New Zealand wine production dates back to colonial times (the mid-1800s) but never really took off until the 1970s. The most famous wine New Zealand now produces are white wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape and particularly from the area called Marlborough.

Other white wines of New Zealand to a lesser extent include Chardonnay and Riesling. Since the climate of New Zealand is generally cool with a maritime influence, the red wines of New Zealand are fewer and mostly relegated to Pinot Noir with some recent success with Syrah and Bordeaux varietals in certain areas.

Many of the important wine regions of New Zealand lie in valleys carved out of the mountains that dominate the country, protecting vineyards from wind while the mountains help block excessive rain. Since New Zealand is an island nation, the surrounding waters tend to moderate temperatures, providing for cooler summers and milder winters and protecting the grapes from temperature extremes.

    2021 / 750 ml. | Item#56511

    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
Aromatic and complex, this white shows off pure white and ruby grapefruit, lemongrass, passion fruit and dried pineapple flavors at the core, but it’s the details of matcha, sea salt, fresh-grated ginger and mint that make an impression on the long, sleek, juicy and expressive finish. Drink now. 43,000 cases made, 30,000 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

The pungent, plush 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Te Muna Road Vineyard (Martinborough) offers up layers of both grassy and elderflower flavors in combination with a tropical fruit salad. It’s sweetly fruited and ripe, presenting a rich mouthful of Sauvignon-ness. A small portion of barrel-fermented fruit has rounded the edges, and the fragrant finish is fresh yet ripe. A little more length would be welcome; this may have something to do with the addition of younger vines from new plantings. Drink in youth for its fruity freshness.
