Shop for Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer, a spicy white wine originally hailing from the German-speaking town of Tramin in Northern Italy, has been cultivated for centuries but is enjoying a surge in popularity in recent years. "Gewurz" is famous for its aromatic nose and spicy flavor notes, and some of the world's best examples of Gewurztraminer come from the French region of Alsace. Wine lovers flock to Gewurz for its classic fruit notes, and while the wine is often sweet-smelling to the nose, it's often a dry white wine on the palate.

Outside of Alsace, wine made from the Traminer grape is most prevalent in Germany, Austria, Canada, and right here in the United States. In fact, there are several fantastic Gewurztraminers produced in New York's Finger Lakes, just a stone's throw from us here at WineMadeEasy.com.

The 2020 Gewürztraminer is a bit off-dry (eight grams per liter of residual sugar, plus 6.5 of total acidity). It comes in with 14.1% alcohol. This was a few weeks from bottling and a month or so from release when tasted. Yum. This impeccably balanced Gewürz uses its sugar just right, balancing the bitterness and giving the grape a friendly demeanor. It never tastes sweet. It has good concentration and the bit of spice you want if you are a fan of the grape, without hitting you over the head too much. In other words, even those who are not big fans of the style can enjoy it. It adds the classic aromatics. It tastes great and it will drink well young. Holding it a long time probably will not be the best idea, but it certainly has the stuffing and structure to hold well for a few years. (Mark Squires)
