WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022 Significantly tannic but also flavorful enough to pull it off, this full-bodied wine is a good candidate for further aging. It brims with black currant, graphite and black cherry flavors that are vivid but not overblown, achieving good balance and complexity. Aged for 18 months in 40% new Hungarian oak barrels, it should be best from 2026. (Jim Gordon)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - May 2022 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine to focus on in this range in 2018. Dark and brooding, the 2018 is such a classic Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet. It offers up copious black fruit, dried herbs, chocolate, lavender and underbrush, all in a super-classic, mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. This might very well be the best value in artisan, high-end California Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2022 Subtle aromas of dark cherry, toasted mahogany and roasted nut are very balanced on the nose of this bottling. The palate offers incense and potpourri flavors against a fresh red-fruit element. On the spicy, peppery finish, the leathery tannins continue their grip. (Matt Kettmann)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2023 Rich, with marzipan, cream soda and buttery pastry notes to complement marmalade and apricot preserves. Packs generous nutmeg-based spice flavors, with sleek acidity keeping all the elements in focus and balancing the candied accents. Drink now. 200,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023 A toasty, spicy aroma leads to ripe apple, pear and nutmeg flavors in this friendly, full-bodied wine. It offers a mouth-filling richness, persistent fruit and baking-spice flavors and a lingering finish. (Jim Gordon)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2019 Sleek and luxurious, with expressive Asian pear, strawberry blossom and roasted hazelnut flavors that build richness on an opulent finish. Drink now through 2020. 80,000 cases made.WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2015 The fruit flavors are apparent, fresh and lively in this medium-bodied, beautifully balanced brut. Light pear and pineapple aromas are followed by richer pear and citrus flavors, and subtle hints of baking spices, almonds and a nice earthy touch emerge.WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2014 Roederer Estate’s Brut is reliably open and delicious, this year’s cuvée bursting with concentrated apple flavor. It’s clean and dry with a long, delicate finish enhanced by the barrel-aged reserve wines that winemaker Arnaud Weyrich blends in. Its bold flavors and vinous texture would be great with cracked crab.ST8787 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2012 Light yellow. Pear, orange zest and smoky lees on the nose. Offers flavors of melon and fresh orchard fruits, with a honeyed nuance and a spicy overtone. Refreshingly dry and precise, with firm closing grip and lingering bitterness.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Evangelho Heritage Wine is rich, boisterous and super-expressive. Succulent black cherry, plum, licorice, spice and mocha are front and center. There’s real weight and density here, yet all the elements are so well balanced. The 2020 is dense and full of character. This year’s blend is mostly Zinfandel and Mataro.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020 The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. A rush of floral and spice notes leads into a core of racy purplish fruit. Lavender, sage, mint and a whole range of savory Cabernet aromatics play off the natural richness of the year so well. The 2017 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from Domaine Eden plus non-estate vineyards in Los Gatos and Saratoga, along with Merlot and Cabernet Franc from Mount Eden. That blend works so well. I loved it for its power and density. More importantly, the 2017 is a huge overachiever and a screaming value.WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2021 Dark and brooding aromas of black plum and elderberry meet with oak, mahogany and loamy soils on the nose of this bottling. The wine is extremely structured on the sip, with elements of chiseled graphite, lava rock and pencil shavings, as well as those dark fruits and spicy woods. Drink now through 2034.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2022 This powerful but well-balanced wine offers well-concentrated black-fruit flavors, moderate tannins and a full body. Black cherry, black olive and hints of pepper build on the palate and persist nicely on the finish. (Jim Gordon)
VN88+88–90 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2017 The 2016 The Bird Flora & Fauna Red, a blend of Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Grignolino and Freisa, five Piedmontese varieties one does not exactly see every day in California. Bold red cherry, tobacco, dried herb and anise flavors abound in this rustic, yet pleasing, everyday red.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022 A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Viognier, the 2019 Christo has a deep ruby-purple color and alluring scents of blueberry jam and cassis with accents of loamy earth, violet, coffee beans and iron. The full-bodied palate is powerful yet silky, with seamless acidity and gobs of pure violet perfume on the long, layered finish. It’s easy to drink now but offers a decade or more of cellaring potential. (Erin Brooks)
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021 The 2018 Gibson Block Syrah comes from very old vines interplanted with other varieties like Grenache, Trousseau Noir and Mission. They are dry-farmed, picked together and co-fermented. It has a deep ruby-purple color and deep, layered aromas of tar, earth, blackcurrant liqueur, cast iron and dried violets. The full-bodied palate bursts with juicy acidity, sparks of Luxardo cherry and a silky, rounded mouthfeel. It finishes very long and perfumed.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2018 Syrah Estate Gibson Block is positively stellar. These old, dry-farmed vines yield a Syrah that is intensely bold and savory. Dark blue/black fruit, tobacco, cedar, licorice, tobacco and dried flowers open with a bit of coaxing. Readers will find a heady, tannic Syrah built for aging. Time in the glass brings out notable finesse, but I would be in no rush here.
