This is a 1.2 hectare vineyard planted to 80-year-old vines at 550 meters above sea level. The soils here consist of a thin layer of volcanic lava that allows the roots to penetrate the sandy limestone below. This results in a softer wine with a round and plush mouthfeel. Bright berry nuances are followed by pressed rose petal and crushed stone. I would suggest a slightly shorter drinking window for Contrada C. Sharing lots of similarities to the Les Trois Sources (they come from similar terroirs), it has another level of concentration and density, with incredible liquid rock, blueberry, violets, licorice and bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. A rock star on the palate, it has full-bodied power, perfect balance, a seamless, elegant texture and blockbuster mid-palate depth. Coming from 100-year-old Grenache vines and pure sand soils, it’s a tour de force that will have two-plus decades of life.

Ripe, round, full-bodied and opulent, this is a wine that can be drunk now or cellared for another three decades. Interestingly, the alcohol levels are not all that high in any of these wines, with most of them rarely exceeding 14.3%.ST94+94–97 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2014 Deep ruby. Wonderfully pure aromas and flavors of crushed cassis, minerals and exotic spices. Huge, sweet and plush but utterly primary for a wine with so much flesh. Boasts the chocolatey richness of a topnotch Pomerol from a great year, but the wine’s huge, ripe tannins will require at least five or six years of aging. I imagine the 2012 will reward drinkers with a good 20 years or so of very fine drinking pleasure.

Bryant’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is quite pretty, but it should really be more than that. Cloves and cinnamon combine with balsamic spice, molten chocolate and medicinal blackberries as this blossoms in the glass. It floods the palate with racy, silky textures and an intense burst of ultra-ripe red and black fruits offset by a bitter twang of sour citrus and cocoa. Tantalizing acidity barely maintains balance yet ultimately succeeds. Exotic spices and dried black cherries saturate and are framed by a coating of fine tannins that promises decades of further evolution. This is a powerhouse. RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2013 Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from clone 4 on rootstock 3309, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Unnamed tastes like a young Pontet Canet. Its dense purple color is followed by a classic bouquet of creme de cassis, cedarwood, spring flowers and a hint of white chocolate. Full-bodied with stunning fruit intensity and purity as well as a long finish, this was all accessed from the Missouri Hopper vineyard owned by the Beckstoffer Family. Like most 2012s, this wine will be drinkable young, but it has the depth and balance to age for 20 years.

The 2012, from grapes harvested between October 2 and 17, has supple tannins and a nice mouthfeel that builds incrementally, offering up plenty of crème de cassis, plum and blackberry fruit. The wine is soft, round, opulently textured, and an undeniable success for 2012. The purity of fruit is also admirable. Drink this medium to full-bodied Pauillac over the next 20 years. This is significantly better than the barrel samples tasted in March, 2013.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2016 The 2012 Grand Puy Ducasse is bold, racy and supple, all qualities that are best appreciated sooner rather than later. There is plenty to admire in the wine’s giving, open-knit personality. Succulent red cherries, plums, mint and sweet spices round out the inviting finish. The 2012 is a bit two-dimensional, but it is nevertheless a solid effort for the year, not to mention quite appealing.

This medium-bodied effort is the poster child for elegance, finesse, balance and equilibrium. The Cantemerle of Pessac-Leognan? Its deep ruby/plum/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of black cherries, black currants, lead pencil shavings and a touch of spicy oak. This medium-bodied, pretty wine will benefit from 4–5 years of cellaring and last for two decades.

Firm yet well-integrated tannins give the wine much of its energy, tension and focus. Black cherry jam, graphite, smoke and tobacco add nuance as the wine opens up in the glass. Far from an easygoing 2012, the Helms is going to need time to fully come together. There is so much to look forward to here. This is the first vintage since 2008 that was vinified in wood uprights, as was originally intended. The intervening vintages have been much shorter, so they were done in barrel. Always 100% Grenache that comes from very old vines and sandy soils, it is one impressive tank sample. Give it a couple years in the cellar and enjoy bottles over the following decade or longer. This sexy Chateauneuf will likely be delicious soon after release, but it has the concentration to strongly suggest that patience will be rewarded.

Seeing the same elevage as the 2011, it sports an inky purple color as well as spectacular array of black and blue fruits, violets, liquid flowers and underbrush to go with an energetic, seamless and full-bodied profile on the palate. Lighter weight than the 2007 and 2010, it possesses notable freshness, purity and elegance. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and thrill for upward of two decades. Drink 2016–2032.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015 Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a smoky overtone and bright minerality. Pliant and seamless in the mouth, offering intense, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors that are energized by juicy acidity. Shows real power and focus on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of candied flowers. Finishes very long and smooth, with supple tannins, lingering spiciness and outstanding clarity.
