Pinot Noir, the grape behind Burgundy wine, is the ultimate food-pairing wine. Whether it be a hearty red meat dish or light seafood/pasta dish, chances are Pinot Noir will pair well with it. This also makes Pinot Noir wine one of the best red wines for gifting at dinner parties!
The Pinot Noir grape thrives in cooler climates such as those where it originated in Burgundy. Wine lovers appreciate its versatility - it's one of the few wines that's both approachable as a young wine and complex and delicious as it ages. The best red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes are typically found in Burgundy, California, and Oregon, but you'll find examples of this wine from all over the world.

VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2019 Glimmering red. Spice-accented red fruit and rose oil on the nose, along with notes of white pepper, allspice and musky earth. Juicy and focused in the mouth, offering bitter cherry and red berry flavors with a touch of medicinal bitterness. Turns sweeter with air and shows very good energy on the persistent finish, which is firmed by dusty, fine-grained tannins that fold smoothly into the wine’s fruit.Premier SelectPremier Select wines are handpicked by our staff from amongst thousands of wines for their exceptional quality. JD96+96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022 Looking at the Sta. Rita Hills releases, the 2020 Pinot Noir Seabiscuit Zotovich Vineyard has a complex bouquet of spiced red berry fruits as well as forest floor, loamy earth, baking spices, and some sea-like brine and iron nuances. Beautiful on the palate, it’s tight, structured, and focused, with medium to full-bodied richness, present tannins, and a great finish. It needs a year or two, but this is brilliant juice. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 The 2020 Pinot Noir Zotovich Vineyard Seabiscuit is terrific. It captures all the lift and savory intensity typical of this site but with the added fruit concentration and depth that are such Paul Lato signatures. Crushed rose petal, mint, dried herbs and red-fleshed fruit abound. This is one of the more restrained Pinots in the Lato portfolio, in relative terms. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 Shimmering garnet. Expansive aromas of fresh red fruits, botanical herbs and baking spices take on smoky mineral and floral overtones as the wine opens up. Juicy and precise in the mouth, offering alluringly sweet raspberry preserve, candied rose and spicecake flavors that convey depth as well as vivacity. Finishes on a juicy red fruit note, with silky, polished tannins and excellent, floral-driven persistence.
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019 The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Fonteny 1er Cru, which contains 40% whole bunch fruit, has a very detailed bouquet of crushed-stone-infused, minerally fruit; hints of incense and lavender emerge with time in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant right from the start, offering candied tart red fruit mixed with orange zest and citrus peel, wonderful definition and such vivacity on the finish that you will beg for another sip straight away. Might this surpass the Clos Saint-Jacques this year?
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichots 1er Cru has ample red cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose, touches of sous-bois and tobacco emerging with aeration. The palate is soft and fleshy, a fine bead of acidity, gaining depth towards the finish with a touch of black pepper lingering on the aftertaste. You could broach this now or drink over the next five years.
VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru is matured in 25% new oak. It has a very perfumed bouquet with pressed rose petals infusing the red berry fruit, hints of cranberry and bergamot emerging with time, fine mineralité too. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries, crushed strawberry and light orange zest notes, the acidity lending real bite and energy towards the finish. Bon vin! (Neal Martin)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Pinot Noir Chimera is a rich, heady wine. A burst of dark red cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal and blood orange are all dialed up. This bold, generous Pinot delivers the goods, big time. It’s a fabulous entry-level offering from Sean Capiaux, if that term can even be used here. The Chimera is mostly young vines from Starscape, with dollops from Widdoes, Pisoni and Garys’. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 The 2020 Fixin Village is complex on the nose considering this is a Village Cru: redcurrant, briary, sous-bois and light truffle scents. This is very fragrant. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a dab of sour cherry on the finish. Delightful. (Neal Martin)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 The 2019 Beaune Les Perrières 1er Cru comes from a mixture of vine ages, the oldest around 90 years old. It has an expressive, floral bouquet featuring touches of kirsch and orange blossom; this is one of the most opulent crus. The palate is well balanced with lively red berry fruit, the calcareous soils lending tension and linearity toward the almost Pommard-like finish.
VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru, which is two-thirds whole cluster, has a very focused bouquet of elegant red cherry, raspberry and briary aromas, plus a hint of bay leaf and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity thanks to the calcareous soils, and displays superb tension and focus toward the finish. A gorgeous, ethereal Aux Thorey.
VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Beaune Les Cents Vignes 1er Cru comes from a hectare parcel (1.16ha), around 60-year-old vines. This has quite a complex bouquet, fine mineralité and tension with dark cherry fruit mixed cranberry and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with well integrated oak, very elegant in style. This gently fans out with a sustained, sour cherry and crushed strawberry finish. A tender and quite delicious Beaune. (Neal Martin)
VN88+88–90 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023 The 2021 Santenay Les Gravières 1er Cru is the main cuvée and comes from a considerable 3.8-hectare parcel. Slightly darker in colour, this has a clean and pure bouquet with dark cherries, citrus fruit—Mirabelle and Clementine, lightly spiced with just a hint of soy. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant tannins, harmonious and focused, easygoing in the positive sense of the word. The wood tannins will require a little time to be fully assimilated. (Neal Martin)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2017 Côtes de Nuits Villages has an elegant, refined bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Very natural and poised. I prefer this to the 2018.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020 The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys, from vines adjacent to Charmes-Chambertin, is well-defined on the nose, offering blackberry, bilberry, touches of meat juice and light savory notes. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and vibrant, with fine grip on the entry and an almost symmetrical poise on the graphite finish. Excellent.
VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022 Bright ruby. Lively, spice-tinged cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors slow good clarity and a hint of succulent herbs. Taut and focused in style, with a hint of licorice emerging on the subtly tannic finish, which leaves a zesty, vaguely tart red currant note behind.
