New Zealand wine production dates back to colonial times (the mid-1800s) but never really took off until the 1970s. The most famous wine New Zealand now produces are white wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape and particularly from the area called Marlborough.

Other white wines of New Zealand to a lesser extent include Chardonnay and Riesling. Since the climate of New Zealand is generally cool with a maritime influence, the red wines of New Zealand are fewer and mostly relegated to Pinot Noir with some recent success with Syrah and Bordeaux varietals in certain areas.

Many of the important wine regions of New Zealand lie in valleys carved out of the mountains that dominate the country, protecting vineyards from wind while the mountains help block excessive rain. Since New Zealand is an island nation, the surrounding waters tend to moderate temperatures, providing for cooler summers and milder winters and protecting the grapes from temperature extremes.

Always experimenting, Erica and Kim Crawford (yes, that Kim Crawford, although he sold the famous winery with his namesake years ago) have used green-tea tannin extract in place of sulfur as an antimicrobial and preservative. It completely changes this famous wine style. Medium gold in color, it smells like honeycomb, pineapple turnover cake, lemon verbena, wild herbs and, yes, green tea. The palate is fresher than the nose and color imply. It’s dry with a gentle texture and lovely juiciness. Zesty fruit, ginger and a slight bite of tannin at the finish make for a characterful and highly food-friendly wine, more in the vein of a Chardonnay than a traditional Marlborough Sauvignon. Aromatic and complex, this white shows off pure white and ruby grapefruit, lemongrass, passion fruit and dried pineapple flavors at the core, but it’s the details of matcha, sea salt, fresh-grated ginger and mint that make an impression on the long, sleek, juicy and expressive finish. Drink now. 43,000 cases made, 30,000 cases imported. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

The pungent, plush 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Te Muna Road Vineyard (Martinborough) offers up layers of both grassy and elderflower flavors in combination with a tropical fruit salad. It’s sweetly fruited and ripe, presenting a rich mouthful of Sauvignon-ness. A small portion of barrel-fermented fruit has rounded the edges, and the fragrant finish is fresh yet ripe. A little more length would be welcome; this may have something to do with the addition of younger vines from new plantings. Drink in youth for its fruity freshness.

This is the Central Otago label from the Scott family (of Marlborough’s Allan Scott wines). Made from certified sustainable vineyards and fermented with native yeast, it takes its time opening but soon reveals appealing aromas of honeysuckle, passion fruit, bell pepper and green herbal characters. There’s a nice tingle of acidity on the chalky-textured palate and, while the finish is on the short side, there’s depth of flavor and plenty of refreshment here, too. (Christina Pickard)
