The 2021 Côtes Du Rhône Blanc offers lots of Viognier character in its apricot, flowers, ripe citrus, and dried herb-like aromatics. Medium-bodied on the palate, it’s fresh, focused, and one heck of a high-quality white to enjoy over the coming year or three. It’s a terrific white well worth seeking out. I’d drink bottles over the coming year or two, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it keep longer either. A gorgeous white, it has tons of crushed citrus, pear, ripe melon, honeyed flowers, and a chalky sense of minerality. JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021 One of the appellation’s top whites comes from Clos Saint Jean (although it’s their reds that get all the attention), the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc is brilliant, with a fresh, vibrant, focused style to go with classic crushed citrus, tart quince, and acacia flower-like notes. JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/3/2021 Even better, and flirting with perfection, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Prestige Blanc is 60% Roussanne and 20% each of Grenache Blanc and Clairette, aged in 50% new demi-muids. Truly sensational notes of tangerines, quince, white flowers, smoke, and crushed stone emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied, with a Grand Cru Burgundy-like sense of minerality, perfect balance, and a great finish. There are fewer than 200 cases produced, but this is world class in every way. It too will evolve for 20–25+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th May 2022 Count me a fan of Pegau’s 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvée Réservée, a tank-fermented and matured blend of 60% Clairette, 20% Grenache Blanc and 10% each Bourboulenc and Roussanne. Pressed direct to tank with no settling prior to fermentation, it’s medium to full-bodied yet has a deliciously plump, succulent texture and enchanting notes of white peaches, pineapple and tangerine, underscored by a hint of chalkiness on the lingering finish. JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/19/2020 Built for the long haul, the 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc is a majestic, noble white that could only come from this incredible, south-facing hillside in Hermitage. Revealing a light gold hue as well as notes of quince, honeyed minerality, toasted spices, orange marmalade, and spring flowers, this deep, rich, and full-bodied white has absorbed just about every trace of its oak élevage and has a concentrated, rich, yet focused and lengthy style. This cuvée had a more oaky, opulent style in the past, but today it comes across as a much more pure, elegant wine while not giving an inch with regard to density, texture, and concentration. As with just about every top Hermitage Blanc today, this offers plenty of immediate pleasure with its pure, fresh, mineral-laced style. Don’t discount how much pleasure these wines can offer in their youth and always ignore the “always too young” crowd. This 2018 is going to evolve gracefully and drink brilliantly for 5–7 years, then (maybe) go into a closed, almost oxidative stage, only to emerge after 5–7 years and evolve for decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022 The last time I saw the 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc, it came across as opulent and fruit-forward. Now that it’s in bottle (and scheduled to be released in February 2022), it’s less tropical, showing more restraint and (perhaps) greater aging potential. Hints of toasted grain, lime custard and scorched lemon zest appear on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is rich, delivering notes of toasted marshmallow and a heavily textured, slightly coarse texture, but finishes long.
