Zinfandel wine is one of the truly "American" wine sensations in the marketplace. Nowhere else in the world is the Zinfandel grape grown so extensively and with such success. And to narrow it down even further, the Zinfandel grape, which makes both Red Zinfandel and White Zinfandel wines, is grown primarily in California.
Red Zinfandel wine is typically bold in flavor, with a rich, lush texture, and typically high alcohol content. Among other things, Zinfandel pairs perfectly with barbecue (another American tradition).

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 21, 2020 A wine that always delivers, the 2018 Geyserville from Ridge comes all from a single vineyard in the Alexander Valley and checks in as 68% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 10% Petite Sirah, and the rest Alicante Bouschet. It has a big, cedary bouquet of red and black plums, sandalwood, potpourri, and Asian spices that develops and fills out nicely with time in the glass. This carries to a more medium-bodied Zinfandel that has wonderful purity of fruit, present yet ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. This structured yet ethereal example of this cuvée ranks with the finest vintages to date. Drink it any time over the coming 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2020 Robust yet brooding, with multilayered black plum, licorice and Asian five-spice powder flavors that build richness toward big, briary tannins. Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Best from 2022 through 2030. 10,500 cases made.

JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - May 21, 2020 From a site in the Russian River (mostly Papera Vineyard but 24% from Carlisle and 6% from Mancini), the 2018 Zinfandel Piner-Olivet Ranches sports a deep purple color as well as a pretty bouquet of spiced strawberries, blueberries, smoked earth, leafy herbs, candied orange, and violets. A juicy, elegant wine with medium to full body, bright acidity, and a seamless texture, drink this incredibly delicious Zinfandel over the coming 5–7 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 One of the stars in this range, the 2018 Zinfandel Piner-Olivet Ranches is a blend of several vineyards that is meant to capture this specific district within the Russian River Valley. In 2018, those sites are Papera, Carlisle and Mancini, a combination that works brilliantly. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender and menthol flesh out effortlessly, with bright acids that punctuate the finish.
WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2021 This very ripe and full-bodied wine offers an aroma of dried berries and a palate flooded with dried plums, raisins, woodsmoke and black pepper. Mild tannins and a rich, mouthfilling texture give it a broad feel.SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021 Easy-going and briary, with dried cherry and licorice flavors. Drink now. 2,704 cases made.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020 The 2018 Zinfandel Old Hill Vineyard is flat-out stunning. Deep, layered and super-expressive, the 2018 offers unreal complexity, much of which comes from the diversity of a field blend of about 14 varieties that includes good bits of Grenache, Mataro, Alicante and Carignane, among others. A wine of total understatement, the 2018 is not obvious, but it has so much going on for readers who can take some time with it. Old Hill is one of the most pedigreed sites in Sonoma Valley. Joel Peterson certainly got every bit of potential out of this fruit in 2018. What a wine!
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2018 Zinfandel Kirschenmann is a perfect example of what makes this vintage so appealing. Always a lighter, rather perfumed wine, the Kirschenmann has striking mid-palate sweetness and depth, both of which round the wine out beautifully. Ripe blueberry, mint and spice notes all run through this racy, expressive Zinfandel.
