Blackberries, smoked earth, game, chocolate, and chalky minerality all emerge from this beauty, and it’s a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated effort that will evolve positively for 2–4 years and keep for a decade. Real nobility of texture here, along with a captivating sweetness and a repeating high-toned suggestion. Builds slowly and lingers long on the finish, with the firm but refined tannins fully supported by fruit. Classy juice, especially considering the sizable Merlot percentage. And more sweet than savory. Incidentally, my two samples of the 2017 Ciel du Cheval Red Wine were too volatile and porty to recommend; both finished with drying tannins.

The palate is seamless and soft, delivering rich red and dark fruit flavors alongside black licorice and a hint of menthol. While obviously dense, the core remains very fresh, delivering serious minerality and a lengthy finish. Brilliant to consume even now, this has a long way to go in the cellar.

Deeper ruby/purple, with blackberry fruits interwoven with lots of ground pepper, gravelly earth, and iron-laced aromatics, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. The balance here is spot on and it’s a classic, age-worthy Syrah from this estate. Give bottles 3–5 years and it’s going to evolve for over a decade. Densely packed, savory and fine-grained, with an impression of peppery vinosity lifting the middle palate. Superb intensity and flavor definition here, along with a subtle sweetness. The firm, rising back end shows strong black fruit and black olive flavors lifted by a soil-driven peppery element. This bottling stood out in 2016 for its intensity and light touch, and this 2017 is a worthy successor, finishing with resounding palate-staining length and grip. Ultimately, I’d have a hard time identifying this Syrah as a Washington wine owing to its sharp definition and light touch. A blend of 44% Cabernet Franc, 37% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is medium-bodied and shows impeccable balance with a clearly defined framework of fruit. The expression is velvety on the palate, with a delicate but persistent finish. It’s a beautiful wine!VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019 Bright, moderately saturated ruby-red. A faint note of musky reduction to the aromas of dark raspberry, flowers, mint and milk chocolate. Suave and smooth on entry, then easygoing and fine-grained in the mid-palate, with enticing floral lift to the moderately dense black and blue fruit and licorice flavors. I find this wine a bit more harmonious and filled in than the ’16 version, but then these vines are still very young (this ’17 was from just the fourth leaf). Suaver and longer than the 2016 release, with the tannins better supported by fruit. Not a sweet style, but this blend will give early pleasure. The Pollard wines are gently priced for serious Washington reds.

Beautiful crème de cassis, graphite, spice box, and lead pencil notes all flow to a full-bodied, soft, elegant wine that has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and a seamless texture. It shows the more upfront, charming style of the vintage and is already hard to resist. Nevertheless, it should easily evolve for 20+ years.
