Napa Valley wines are without question the most famous and important wines from the United States, even though the Napa Valley wine region is actually one of the smallest in the world. Some of the most iconic and recognizable Napa Valley Wineries include Beaulieu Vineyards, Beringer, Cliff Lede, Dominus, Hess, Robert Mondavi Winery, Opus One, and Sterling.
While Napa Valley itself is an appellation there are also sixteen sub-appellations or American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). The climate and terrain of these sub-appellations — including Los Carneros, St. Helena, Stags Leap District, and others — are actually quite diverse, ranging from rugged mountains to cooler coastal influences, and many nuances in-between.
Most Napa wine is made with premium varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 Plumpjack’s 2019 Merlot offers terrific tension and grip. In 2019, the Merlot includes fruit from a site in Carneros, and that seams to add an extra dimension of energy that is quite appealing. Dried herbs, leather, tobacco and crushed flowers lend striking aromatic nuance to this savory, beautifully delineated wine. The 2019 is super distinctive, not to mention a real pleasure to taste. (Antonio Galloni)JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022 A beautiful Merlot, the 2019 from PlumpJack offers everything you could want from this variety with its plump, fleshy, medium to full-bodied profile as well as terrific aromatics of black cherries, darker berries, leafy herbs, spring flowers, and a touch of chocolate. It’s ready to go yet should continue delivering the goods over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select is another gem, offering lots of cassis and darker cherry fruits as well as notes of lead pencil and crushed stone. Flawlessly balanced, medium to full-bodied, and as elegant and seamless as they come, it’s already impossible to resist (as are most 2019s) but I’ve no doubt this will evolve for 15–20 years in cold cellars. (Jeb Dunnuck)JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, May 5, 2022 Blueberry and blackberry aromas with some violets and lavender Full-to medium-bodied with fine tannins and lots of juiciness. Drink or hold.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select is a supple, juicy wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Jammy dark fruit, chocolate, spice, dried herbs and licorice are nicely pushed forward. The tannins need a bit of time to soften, but this is nicely done. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, sumptuous, flamboyantly ripe wine. This is especially opulent, even by Kongsgaard standards. Chocolate, plum, cloves, new leather, licorice and spice build in a pliant, sumptuous Cabernet that will drink well right out of the gate. A year ago, the 2017 was massively tannic; today, it is much more suave and sensual, albeit with huge depth to back that up.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2018 The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Olmo has really come together since I last tasted it from barrel. Graphite, smoke, crushed rocks, spice and rose petal overtones give the 2015 Dr. Olmo its distinctive aromatic signatures. The 2015 finishes with remarkable tension and energy. What a gorgeous wine it is.JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - December 29, 2017 Of the three top Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Olmo is the most classic expression of Cabernet and offers Pauillac-like notes of black cherry, cassis, lead pencil shavings, espresso roast, and gravelly minerality. It’s full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, and will benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and shine for 20–25 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2020 Ribolla Gialla Vare Vineyard is super-elegant, savory and nuanced. In 2020, the Ribolla has a bit more edginess than in most years, probably a combination of the natural character of Ribolla, early bottling and the early personality of the year. I like the aromatics quite a bit, though. This needs time in bottle. There is plenty of energy.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is gorgous. Bright and vibrant, the 2019 offers a compelling mix of inky red fruit, blood orange and exotic spice, all in a style that marries richness with energy. In that sense, it is a super-classic 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)
JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, February 14, 2020 Wonderful blackberry and blackcurrant aromas here with hints of mint and fresh sage. Some cassis. Wrought iron, too. Full-bodied, tight and elegant with lovely tension. Beautiful. Ends fine and focused. Drinkable now, but better after 2022.VN96+96+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2017 Proprietary Red Wine Sage Mountain Vineyard comes across as remarkably primary. Bright red-toned fruit and floral notes give the 2017 striking freshness as well as nuance. Deep and layered on the palate, with superb depth, the 2017 Continuum is easily one of the wines of the year. Even in the early going, it is truly magnificent.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is quite inviting in its first impression, even if all the elements haven’t quite come together just yet. That won’t be an issue in a few years’ time, but for now the 2018 is best left alone untouched for a bit. Bright acids, red berry fruit and lifted aromatics make for a delicious and promising Napa Valley Cabernet. The Napa Valley Cabernet is a pure St. Helena wine.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2016 The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is super-refined, polished and articulate, with mid-weight structure and fine overall balance. Readers should expect a somewhat laid-back wine by Dalla Valle’s standards. In 2014, the Cabernet Sauvignon is especially aromatic and nuanced. It should drink well with minimal cellaring.
JD97+97+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021 Starting with the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville, this 100% Cabernet comes from the southern, cooler end of the valley and was brought up in a mix of new and used French oak. Its dense purple color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of cassis, candied violets, toasted spices, tobacco, and lead pencil-like nuances. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated 2018 that offers flawless balance, building, ripe, seamless tannins, and a great finish. Very much in the more elegant, streamlined style of the vintage, it will benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age and evolve for 20–30 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville, shows why Coombsville is so magical. Deep and inky, but with striking gorgeous freshness, the Coombsville Cabernet is dazzling. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, sweet spice and licorice infuse the 2018 with fabulous depth as well as complexity. Even with all of its natural exuberance, the 2018 remains light on its feet. The 2018 has really blossomed over the last year, as I thought it would. This is a fabulous showing.
JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021 Next up, the 2018 La Magalena comes from the Oakville Ranch Vineyard and in 2018 is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Incredible notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, tobacco leaf, violets, and spring flowers all emerge from this beauty, and it hits the palate with flawless balance, full-bodied richness, a great, great mid-palate, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Probably a candidate for perfection in 5–7 years, this is a magical Bordeaux blend from an incredible terroir as well as a great winemaker. Hide bottles in the cellar for 5–7 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 30 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN97+97+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The Favia 2018 La Magdalena is a powerhouse. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of inky dark red fruit as this hulking Cabernet Franc-based wine starts to open in the glass. Readers will have to be patient with the 2018, as it is rather imposing at this stage. Mocha, dried rose petal, spice and a whole range of savory notes linger. All I can say is: Wow!
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely impeccable. Best of all, it won’t require years in the cellar to be enjoyable. In fact, it is quite expressive today. Juicy dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather and cinnamon are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. Silky and supple, with no hard edges, Ric Forman’s 2018 is a thing of beauty. The 2018 is a bit more open in the early going than Forman fans are likely to expect.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/27/2021 I also loved the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings another level of purity and class, offering gorgeous crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, white flowers, tobacco leaf, vanilla bean, and damp earth-like aromas and flavors. Pure, clean, full-bodied, and just a classy, flawlessly balanced beauty, it has fine tannins, the freshness of the vintage, and a great finish. Enjoy bottles over the coming 15–20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN94+94+ pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 Keever’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. In fact, it is one of the very best wines I have ever tasted here. Rich and explosive, with striking depth, the 2018 is beautifully layered and so expressive from the very first taste. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol and licorice all build as this sumptuous Cabernet shows off its curves. I would give the 2018 a few years in bottle to soften. In a word: fabulous. (Antonio Galloni)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022 The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big wine, but it is also surprisingly approachable for a young Kongsgaard Cabernet. Bright and vibrant, the 2019 offers up copious dark red/purplish fruit, mocha, wild flowers and pomegranate, with a firm spine of tannin that gives the wine its energy and shape. The 2019 will be positively stellar with a bit of time in the cellar. Actually, it already is.
JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/30/2021 More blue fruits as well as blackcurrants, leafy tobacco, chocolate, candied flowers, and baking spices all emerge from the 2018 Hexameter, and it’s full-bodied, with an incredibly pure, seamless texture, polished tannins, and one heck of a great, great finish. While this is unquestionably a mountain wine, with a building sense of minerality, it has a rare sense of elegance and purity, flawless balance, and is just a heavenly, singular wine. Based on 51% Cabernet Franc, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in 65% new French oak, it will evolve for 25–30 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021 The 2018 Hexameter, Ovid’s Cabernet Franc-based wine is stellar. It also shows just how stunning Franc is in these rocky red soils. Effusive aromatics and bright saline notes abound. There is a level of vibrancy to the 2018 that is impossible to miss. Crushed rocks, rose petal, spice, licorice and new leather are some of the notes that race out of the glass. All the best elements of this site come through in a stunning wine that dazzles from start to finish.
