Its tannins show considerable aging potential. The tannins and the fruit strike a balance with dense, floral, purple-black flavors over crushed stone. That schisty grip of the tannin ends up feeling supple and curvaceous, defining the boundaries of the fruit rather than restricting it. The best vintage of Graham’s in recent memory, this 2003 should be drinking well from 2025 to 2046, and should live well beyond that.RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Nov 2005 Violets, roses, spices, and candied dark fruits emanate from the glass of the murky black/purple colored 2003 Graham Vintage Port. After four days of air, this wine’s aromatics sweetened further, displaying jammy blackberry and blueberry scents. Bold, full-bodied, and expansive, the Graham benefited the most from extensive contact with air of all the 2003s tasted for this report. This opulently jammy wine assaults the palate with powerful yet soft layers of oily, candied red fruits as well as notes of tar and hints of mocha. A highly concentrated effort, it is creamy textured, suave, and reveals an admirably long finish filled with additional layers of dark fruits intermingled with spices. Projected maturity: 2030–2055.ST9595 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2006 Deep, saturated ruby. Initially reticent aromas of dark chocolate and nuts; showed a high-pitched eucalyptus quality as it opened in the glass. Then almost shockingly huge and rich in fruit, with wonderfully lush, complex flavors of cassis, violet, minerals, spices, flowers and exotic chocolate. The tannins are seductively sweet, yet the finish boasts terrific focus, not to mention outstanding persistence. In terms of sheer palate-saturating flavor and texture, this runs a close second to Fonseca among these 2003s. For long aging.SP92+92–94 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2005 [Barrel tasting] This is big and juicy with loads of sweet and rich fruit as well as a racy tannin structure that impresses. Full-bodied, medium-sweet and long on the finish. I like this very much.
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/23 Alvaro Castro replanted his vines at Saes around the turn of the century, an east-facing vineyard in the foothills of the Serra da Estrella, where he and his daughter Maria grow touriga nacional, alfrocheiro, jaen and tinta pinheira for this blend. Fermented without added yeasts and aged in older oak barrels, this is among the most straightforward wines they make, and it showed beautifully in 2018: An elegant red with lovely richness, its melodramatic funk in control, its fruit in blossom—“red plum, violets and rose petals,” as panelist Bruno Almeida described it.RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2022 The 2018 Tinto Quinta de Saes is a blend of 30% each of Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro, plus 15% Tinta Roriz and 25% Jaen, aged for 18 months in more or less neutral French barriques. It comes in at 13% alcohol. This is from 28-year-old vines in Saes. Understated, elegant and expressive, this is a well-priced Tinto in the lineup that delivers some bang for the buck. Its main limitation is the structure. It’s built to drink now, not to age for a decade or more. That’s not to say it won’t hold nicely for several years, but this tastes great now and goes down easy. There won’t likely be any great reward to holding it a long time. In the meanwhile, it is serious and classic, not overly fruity or candied, like some at this end of the lineup can be. It should be a good choice for value in a restaurant. (Mark Squires)
