Shop for Tempranillo

Tempranillo is the quintessential Spanish wine grape, and it thrives in some of the harshest climates of any wine producing region. It's used for most of the top Spanish wines from Rioja (where it's often blended with Grenache and other grapes) and Ribera del Duero (where it's usually bottled on its own), and also grown in other less-heralded wine regions in the country.

When you think of Tempranillo wines, think value. Many of the top-rated Spanish wines — made with Tempranillo — can be purchased for just a percentage of similarly-rated wines from other parts of the world.

Enjoy our huge selection of Tempranillo wines here at WineMadeEasy.com!

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, September 9, 2022
Blackberries, crushed stones and pressed flowers on the nose. Very perfumed. Medium-bodied with firm, lightly chewy tannins and a light dark-chocolate, bark and fresh-mushroom aftertaste. Vivid fruit. Crunchy. Fresh for such a hot year and so drinkable now. (James Suckling)
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022
Rich and minerally on the nose, showing earth and iron notes that serve as accents to the ripe black plum and cassis fruit on the palate, with hints of eucalyptus and cocoa. A bold red, with fine, dense tannins tightly meshed to the detailed flavor range and lively balsamic acidity. Best from 2024 through 2029. 10,000 cases made, 8,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Inky ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented dark fruits, pungent flowers and subtle oak spiciness on the perfumed nose. Smooth and fleshy on the palate, showing good heft as well as energy to the bitter cherry and blackberry flavors. Finishes long and spicy, with even tannins and bright closing lift.

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, September 9, 2022
I like the medium-velvety tannins with firmness, brightness and freshness. Full-bodied, racy and energetic. Elegance with structure. 85% tempranillo, 10% graciano and 5% mazuelo. Needs four to five years in the bottle, but already impressive to taste.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
A fresh red, with tobacco and smoke notes that are fragrant and savory as they waft through plumped cherry and milled pepper. Chalky tannins are a firm structural core, but this is well-integrated throughout. Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2029. 4,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

  4. Dominio del Águíla Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#60324

    RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2023
The youth, freshness, balance and harmony of the 2016 Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva is gobsmacking. The wine is a little shy, insinuating, reticent and a little closed, and it feels younger than it is. It comes from a collection of small plots of some of the oldest vines in the village of La Aguilera in the lieu-dit, or “paraje,” that names the wine, in a small valley surrounded by pine, holm and juniper trees, where there is a cold draft of air and the temperature is lower than in the rest of the village. The soils are sandy and intermixed with clay on a marl mother rock. The plants are mostly Tempranillo, but as they are very old vines, there’s always a field blend of other varieties—Albillo Mayor, Monastrell, Garnacha, Bobal and Cariñena—all fermented together with full clusters that were foot trodden in concrete vats and indigenous yeasts. Malolactic was in barrel and lasted for 11 months, while the élevage was extended to a total of 55 months (almost five years!). After all this time in barrels, the wine is not oaky at all; it’s floral and perfumed, elegant, nuanced and layered. The texture is silky, and it’s medium-bodied, with moderate ripeness, 14% alcohol and very good freshness denoted by a pH of 3.41. It has fine tannins that make it nicely textured and fine-boned, with subtle minerality. This should be veeeeeery long lived, as it has the stuffing, all the ingredients and the balance between them to make old bones. Amazing juice. 3,591 bottles and 51 magnums were filled in April 2021. 5. Dominio del Águila Pícaro del Águila Tinto

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#60323

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2023
The juicy, velvety and aromatic red 2020 Pícaro del Águila Tinto is fine-boned and quite faithfully represents what they want to express with this cuvée; it’s very tasty and has some chalkiness (perhaps through less ripeness than in years like 2018) with 14% alcohol and mellow acidity. The nose reveals some Côte-Rôtie-like notes of smoked meat and violets. 2020 delivered a good crop of healthy grapes that produced the finest wine to date for this bottling. This is superb, elegant and powerful, with everything in place (seems to be the signature of 2020) and perfectly integrated oak. 71,382 bottles and 1,979 magnums produced. It was bottled in September 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

  7. La Rioja Alta Viña Arana Gran Reserva

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#58608

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Brilliant ruby. Energetic, spice- and smoke-accented black raspberry and candied cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of rose oil, coconut and cured tobacco. Youthfully chewy and focused on entry, offering concentrated red and dark berry, cherry cola and candied licorice flavors that deepen steadily with air. Floral pastille and oak spice notes linger on the impressively long, smoke-tinged finish, which shows excellent clarity and polished tannins. (Josh Raynolds)
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The 2015 Viña Arana Gran Reserva, which was a Reserva until 2011, wants to showcase a new Gran Reserva style that combines freshness and joy with intensity, sophistication and aging potential through a blend of Tempranillo from Rodezno with 5% Graciano from Fuenmayor. The grapes were put through optical sorting and fermented in stainless steel for 19 days, and the wine matured in American oak barrels for three years with rackings every six months. This is the classical Haro style of Rioja Claret. They found that some special vintages of this wine behaved like a Gran Reserva, with a style that was closer to their 904. So, they wanted to make this consistent from vintage to vintage, a new a style of Gran Reserva, easier to understand than the 904 or 890. From 2012, the wine changes and they replaced the Mazuelo that was used in the past with Graciano, which they think is a grape very apt for Gran Reserva wines. I saw the wine with the 2015 vintage, a more developed nose with tertiary notes and some funkiness. They don’t want this to be the small brother of 904. It’s the entry level for Gran Reserva wines, for a younger generation; it’s fresher and less complex but with good aging potential. In a year when they don’t produce 904, the grapes would go to Viña Arana. The palate reveals quite a lot of tannin and a dry finish. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019. 2016 / 750 ml. | Item#59839

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, November 20, 2022
Savory and complex with dried orange peel, cedar and plenty of sweet spices, walnuts, caramel, dried mushrooms and pine needles. Shows maturity here, with a medium body and superb freshness. Incredibly long finish with lots of truffle and walnut. Lasts over a minute. Very complete now, but you can still hold it. (James Suckling)
    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The 2016 Viña Ardanza Reserva was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha that matured in used American oak barrels for three years, where it was hand-racked from barrel to barrel six times in the case of Tempranillo and five times for the Garnacha, as it had a slightly shorter élevage of 30 months. Against all odds, I found the 2016 to be fresher than the 2015 and less developed, despite the fact that winemaker Julio Sáenz told me he considers it a warmer year. But I have found many wines I like in 2016, and the wine feels very clean and quite harmonious, younger and less developed, with more primary notes and a velvety mouthfeel. 600,000 bottles produced. The wine was bottled in June 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

An intriguing red, with steeped raspberry, balsamico, dried black cherry, iron and iodine aromas and flavors. Silky on the palate and finely knit, this is a rich, medium-bodied red that offers supple tannins. A lovely example of Rioja in a more traditional style, this should open well in the decanter or with time in the cellar. Tempranillo and Garnacha. Lively and harmonious on the palate, this medium- to full-bodied version offers an appealing range of pureed black cherry and cassis, minerally iron and smoke, mocha and licorice notes. Silky in texture, with fine-grained tannins emerging on the lingering finish. Shows good focus throughout, yet is very accessible. Tempranillo and Graciano. 10. Macán Clásico

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57722

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2021
Their second wine in the Bordeaux sense is the 2018 Macán Clásico, which in the cooler and late year (they picked between October 2nd and 14th) fermented in stainless steel and matured in 50% new French oak barrels, 10% American oak barrel and 40% used ones for 12 months. The wine has moderate ripeness and alcohol (14%) in a fresher, subtler and more elegant year with good freshness (a pH of 3.75) and balance. It’s young and creamy, a baby that will improve as it burns down that fat. Separating the press wine by quality and aging it separately seems to have increased the precision. It has to be one of the finest vintages for this wine; it is round and nicely textured. It could be an improved version of the 2016. 151,411 bottles, 1,053 magnums and some larger formats were filled during August 2020.

Red-violet in the glass, this wine offers aromas of cassis and flint. Hearty tannins and a touch of smoke support flavors of blackberry, dark plum and anise with a touch of tar. A bright fruit note returns on the spicy finish. (Mike Desimone)

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#59587

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The flagship red 2018 Rioja Reserva was produced with a blend of 86% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 4% Mazuelo (a.k.a. Cariñena) and 2% Garnacha selected from their 300 hectares of vineyards that exemplifies the character of the vintage and the place. 2018 was a year with good rain and a cool season that resulted in a late harvest, which started on October 1 and was slow and delivered grapes with good freshness. Each variety and plot fermented separately in stainless steel. and the wines aged separately in American oak barrels for 21 months and then settled in concrete until bottling. It follows the path of the 2016, where I noticed a change that is taken further in this, controlling the power and increasing the freshness. It’s very aromatic, a year completely different from the 2017; it has less structure and more freshness and subtler balance and enough oomph, concentration and power neatly compensated by freshness. I believe 2018 was a very good vintage to implement this change. It’s perfumed, fresh, elegant and medium-bodied, with a velvety texture. Superb! 960,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, September 9, 2022
Savory cured-meat, tobacco and grilled-spice notes to the bright plum, red-date, cherry and green-olive aromas. Quite a juicy, medium-bodied Rioja with fresh and extremely silky tannins caressing the zesty orange and crunchy red-berry flavors. Nuanced, fluid and effortlessly drinkable. Long and extremely elegant. A vintage that highlights layering and freshness, rather than power and depth. 86% tempranillo, 8% graciano, 4% mazuelo and 2% garnacha. Delicious now, but will hold well.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022
Fresh and elegant, with a mouthful of ripe, crushed cherry and red currant fruit, this medium-bodied red is framed by crisp tannins and a minerally underpinning. Enticing hints of eucalyptus, dried fig and cigar box play on the finish. Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha Tinta. Drink now through 2028. 80,000 cases made, 14,000 cases imported. 2010 / 750 ml. | Item#35431

    ST9696 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Sep/Oct 2012
Opaque ruby. Sappy, seductive aromas of blackberry, blueberry, minerals, potpourri and sweet oak. Rich but vibrant, with incisive, highly complex flavors of black and blue fruits, candied violet, graphite and licorice, and a powerful mineral accent. The endless finish repeats the blue fruit note and clings with outstanding tenacity and focus.
    RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2012
The 2010 Pingus soars from the glass with copious dark cherry, blueberry, blackberry and crushed violet scents that are sensual and alluring. The palate is full-bodied and masculine. Indeed, having tasted this in March it seems to have tightened up in the three month to June. It is sturdy and powerful, with immense weight and presence and yet retains exquisite focus and poise. It builds in the mouth towards the persistent, crystalline blackberries, cassis and cedar-tinged finish that suggests this will be a seriously long-term Pingus. Drink 2018–2030.

The 2011 Pingus has a gorgeous, pure black cherry, cassis and blueberry scented bouquet interlaced by orange blossom and apricot. The oak is beautifully assimilated into the aromatic profile. The palate is full-bodied with a decadent entry. The tannins are ripe and rounded, imparting great tension and focus. There is both dimension and grace to this formidable Pingus that should blossom once it finishes its gestation. This is an outstanding Ribera del Duero wine. Drink 2020–2035+.

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#58672

    RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The unbottled sample of the 2020 PSI feels young, juicy, very fruit-driven and clean. 2020 was an unusual vintage, first of all because of COVID-19, but it was a year with lots of light, plenty of flowers and a beautiful spring. They were able to harvest quite early and finished two days before the abundant rains (except in Soria, which is a different story) that started on the 20th of September. In Ribera, there will be two different harvests: the wines before the rain and those from after. So, this is very healthy, aromatic and floral, with a spark of freshness but also ripe and round. It’s going to be a crowd-pleaser. It has a bright ruby color, with some 10% Garnacha. It somehow has less Tempranillo character. Volumes are similar to 2019, with around 350,000 bottles that they expect to bottle around June 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
