Napa Valley wines are without question the most famous and important wines from the United States, even though the Napa Valley wine region is actually one of the smallest in the world. Some of the most iconic and recognizable Napa Valley Wineries include Beaulieu Vineyards, Beringer, Cliff Lede, Dominus, Hess, Robert Mondavi Winery, Opus One, and Sterling.

While Napa Valley itself is an appellation there are also sixteen sub-appellations or American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). The climate and terrain of these sub-appellations — including Los Carneros, St. Helena, Stags Leap District, and others — are actually quite diverse, ranging from rugged mountains to cooler coastal influences, and many nuances in-between.

Most Napa wine is made with premium varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel

  2. PlumpJack Merlot

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59876

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
Plumpjack’s 2019 Merlot offers terrific tension and grip. In 2019, the Merlot includes fruit from a site in Carneros, and that seams to add an extra dimension of energy that is quite appealing. Dried herbs, leather, tobacco and crushed flowers lend striking aromatic nuance to this savory, beautifully delineated wine. The 2019 is super distinctive, not to mention a real pleasure to taste. (Antonio Galloni)

A beautiful Merlot, the 2019 from PlumpJack offers everything you could want from this variety with its plump, fleshy, medium to full-bodied profile as well as terrific aromatics of black cherries, darker berries, leafy herbs, spring flowers, and a touch of chocolate. It’s ready to go yet should continue delivering the goods over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Aromas of plums, ripe red cherries, wet stones and roses. Medium-to full-bodied with soft tannins. Juicy and succulent with a lovely bed of red fruit. So fresh, too. Enchanting. 94% merlot, 5% petite sirah and 1% malbec. Drink now.
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Offers a narrow beam of refined currant, tobacco and spice flavors that build tension and tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 30,024 cases made. (Tim Fish)
    RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
The 2019 Merlot offers up scents of cherry tomato and Bing cherries on the nose, while it comes across as rather tart and tannic on the medium to full-bodied palate. It’s far from being my favorite offering from this winery, but as a steakhouse red-wine option, it’ll do just fine. (Joe Czerwinski)

  6. Kapcsándy Family Winery Roberta’s Reserve

    State Lane Vineyard
    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#56871

    VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Roberta’s Reserve is another magnificent wine from the Kapcsándy family. Beautifully ripe and deep, the Roberta’s balances richness with elegance in a stunning style. Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, licorice, spice and menthol, build as this creamy, expansive Merlot opens over time. The 2018 is all class. In a word: superb.
    JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
The Merlot-dominated 2018 Roberta’s Reserve (there is 2% Cabernet Franc) is also deeply hued and has a great nose of smoked black and blue fruits, gravelly earth, chocolate, and tobacco. As with all the wines here, it has incredible purity of fruit, the tannins are just about perfect, and it’s flawlessly balanced. Hide bottles for 4–5 years and enjoy over the following 15–20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 5th Nov 2020
A blend of 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Roberta’s Reserve State Lane Vineyard was aged in French oak, 75% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes bounding out of the glass with energetic notes of crushed red and black plums, boysenberries and Morello cherries plus hints of blueberry pie, camphor, dark chocolate, star anise and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid foundation of ripe, rounded tannins and bold freshness supporting the generous, crunchy black and red fruit, finishing long and lifted. 175 cases were made.

    2014 / 750 ml. | Item#45350

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Oct 2016
A blend of 72% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2014 Firebelle finished at 14.9% alcohol. It is a beautifully rich, chocolaty wine with notes of savory spices, black cherries and mulberries, some fudge and coffee bean. It has medium to full body, outstanding purity, concentration and length. It was aged in 66% new French oak for 19 months prior to bottling. Drink it over the next 15–20 years.
    VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2015
A precise, aromatically lifted wine, the 2014 Firebelle boasts striking finesse and overall delineation. Hints of lavender, spice and mint meld into a core of super-expressive dark red and bluish fruits. Here, too, the comparison with the 2013 is telling. There is plenty of potential, that much is clear.

  9. PerUs Bryn

    Proprietary Red Wine
    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#57234

    JD9797 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021
I was blown away by the 2018 Bryn, only the second vintage I’ve been able to taste. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it’s a more plush, sexy wine, especially in the vintage, with full-bodied aromas and flavors of chocolaty dark fruits, tobacco leaf, earth, and spice. With a great mid-palate, building richness, and velvety tannins, it holds onto the pure, seamless style of the vintage. It’s well worth seeking out and is going to cruise in cold cellars for 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 18th Mar 2021
The 2018 Red Blend Bryn is composed of 77% Merlot (from Sugarloaf Mountain vineyard in south Napa) and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon (from Tench vineyard in Oakville). Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes barreling out of the glass with stewed plums and spearmint notes, followed by hints of cigars, dusty soil and bouquet garni. Full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of lively herb-laced rich black fruits, finishing on a lingering minty note. 395 cases were made.

  10. Screaming Eagle The Flight

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#48715

    JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, December 17, 2018
This is very tight grained and beautifully balanced with violets, crushed stones and a brambleberry character. Extremely aromatic and perfumed. Medium to full body with a compressed mouthfeel of wonderfully fine and fresh tannins. A fantastic merlot-based red for the vintage. Structured yet so balanced. Beautiful now but better in 2021.
    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Apr 2018
Very deep purple-black, the 2015 The Flight (a blend of 61% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon) opens with electric notes of black and blue fruit sparks—wild blueberries, fresh blackberries and crushed black plums—with nuances of lavender, violets, pencil shavings, tilled soil, yeast extract and a waft of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, it hits the palate with tons of energy and freshness supported by firm, finely grained tannins, finishing with tons of fragrant earth layers.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018
The 2015 The Flight, Screaming Eagle’s Merlot-based wine, is terrific. Powerful, deep and explosive, the 2015 is endowed with serious richness and intensity in all of its dimensions. The 2015 is an especially dark, somber wine. As often happens with young Merlot-based wines, The Flight appears to be going through a somewhat closed phase at the moment. That won’t be an issue once the wine has a bit more time to come together. Time in the glass brings out hints of lavender, gravel, red cherry, mocha and espresso. The 2015 is going to be fascinating to follow for the next several decades.
    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2019
While the Merlot from this estate has always gone under the name Second Flight, the wine was certainly not a second wine and always came from the same parcels (and more iron-rich soils) and is a very different wine compared to the Cabernet Sauvignon release. As such, they’ve opted (correctly I think) to change the name of the cuvée to The Flight. The 2015 The Flight is a beautiful wine and up with some of the best examples of Merlot out there, offering up tons of black cherries, currants, dried flowers, forest floor, and earthy aromas and flavors. Made in the same classic, elegant, vibrant style as the Cabernet, this full-bodied beauty is as silky and seamless as it gets, with perfect balance and a great finish. Drink it any time over the coming 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

  11. Screaming Eagle The Flight

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#50839

    VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018
The 2016 The Flight is gorgeous. Dark, brooding and closed in on itself, the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its very best, but it is incredibly beguiling today. Plum, black cherry, lavender, blood orange menthol, and a host of more mineral-driven notes punctuate this super-expressive wine. This is a decidedly tannic and powerful edition of The Flight. I can’t wait to see how it ages. Bottled just six weeks before this tasting, the 2016 appears to have a very bright future. Time in the glass brings out some of the softer edges that will almost surely emerge with cellaring. The Flight is built on a core of older Merlot vines from the southeast corner of the estate. It is an absolutely riveting wine from Screaming Eagle.
    RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th May 2019
Composed roughly of two-thirds Merlot with 5% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the medium to deep colored 2016 The Flight opens with bold, expressive notions of wild blueberries, warm plums and boysenberries with touches of black raspberries, spice cake, violets, dark chocolate and potpourri with a hint of menthol. Full-bodied, rich, spicy and jam-packed with energy, it has beautifully plush tannins texturing the multilayered blue and black fruits, delivering a very long, perfumed finish.
    JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2019
The 2016 The Flight is another beauty, and it’s slightly more elegant and balanced, as well as pure, than the 2015. A blend of 66% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, this vibrant purple-colored effort offers a huge perfume of blue fruits, violets, and incense that develops with time in the glass. It’s medium to full-bodied, seamless, and incredibly elegant, yet has depth, intensity, and length. (Jeb Dunnuck)

  12. Screaming Eagle The Flight

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#59169

    JS9999 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 7, 2022
Extremely floral and aromatic with violets and lavender throughout. Black olives, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, very fine-grained tannins that run the length of the wine. Goes on for minutes. A greenish undertone comes out at the end with some spearmint, green tea and green olive. About two-thirds merlot. Best after 2028, but already stunning.
    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 The Flight, the estate’s Merlot-based wine, is dark, powerful and brooding in demeanor, almost shockingly so. The natural concentration of a year with low yields and small berries is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, graphite, lavender and blue/purplish fruit builds as this virile, explosive wine shows off its arresting beauty. In a word: impressive. (Antonio Galloni)
    JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022
Leading off with the 2019 Flight, which is 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, this has a beautiful perfume of red cherries, raspberries, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the finesse, elegance, and lively style favored at this estate today, with perfectly integrated tannins and both richness and freshness. I love its overall balance as well as length, and it will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and should have upwards of two decades of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
