Cotes du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu Vieilles Vignes is an excellent option for consumers who don’t want to spend the extra money for the Saurel family’s Gigondas bottlings. The garrigue on the nose is a bit more subtle than normal this year, with the bulk of the aromatics being super ripe cherries and berries. Full-bodied and intense, with a helping of firm tannins that keep the jamminess in check, it finishes dusty and savory, with ample length. This is a big wine, yet one I suspect will mature relatively quickly; drink it over the next 5–6 years.JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020 The 2019 Plan De Dieu Vieilles Vignes has considerably more elegance and finesse compared to the richer, more opulent La Bouveau and gives up beautiful notes of black cherries, raspberries, flowers, and peppery garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, silky and just beautifully balanced, this is a no brainer Southern Rhône to enjoy over the coming 5–7 years as well. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2022 Dark and a bit reticent still, showing a very deep well of dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry puree flavors scored by roasted apple wood and licorice root notes. Features serious drive on the finish, with a tannic spine that easily shoulders the load of fruit, while a subtle mineral note peeks through. This is built for the cellar. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2038. 500 cases made, 50 cases imported. (James Molesworth)JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020 The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Spéciale is similarly deep purple hued and has a ripe, sexy style that’s very much in the vintage. Loads of black raspberries, Asian spices, candied flowers, and peppery garrigue give way to a full-bodied, concentrated, powerful wine with terrific balance, plenty of ripe and polished tannins, and a great finish. It’s a ripe, opulent wine that stays graceful and beautifully balanced. My money is on it benefiting from 4–5 years of bottle age, and it should have two decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020 Also pure Southern Rhône goodness, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes has classy notes of red and blue fruits, candied orange, flowers, peppery garrigue, and loads of Asian spices. JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2019 A big step up, the 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a remarkable effort offering gorgeous black raspberries, garrigue, spice, and floral aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, pure, and balanced, with beautiful depth of fruit, it’s up with the top wines in the vintage. This cuvée is 90% Grenache and the balance Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented with lots of stems, and aged in once- and twice-used barrels followed by a year in foudre. 625 cases. A lovely, unadorned expression of Gigondas best now–2030.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020 The 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is 80% Grenache, with the remaining 20% split equally between Mourvèdre and Syrah. Two-thirds of the fruit was undestemmed, and the wine matured in previously used barrels for 10 months, then in foudre. It’s a top-flight effort, with soaring aromas of herbal tea and red raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it’s silky in texture, with a long, vibrant finish that ends in a flurry of soft tannins.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 A dark, winey version, with black currant and black cherry paste flavors laced with tobacco, warm earth and singed apple wood notes.
