The wines of Australia are considered “new world” wines. They don’t have the history of France, Italy, or Spain which are many centuries old, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t carved out an important niche of their own.

One cannot think of Australian wine brands without thinking of Yellow Tail, Alice White, Jacob’s Creek, Rosemount, or Penfolds, whose esteemed Grange wine may year-in and year-out be the best and most important wine produced from the Shiraz grape in Australia.

Speaking of, the most important grape in Australian wine is indeed Shiraz, whose deep, plush, black and purple fruit flavors brought many wine consumers to buy their first wine from this country. Significant achievements have also been made in Australia with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Grenache, and even cooler-climate grapes like Riesling and Pinot Noir.

More than half of all Australian wine produced carries the label of South Australia or South Eastern Australia. The warm sub-regions of South Australia such as Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale are home to many red wines that get plenty of critical attention. Coonawarra, Padthaway and Eden Valley also have success with their red wine expressions while also having a slightly cooler climate to benefit the production of white wine varietals. Victoria and New South Wales are also significant regions, and wines from Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia are reaching North America more frequently.

  3. Mollydooker The Boxer Shiraz

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#56909

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
Black licorice, kirsch and Kalamata olive notes are dense and dark, but give way to plush blackberry, blueberry and Earl Grey tea accents. This harmonious version gains complexity on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 32,389 cases made, 11,826 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
The fruit this year was sourced from McLaren Vale 100%, and despite the warmer vintage, the 2020 The Boxer Shiraz is slightly lower in alcohol than the following 2021 (the product of a cooler vintage—go figure). Here, the 2020 Boxer is more balanced and settled, and whether that is due to an extra year in bottle or the regional sourcing for fruit (methinks a combo of the two), the wine is showing really well. This is a big volume wine—the biggest in the portfolio—but drinks better than that. The immaculate and highly organized winery, which I visited in June, may have something to do with that. RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Apr 2023
Tasted alongside the 2020, this 2021 The Maitre d’ Cabernet Sauvignon smells sweeter, more of blackberry pie than coulis. In the mouth, the wine is thick and plush, with black berries in profusion, rested upon a bed of creamy oak. It finishes with gentle inflections of crushed coffee grounds and dark chocolate. It is satisfying and super dense—that is the style, and it has been done well here. (Erin Larkin)

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#60356

    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
The fruit for the 2021 Two Left Feet Shiraz Merlot Cabernet is sourced from McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, and the cool season has imbued the fruit with a cool sense of restraint. There remains a leafy inflection from the Merlot, but the star here is the Shiraz, and the Cabernet tannins (interestingly, the least pronounced variety here) seem to wedge into all the cracks, filling the palate with structure. The American oak still underwrites the wine and contributes a bedrock of plush, sweet oak beneath the fruit. Balanced. (Erin Larkin)

  6. Penfolds RWT Bin 798

    Barossa Valley Shiraz
    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#59936

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2019
Offers a lush, juicy mix of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry flavors that appears seamless, integrating with notes of amaretto, clove and lavender. Plush, juicy and very generous on the long, expressive finish. Drink now through 2034. 1,156 cases imported.
    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 6, 2019
Stunning blueberries and mulberries here with a wealth of baking spices and red berries, as well as tarry notes and blackberries. It is all here. The palate has a super plush, rich and quite compressed tannin feel. Some firm and powerful moments, as the palate builds with plentiful spiced summer berries. Red plums and blackberries to close. Try from 2025.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Aug 2019
Red raspberries abound on the nose of the 2017 RWT Shiraz, which — as usual — is all Barossa fruit aged in French oak (70% new). It’s full-bodied and velvety, with appealing notes of dried spices, beef and plenty of red fruit. There’s a cedary veneer to this vintage, which looks as if it will need a couple of years to come together, then drink well for up to two decades.
    WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - February 1, 2020
Peter Gago, Penfolds’ Chief Winemaker, worked closely with John Duval in the 1990s on the development of RWT, their red wine trial using Grange-level fruit aged in French oak rather than American. The aging regime brings a luscious texture and caramel scent to this wine, contrasted by the black olive and dark blueberry savor of the fruit. The tannins last in black and green peppercorn spice, already bold and delicious with air, suited to long evolution in the cellar.

  7. R.L. Buller & Son Calliope Rare Liqueur Muscat

    NV / 375 ml. | Item#17057

    RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2002
Buller, who has long been a supplier of fortified wines to the big Yalumba Company, has begun bottling under his own label, and, luckily for Americans, they have been picked up by a USA importer. The Tokay Calliope and Muscat Calliope are pure perfection. Both are amber-colored nectars with extraordinary perfumes, incredible richness, and finishes that linger on the palate, seemingly forever. At $50, they are a steal. The average age for the Calliope offerings is around 50 years of age. Australia continues to be a treasure trove for fortified, after-dinner wines. Once bottled, they do not change, and often age up to a decade where well stored. After opening, most will last for a week. This is one of the top wine discoveries of this year’s tastings. Many consumers are going to be overjoyed with these offerings.
    WE9898 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2007
This is dark, almost black in color at the center, with greening evident at the rim. Syrupy, intense aromas of coffee and dark chocolate make an immediate impact on the nose, followed by syrupy, intense flavors of coffee and molasses. There’s mind-boggling concentration here, but just enough acidity to provide a sense of balance. Still, it’s hard to imagine drinking more than a couple of ounces of this at a time.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2002
A deep, burnished brown color and explosive aromas mark this as a serious dessert wine, and the rich coffee, cream, cherry, caramel and exotic spice flavors roll across the palate on a silky texture.
    ST9494 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Sep/Oct 2009
Deep, tawny color. Singed orange, cherry skin, toffee and marzipan on the nose. Broad, deeply concentrated burnt citrus and pit fruit flavors are complicated by brown sugar and orange peel, with exotic baking spice and floral qualities on the back end. This refuses to let go of the palate, finishing with excellent clarity, thrust and sticky persistence.

  8. R.L. Buller & Son Calliope Rutherglen Rare Tokay

    NV / 375 ml. | Item#17056

    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2010
With an equally very deep brown color, the NV Calliope Rare Tokay reveals aromas of walnut cake, toasted hazelnuts, black molasses, brown sugar and macerated sultanas. It has profound richness with a full, viscous texture and very high levels of sweetness plus a good amount of acid to balance. The finish is amazingly long and wonderfully spicy.
    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2011
Thick, dark brown and looking as much like molasses as wine. Buller’s Calliope Rare Tokay has a soy-like meatiness to it, a leathery note that adds complexity to its notes of treacle and rancio. Almost too sweet and syrupy, with an endless finish.

  9. R.L. Buller & Son Fine Tawny

    NV / 375 ml. | Item#16595

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Aug 2003
Rutherglen is ground zero for one of Australia’s great treasures, old fortified Muscats and Tokays (actually Muscadelle), and Buller’s offerings are brilliant examples of these wines. A knock-out, the medium garnet-colored non-vintage Premium Fine Tawny reveals smoky, spicy, nutty notes intermixed with caramel and marmalade characteristics. These Australian treasures are fabulous to drink at the end of a meal. Moreover, once opened, they will hold for several weeks, sometimes longer.
    ST9090 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Sep/Oct 2005
Bright amber. Fig, molasses and spice cake on the nose, with delicate notes of honey and coriander. Light on its feet, even delicate, with a transparency of candied apple and poached pear flavor. It would be difficult to find a better bargain than this in Victoria tawny.
    SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 15, 2004
Smooth, open and only lightly sweet, layering its smoky, spicy white pepper and cherry flavors in appropriate balance. Flavors finish with subtlety. Drink now.
    WE8686 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2007
Dark amber in color, this still shows its red-grape origins in vaguely berry-like scents and flavors. Hints of chocolate and caramel provide a sweet touch to this supple, medium-bodied fortified. Finishes peppery and warm.

  10. R.L. Buller & Son Victoria Tawny

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#16590

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2005
The Victoria Tawny exhibits a medium garnet color in addition to sweet, unctuous strawberry and cherry fruit. It is a blend of four grapes, Carina, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Shiraz. This blend represents the newest bottled offerings from this Rutherglen producer, an area that produces spectacular fortifieds, especially the Muscats and Tokays (actually Muscadelle). Its freshness, good acidity, soaring aromatics, and unctuous flavors must be tasted to be believed.
    ST8888 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Sep/Oct 2009
Faded red color. Cherry and red currant scents, with complicating notes of dried flowers and baking spices. Rich pit fruit and cherry flavors are firmed by tangy acidity and pick up a lush caramel quality on the back end. Very sweet but there’s ample acidity here to keep thins in focus. The finish repeats the spice notes and lingers with good persistence.
    SP8686 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 15, 2002
Dark and juicy, with distinct earthy-gamy overtones to the coffee- and spice-scented cherry flavors, finishing moderately sweet. Drink now.
    WE8585 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2007
More of a murky garnet than truly tawny, this inexpensive Port-style wine features chocolate, plum and prune flavors and a supple, silky mouthfeel.

  14. The Colonial Estate Exile

    2002 / 750 ml. | Item#23365

    RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Oct 2004
Produced from a dry-farmed, single vineyard of old vine Shiraz (some of which are 120 years old), the stunning, inky/purple-tinged 2002 Shiraz Exile was aged in 100% new French oak. A sweet nose of black fruits, flowers, melted licorice, and espresso roast precedes a wine of amazing concentration, compelling intensity, and a tremendous finish of more than 60 seconds. Although expensive, readers must take into consideration the age of the vines as well as the limited production. This exquisite Shiraz is approachable, but promises to hit its peak in 3–5 years, and last for two decades. Kudos to proprietor Jonathan Malthus for his work in the Barossa.
