  2. Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut

    NV / 187 ml. | Item#37564

    SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2011
This shows more finesse than many of its peers, displaying a subtle juiciness, joined by aromatic apricot, quince, mandarin orange and almond notes. Finely meshed with a lightly spiced finish. Drink now.
    RP8686 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st May 2011
The lineup begins with the Non-Vintage Cordon Negro made from the three traditional grape varieties of the Cava DO (Xarel-lo, Macabeu, and Parellada) with the emphasis on the latter for this bottling. It is made in a tasty, friendly style with a dosage of 9 grams making it just off-dry on the palate. It is a cleanly made sparkling wine that can be found in discount stores at well under the suggested retail price.
    WS8686 pts. - Wine & Spirits - August 1, 2014
Bold and juicy passion fruit scents combine with the flinty, rubber-meets-the-road reduction character typical of Cava. This is rich and round, finishing clean. Chill it for grilled calamares and other tapas.
    WE8585 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2011
Cidery on the nose, with a standard palate and mildly briney flavors of apple and other basic white fruits. Highly regular, with a decent finish. A quaffer or the type of Cava to mix with orange juice.

  3. La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 Selección Especial

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#60493

    JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
A perfumed nose of plums, mulberries, mushrooms, caramel, sweet tobacco and sweet spices. Full-bodied with velvety, fine tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and supple with a creamy texture. Delicate and precise with a long, polished finish. 90% tempranillo and 10% graciano. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
They used the words subtlety, elegance, finesse, delicacy and silk to define the 2015 Gran Reserva 904 Selección Especial, a blend of 90% Tempranillo from their vineyards in Villalba, Briñas and Rodezno with 10% Graciano from the Montecillo vineyard in Fuenmayor that was picked 23 days later than the Tempranillo. The grapes were sorted optically for the first time, and they fermented in stainless steel where the wine went through malolactic too. The wine was put in barrel in January 2016—used American oak barrels built by their own coopers—where it matured for four years, during which time it was racked every six months. 2015 was a healthy vintage with balanced ripeness that delivered wines with good aging potential. They thought the wine needed a little more time in bottle to polish those tannins and have decided to hold it and release the wine around March 2023; it will be marked Selección Especial, the first 904 to do so, as they have very high hopes for this year and believe it’s one of the finest vintages. They think it will develop the sophistication in the palate with a little more time and that is should achieve the silkiness that is the signature of 904. This is very 2015; I saw quite strong tannins in all the 2015 wines I tasted from Rioja Alta. There are some 150,000 bottles of this. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Vivid ruby. Expansive red and blue fruit preserve, tobacco, potpourri, spice and botanical herb aromas, with vanilla and smoky mineral notes emerging as the wine opens up. Sappy, penetrating and gently chewy on the palate, offering vibrant, mineral- and spice-accented black raspberry, bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. Shows sharp focus and floral lift on the impressively long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind notes of candied blue fruits and spicecake. (Josh Raynolds)
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2021
This elegant, sanguine red offers supple layers of dried cherry, sandalwood, vanilla and Kalamata olive, supported by smooth tannins. Hints of leather, tobacco, mineral and anise echo on the finish. A balanced, traditional style red. Drink now through 2031. 12,500 cases made, 3,200 cases imported. (Gillian Sciaretta)

One of the most reliable Cavas at the price, this offers cool, crisp cider apple flavors along with leesy notes of toast, nuts and flowers. It’s gentle and clean, fuel for a dance party.
    SP8686 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2013
Fresh and balanced, with a creamy bead supporting apple puree, pastry cream, anise and preserved lemon notes. Drink now. 75,570 cases imported.
    WE8686 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2013
Standard lemon-lime aromas open this quaffable Cava. In the mouth, it’s creamy and soft but not mushy, with candied mango, papaya and vanilla flavors that finish sweet.
    RP8585 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st May 2011
Segura Viudas’ entry level Cava, the Non-Vintage Brut Reserva offers up a pleasant perfume of yeast notes, biscuit, and green apple. It is a straightforward, lively, slightly off-dry bubbly that is a good value for drinking over the next 12–18 months.

The white fruit has a nervy minerality with green apple aromas and seashell chalkiness. Nicely saline on the palate with a medium body and a bone-dry, tangy finish with some seashells and peaches. Vegan. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)

  7. La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 890

    2005 / 750 ml. | Item#53423

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Shimmering garnet. Aromas of dried cherry, potpourri, vanilla, cigar box and exotic spices; a smoky mineral quality builds in the glass. Sweet, concentrated and seamless on the palate, offering cherry compote, red currant and rose pastille flavors that put on weight and pick up a spicy nuance on the back half. Conveys a suave blend of power and delicacy and closes sweet and gently tannic, with superb persistence and an echo of candied flowers and red fruits. This bottling and the 2001 are the only Selección Especial versions of the 890 Gran Reserva that have been produced by La Rioja Alta.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
I tasted the 2005 Gran Reserva 890 again, and I liked it better this time than in my previous review, even if I normally like the Gran Reserva 904 better than this bottling, as I find it better balanced. I tend to feel less energy in this wine, as it spends a very long time in barrel, six years in this case. 2005 was an excellent vintage, and they implemented some improvements in the harvest, introducing 350-kilo boxes and refrigerated transport to the winery, which they think provides better grapes and potentially better quality of the wines. The palate is medium-bodied, the tannins have mostly melted, and it has lively acidity that lift the wine up. This is a very classical and polished Rioja. 57,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2012.
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2018
Cedar and sandalwood aromas give way to flavors of tea, tobacco, dried cherry, forest floor and orange peel in this expressive red. Round on the palate, supported by muscular tannins and juicy acidity. Big but graceful, mature yet lively, in the traditional style. Drink now through 2030. 4,753 cases made.

Classic Rioja here with a refined and savory nose showing fine spices, new leather, iron, plums and orange peel. Elegant and very nuanced on the medium-bodied palate that shows fine tannins and juicy berry fruit. Long, reserved and bright in finish. Drink or hold.
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022
Fresh and balanced, this medium-bodied red offers plumped cherry fruit flavors accented by baking spices, iron and Earl Grey tea. Supple tannins lend a plush texture and firm the finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2025. 90,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

  10. Flor de Pingus

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#59671

    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jan 2023
There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there’ll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It’s harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins. 110,000 bottles were filled in July 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2023
Plush in texture and elegant overall, with a fresh spine of acidity enlivening black plum reduction and crushed black cherry fruit, violet and tobacco, vanilla and mineral accents as they wrap around a firm core of fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030. 9,000 cases made. (Alison Napjus)

  11. Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#58281

    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2022
The regional red 2020 Pétalos comes from 90 hectares of vineyards, mainly from Corullón and Villafranca del Bierzo and the districts of Viariz, Hornija, Valtuille de Abajo and Otero. It mixes expositions, altitudes and soils and wants to paint a picture of Bierzo in the warm 2020 vintage. They reckon it’s 92% Mencía with 5% other red grapes (Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne and Negreda) and 3% whites (Valenciana, Jerez and Godello) with an average yield of 26 hectoliters per hectare. The grapes were picked from August 28th to September 24th and fermented partly destemmed in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts for 43 days with a slow malolactic fermentation that lasted two months. The wine matured in barrel for around eight months (malolactic was fast, and the wines were put in barrel early) and was bottled unclarified, unfiltered and non-stabilized with cold. It has good ripeness with 14% alcohol (their upper limit) and moderate acidity at 4.6 grams (of tartaric acid). It’s a little more fruit-driven, a vintage of sun, jovial and juicy, approachable and round with very fine, slightly powdery tannins. The fruit is darker than in the 2019. This is still young, and, as it happens with even the most approachable wines from the region, it should be even better in a couple of years. I tasted it again in mid-December, and the wine is showing better and better; time in bottle has done it some good, and the wine has settled and is getting more balanced. I don’t feel the sun now; it’s harmonious and more serious, juicy and tasty. A little better than anticipated. They had 1,050 barrels that produced 263,000 bottles and 1,500 magnums. It was bottled in May 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, September 9, 2022
A rather dense expression here, with dark cherries and hints of lavender and oyster sauce to the slate, crushed blueberries, dark cherries and baked strawberries. Full-bodied and tannic, but silky and powdery. Long and tangy to the end. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better in 2024.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022
Offering a minerally underpinning and overtones of bramble, herbs and spice, this medium-bodied red is fresh and focused, with juicy black raspberry and black cherry fruit, olive and iron flavors. Bright and well-balanced, with light, chalky tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2027. 30,000 cases made. (Alison Napjus)

Fresh, with a long fleur de sel thread running from start to finish, accompanied by jicama and blanched almond notes. Piercing finish. Drink now. 10,000 cases made.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast -
Bright pale straw in color. Light-bodied with a sense of roundness in the mouth. Refreshing acidity. Sea salt and nut flavors, enhanced by a hint of lemon. Crisp and dry, elegant and fresh.
    WS8989 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2005
A salty, traditional but slightly richer than usual manzanilla, this tastes like being in Sanlucar de Barrameda. The freshness of the sea-side character is enriched by an almost buttery texture and the long nut-skin finish.

Blackberries, crushed stones and pressed flowers on the nose. Very perfumed. Medium-bodied with firm, lightly chewy tannins and a light dark-chocolate, bark and fresh-mushroom aftertaste. Vivid fruit. Crunchy. Fresh for such a hot year and so drinkable now. (James Suckling)
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2022
Rich and minerally on the nose, showing earth and iron notes that serve as accents to the ripe black plum and cassis fruit on the palate, with hints of eucalyptus and cocoa. A bold red, with fine, dense tannins tightly meshed to the detailed flavor range and lively balsamic acidity. Best from 2024 through 2029. 10,000 cases made, 8,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

  15. Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#53118

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 21, 2020
Rich and velvety, this red is big but gentle, with raspberry jam, cherry pie and vanilla flavors that caress the palate. Well-integrated tannins give subtle structure, while citrusy acidity keeps this fresh. Harmonious, in a ripe, fruit-centered style. Drink now through 2026. 5,000 cases made, 1,100 cases imported.
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
The pale and bright ruby colored 2018 Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria is really impressively aromatic, floral, open and expressive. It had a soft vinification in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barrels for four months, including malolactic. The palate is medium-bodied, the tannins are fine and the flavors clean and focused. The wine is tasty and impressive, elegant and really pleasant. At this price, it’s a real bargain. I just wish the élevage was a little more respectful with the varietal aromas, because it’s still a little oaky. Today, this is the finest wine in the portfolio, and one of the best I remember from Bodegas Aragonesas. 150,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)
