While Napa Valley itself is an appellation there are also sixteen sub-appellations or American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). It seems slightly more approachable and civilized for a young Togni wine, with a dense ruby/purple color, loads of blackcurrant, licorice, and graphite, some earth and spice, but very subtle earth nuances. It is full-bodied and rich, but the tannins are well-integrated and don’t scream as loudly as some vintages of Togni can. For Togni, this is probably one of his more forward and precociously styled Cabernets. It will probably approach drinkability in several years, but don’t discount its aging potential, as this easily has 20–25 years of cellaring potential.

Super-opaque purple in color, this cuvée is provocative and world-class. Inky purple in color, with crème de cassis, blackberry, espresso, graphite and a touch of oak, the wine is full-bodied, extremely rich and pure with wonderfully integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol. The finish goes on for 50+ seconds. It has medium to full body, outstanding purity, concentration and length. It was aged in 66% new French oak for 19 months prior to bottling. Composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc from the sandy Bale Loam soils of the 110 acres Larkmead possesses, it is a bigger boy at 14.9% alcohol but shows lots of crushed rock and wet gravel minerality, a beautiful, cedary, blackcurrant nose with notes of forest floor, allspice and soy, with more blackberry on the palate as well as some savory herbs and spice.
