RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018 The 2017 Gigondas le Poste is just super: super purple, super concentrated and super tannic. Really intense, it’s not a wine for the shy, steamrollering along with dark fruit and powerful notes of licorice on the lengthy finish.VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020 Deep lurid ruby. Highly fragrant suggestions of ripe red berries, cherry preserves, exotic spices and candied flowers are accompanied by a smoky mineral element that builds steadily with air. Smooth and seamless on the palate, offering intense black raspberry, cherry cola, spicecake and candied lavender flavors that convey a suave mix of power and delicacy. Closes smooth, gently tannic and impressively long, leaving sappy red fruit and floral pastille notes behind.JD94+94–96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - September 26, 2018 More full-bodied, with incredible purity in its aromatics and fruit, the 2017 Gigondas Le Poste is another 100% Grenache cuvée that’s from a slightly higher elevation, terraced vineyard near the domaine. As with all the cuvées here, it’s not destemmed and is brought up mostly in used barrels. Offering lots of black currants, spice box, graphite, and licorice, it builds beautifully on the palate, has great concentration and intensity, and a blockbuster finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD93+93–95 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 Starting off the 2019 barrel samples, the 2019 Gigondas reveals a deeper ruby/plum color to go with a rich, powerful, medium to full-bodied and concentrated style that carries lots of classic dark fruits, ground pepper, and scorched earth-like aromas and flavors. This rich, dense 2019 will reward 3–5 years of bottle age and have two decades of prime drinking. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 Deep magenta. High-toned cherry and blackberry aromas show very good clarity with black pepper and smoky mineral accents. Shows firm tension and a spicy cut to its gently sweet red and dark berry, bitter chocolate and succulent herb flavors. Youthfully gripping tannins lend framework to a long, smoky finish that echoes the spice and floral notes. This is textbook Gigondas, raised in a combination of one-third concrete tanks and two-thirds large oak barrels, 20% of those new. (Josh Raynolds)JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/16/2023 Leading off the 2021 barrel samples, the 2021 Gigondas is a juicy, elegant, medium-bodied beauty with lots of red and black fruits, some floral and violet notes, fine tannins, and kiss of salinity on the finish. It’s clearly an outstanding wine in the making and a great effort in this more challenging vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 Bright ruby. Displays vibrant, sharply focused raspberry, cherry, potpourri and baking spice aromas, with hints of cola and succulent herbs. Shows fine delineation and spicy lift to its bitter cherry and red berry flavors, which become sweeter as the wine opens up. Echoes the floral and spice notes on a long, penetrating finish that’s framed by subtle, fine-grained tannins. (Josh Raynolds)JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/16/2023 As to the 2020s from bottle, these are all beautiful wines as well. The 2020 Gigondas Tradition Le Grand Montmirail has a round, supple, quintessential Gigondas style as well as notes of red and black fruits, Provençal garrigue, sandalwood, and leather. Medium-bodied, soft, and ready to go, it’s going to evolve nicely for 7–8 years, probably longer, although I see no need to delay gratification. The blend is 70% Grenache and 10% each of Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, aged 60% in vats and 40% in used demi-muids. As with all the wines here, it was completely destemmed. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020 Leading off the 2018s from bottle, the 2018 Gigondas Réserve is a mix of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, and can be thought of as the classic cuvée of the domaine. It’s beautifully done and shows the style of the domaine in its full-bodied, rich, yet also elegant profile. Offering a mix of red and black fruits, herbes de Provence, peppery garrigue, and flowers, this beauty is flawlessly balanced, has a round, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and just tons of character. Drink this little gem any time over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021 Although I reported differently last year, the final blend of the 2018 Gigondas is approximately 65% Grenache, with the rest a mix of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault (in descending order of preponderance). Gentle notes of bay leaf and thyme accent purple raspberries on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and generous, showing supple, silky tannins and surprisingly crisp acids on the finish.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2020 Fresh and lively, with a ripe core of dark cherry and blackberry fruit leading the way for dried garrigue, singed apple wood and dark licorice notes. Best from 2022 through 2032. 3,300 cases made, 200 cases imported.WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/20 Julian Brechet’s flagship wine is an assemblage from the varied terroirs on his 64 acres of vines. Fermented with ambient yeasts and 30 percent whole clusters, it’s juicy, salty, spicy and energetic, even as the flavors stretch out languorously under the textural weight of its alcohol. The fruit feels dewy and fresh, with a crisp pop of acidity to counter the gruffer aspects of the wine’s tannins — structural elements that will keep this well should you choose to cellar a case for the next ten years.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 Dark magenta. Vibrant cherry, raspberry and lavender aromas show excellent clarity and a spicy white pepper hint. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, it displays expansive red fruit and spicecake flavors with a subtle touch of candied licorice. Closes sappy and impressively long, with resonating floral and red fruit notes and gentle tannins that build slowly. (Josh Raynolds)JD91+91–93+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/25/2022 I always find the wines of Domaine du Cayron to be singular and exotic, and I love them, but admittedly, they’re not for everyone. Their 2020 Gigondas checks in as 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault and Mourvèdre that was destemmed and aged all in very old foudre. Cassis, blueberries, bay leaf, basil, and exotic flowers notes all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with wonderful purity of fruit and a notable sense of freshness. It’s a beautiful barrel sample from this family. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020 Also showing considerable elegance, the 2019 Gigondas Les Souteyrades sports a ruby/purple hue to go with beautiful and exotic notes of black raspberries, kirsch, candied orange, violets, and peppery garrigue. Beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, and downright silky on the palate, this heavenly Grenache should be snatched up by readers. It’s going to keep for 15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021 Not as effusive on the nose as the La Louisiane, the 2019 Gigondas les Souteyrades is drier, sterner stuff — not as immediately approachable, with more savory notes of black olives and earth. There are still notes of ripe plums and raspberries in this full-bodied effort but also a firm core of dusty tannins to ensure more than a decade of longevity. It’s a blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre from a clay-rich, north-facing slope.
JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/25/2022 The 2020 Gigondas Les Souteyrades is more structured, with notable acidity as well as tannins. Full-bodied aromas and flavors of blackberries, cassis, ground pepper, and violets give way to a rich, concentrated, focused Gigondas that’s going to benefit from a handful of years in the cellar. All of these 2020 barrel samples are brilliant. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021 The 2019 Gigondas Classique Vieilles Vignes shows a touch of cedary oak on the nose — nothing obtrusive, but enough to notice alongside the black cherries and subtle garrigue notes. Full-bodied and generous, with a smooth, silky feel on the palate, it ends with a gentle wash of dusty tannins and an attractive hint of licorice.JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020 Moving to the three Gigondas I was able to taste, the 2019 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes comes from a mix of terroirs on the lower plain, around the estate, and is mostly Grenache brought up in larger, very old foudre and concrete tanks. Deep purple/ruby hued, with a beautiful perfume of black raspberries, candied flowers, and sweet garrigue, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a silky texture, great tannins, and plenty of length on the finish. This is a more finesse-driven, silky, elegant wine than past vintages and it’s going to drink nicely for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/25/2022 Looking at the Gigondas releases, the 2020 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes doesn’t give anything to the two single vineyard releases and offers awesome aromatics, full-bodied richness, a round, lush, yet pure mouthfeel, and ripe yet certainly present tannins. It’s loaded with Provençal, garrigue, and peppery goodness, and it’s going to be a brilliant value. This cuvée is an 80/20 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre raised all in foudre. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2019 A big step up, the 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a remarkable effort offering gorgeous black raspberries, garrigue, spice, and floral aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, pure, and balanced, with beautiful depth of fruit, it’s up with the top wines in the vintage. This cuvée is 90% Grenache and the balance Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented with lots of stems, and aged in once- and twice-used barrels followed by a year in foudre. 625 cases. (Jeb Dunnuck)WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021 Spicy hits of clove, nutmeg and cinnamon entice on the nose of this full-bodied, luminous red. An invigorating blend of Grenache (80%), Mourvèdre (10%) and Syrah (10%), it offers youthful blackberry and plum flavors etched by hints of lavender, sage and bramble. A lovely, unadorned expression of Gigondas best now–2030.RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Sep 2020 The 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is 80% Grenache, with the remaining 20% split equally between Mourvèdre and Syrah. Two-thirds of the fruit was undestemmed, and the wine matured in previously used barrels for 10 months, then in foudre. It’s a top-flight effort, with soaring aromas of herbal tea and red raspberries. Medium to full-bodied, it’s silky in texture, with a long, vibrant finish that ends in a flurry of soft tannins.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 A dark, winey version, with black currant and black cherry paste flavors laced with tobacco, warm earth and singed apple wood notes. This has good energy through the finish, with a finishing kick of bramble and wood spice. Drink now through 2030. 750 cases made, 30 cases imported.
