VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 Depicting a bucolic scene of the church in Boulay’s home of Chavignol along with a couple of goats—this is home to the cheese crottin de Chavignol — the 2021 Sancerre is a rich and impressive style that’s full of nectarine fruit. Vinified in barrel, there’s a roundness to Sauvignon’s normally angular edge and a hint of sweetness although Boulay insists it is fully dry. The white limestone soils provide the tender texture, but there’s a real sense of structural grip on the long finish. Delicious now but based on historic examples, will be even better in 10 years. At the end of the tasting Boulay mentioned the wines had been open for several days before my arrival, and I will endeavor to taste fresh samples. (Rebecca Gibb MW)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2020 Vivid ruby. Classic Chinon nose that’s earthy, savory and meaty, showing notes of plum and tomato. On the palate, flavors of black cherry and licorice, rich and plush, along with velvety tannins, attractive hints of pencil shavings and a long dark mineral finish.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 A hallowed wine from a tiny parcel on the Monts Damnés hill, the 2020 Sancerre Comtesse is an elegant yet sweetly fruited expression offering a distinctive and youthful array of fruits from melon to pear and nectarine. While pure and precise, there’s a sensation of sweetness, which seems to come from a combination of the oak, the ripeness of the fruit and the high alcohol; it’s a little hot on the finish, somewhat diminishing its otherwise refined personality. VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 This is a very fine, fragrant and floral Le Haut-Lieu Sec. While delicate, the 2021 fills the mouth with a cloud of pure fruit reminiscent of violets, apple and nectarine skin. There’s a fine sinew that pulls the wine through the finish.
