French wines and the appellations they come from are very diverse. That might be the reason why the French are currently the number one producers of wine and the number one consumers of wine.

France is blessed as both a cool-climate producer of wines in regions such as Burgundy, Champagne, Loire Valley, and Alsace where grapes like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling thrive, while the warmer ocean-influenced climate of Bordeaux allows for near perfect ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in most years. Even warmer sub-tropical influences can be tasted in the rich, extroverted, and largely Grenache-based wines of the Southern Rhone Valley such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as well as in Provence and the Languedoc/Roussillon located near the Mediterranean Sea in Southern France.

Winemadeeasy.com has an excellent selection of French wine from inexpensive Cotes-du-Rhone and hand-selected petite Bordeaux, to highly rated wines including Chateauneuf-du-Pape and first-growth Bordeaux, and an eclectic mix in-between.

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#53194

    WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
This is a powerful Rosé, built with the addition of 13 percent red wine (pinot noir from Bouzy) and 11 percent of the blend aged in oak foudres. It starts off youthfully intense, with a smoky black-tea edge to the tannins. The wine is structured and savory, freighted with limestone earthiness until it grows bright and racy with air. This is built to last.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2020
A crowd-pleaser for its fine balance and integration, offering a mouthwatering mix of wild strawberry and peach fruit, biscuit and salted almond flavors. Hints of anise, pink grapefruit zest and honey show on the creamy finish. Disgorged January 2019. Drink now through 2027.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2020
An attractive pale rosé color heralds a crisp, dry style of Champagne, ripe and now mature. Along with the structure and minerality that give the wine its shape and further potential, there is a hint of the toastiness to come. Drink the wine now, or even better, wait until 2021.

    2012 / 1.5 L. | Item#38983

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2014
A dark, loamy style, with warm tar and espresso notes underscoring the core of black Mission fig, Black Forest cake and steeped plum fruit. Juniper and singed alder hints add texture and contrast on the finish. Best from 2015 through 2027. 500 cases imported.
    RP92+92–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2013
Made from older vines and a tank-aged blend of roughly 85% Grenache and the balance Mourvedre and Syrah, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes has additional levels of kirsch, garrigue, ground herbs and black raspberry as well as a full-bodied, decadently textured profile on the palate. Despite the richness level here, it remains gorgeously fresh and even elegant. Enjoy it over the coming 10–12 years. Drink now–2024.

    RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
The awesome 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve is at the top of the heap in the vintage, and is world-class stuff. Sharing lots of similarities to the Les Trois Sources (they come from similar terroirs), it has another level of concentration and density, with incredible liquid rock, blueberry, violets, licorice and bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. A rock star on the palate, it has full-bodied power, perfect balance, a seamless, elegant texture and blockbuster mid-palate depth. Coming from 100-year-old Grenache vines and pure sand soils, it’s a tour de force that will have two-plus decades of life.

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#51164

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Apr 2015
This is another estate in Pauillac that has dramatically raised its performance level over the last decade. The 2012, from grapes harvested between October 2 and 17, has supple tannins and a nice mouthfeel that builds incrementally, offering up plenty of crème de cassis, plum and blackberry fruit. The wine is soft, round, opulently textured, and an undeniable success for 2012. The purity of fruit is also admirable. Drink this medium to full-bodied Pauillac over the next 20 years. This is significantly better than the barrel samples tasted in March, 2013.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2016
The 2012 Grand Puy Ducasse is bold, racy and supple, all qualities that are best appreciated sooner rather than later. There is plenty to admire in the wine’s giving, open-knit personality. Succulent red cherries, plums, mint and sweet spices round out the inviting finish. The 2012 is a bit two-dimensional, but it is nevertheless a solid effort for the year, not to mention quite appealing.

  6. Château Haut-Bailly Pessac-Léognan

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#40419

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2015
Well-stuffed, with thick and muscular brambly structure that easily supports the core of macerated black currant, fig and boysenberry fruit flavors. A tarry edge coats the finish. More backwards than most of its peers at this early stage, but all the elements are in place. Best from 2018 through 2027. 6,665 cases made.
    RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Apr 2013
While the 2012 Haut-Bailly is not as powerful or rich as the 2009 and 2010, it is classically elegant, racy and noble. This medium-bodied effort is the poster child for elegance, finesse, balance and equilibrium. The Cantemerle of Pessac-Leognan? Its deep ruby/plum/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of black cherries, black currants, lead pencil shavings and a touch of spicy oak. This medium-bodied, pretty wine will benefit from 4–5 years of cellaring and last for two decades.

  7. Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#38830

    RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2013
Also showing the purity and freshness of the vintage, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin, which was harvested towards the end of September, displays classic licorice, crushed violets, flowers and mineral-tinged black fruits to go with a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced and lively feel on the palate. Always 100% Grenache that comes from very old vines and sandy soils, it is one impressive tank sample. Give it a couple years in the cellar and enjoy bottles over the following decade or longer. Drink 2015–2027.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2014
Dense but refined, showing layers of fig, boysenberry and blackberry paste offset with notes of anise, fruitcake, allspice, mulled plum and black tea. Exhibits a silky feel through the finish, with lots of sneaky length as an iron accent lingers gracefully. Best from 2015 through 2030. 390 cases imported.
    ST92+92–94 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014
Deep ruby. Dark berries, incense, candied flowers and minerals on the highly perfumed nose. Offers sweet black raspberry and lavender flavors that become spicier with aeration. Fine-grained and sappy, with excellent finishing clarity and smooth, harmonious tannins adding grip. This sexy Chateauneuf will likely be delicious soon after release, but it has the concentration to strongly suggest that patience will be rewarded.

  8. Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#38831

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2014
Tightly coiled for now, this features an intense, vivid core of anise, blackberry coulis, plum paste and macerated fig fruit, with black tea, smoldering tobacco and warm ganache notes. Long and dense, but very silky, with gorgeous violet and pastis details lingering in the background. Should unwind with time. Best from 2017 through 2035. 390 cases imported.
    RP95+95–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2013
Most likely one of the top 2–3 wines produced, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a rough blend of 80–85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre (which was harvested October 10) and the balance Syrah, that hit 15.4% natural alcohol. Seeing the same elevage as the 2011, it sports an inky purple color as well as spectacular array of black and blue fruits, violets, liquid flowers and underbrush to go with an energetic, seamless and full-bodied profile on the palate. Lighter weight than the 2007 and 2010, it possesses notable freshness, purity and elegance. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and thrill for upward of two decades. Drink 2016–2032.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015
Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a smoky overtone and bright minerality. Pliant and seamless in the mouth, offering intense, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors that are energized by juicy acidity. Shows real power and focus on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of candied flowers. There’s 15% alcohol here, which is actually quite low for this bottling, and I don’t detect any undue heat.
    ST93+93–95 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014
Inky ruby. Blackberry, blueberry and pungent herbs on the mineral-accented nose, with a floral topnote providing lift. Impressively sweet, lush and deep, showing sexy flavors of dark berry preserves, candied lavender and spicecake. Finishes very long and smooth, with supple tannins, lingering spiciness and outstanding clarity.

  9. Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Reine des Bois

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#39978

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
One of the blockbusters in the vintage, the inky-colored 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape La Reine des Bois — 80% Grenache, completely destemmed and aged 12 months in 80% stainless steel and 20% old barrels — offers fantastic richness and depth in its blackberry liqueur, graphite, wood smoke and crushed-rock-like aromas and flavors. An elegant, stylish and polished example of this cuvée, it comes closest in my mind to a lighter-weight 2010. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and with fine tannin, it will drink well for 10–15 years.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015
Inky ruby. High-pitched red and dark berry scents are complemented by suggestions of candied flowers and smoky Indian spices. Silky, sweet and palate-staining, offering intense black raspberry and blueberry flavors and an exotic twist of blood orange. Manages to be both powerful and lithe, finishing with harmonious tannins and outstanding clarity and length.
    ST93+93–95 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014
Deep ruby. Fresh black and blue fruits on the highly perfumed nose, with floral and Indian spice nuances adding complexity. Sappy, penetrating and pure, with very good depth and energy to its boysenberry and cherry-cola flavors. At once rich and lively, finishing with impressive power, supple tannins and lingering spiciness.

  10. Domaine du Pegau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Reservée

    2012 / 1.5 L. | Item#39984

    RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2013
As to the 2012s, while there will be no Cuvee da Capo in the vintage, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is a beauty. Tasted out of multiple barrels (all of which rated between 94 and 97), it should be a classic Pegau with aromatics similar to the 2010, yet not quite as much depth or richness. Full-bodied and nicely concentrated, all of the samples showed the freshness of the vintage, with ample mid-palate depth, high quality tannin and loads of character. It should benefit from short-term cellaring and have 15–20 years of longevity. Drink 2016–2032.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2015
A dark, alluring style, with tobacco, chestnut and alder notes surrounding a core of blackberry, plum and cherry fruit. Lots of garrigue details line the finish, showing a warm paving stone hint. Should settle in nicely in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2023. 6,670 cases made.
    ST92+92–94 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014
Bright purple. Smoky, spice-accented aromas of blackberry and cherry-cola, with sexy floral and mineral overtones. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering an array of red and dark berry preserve flavors complicated by hints of Indian spices and black pepper. Rich and energetic, with strong finishing thrust, slow-building tannins and a late kick of smoky minerality. I was looking for some funky gaminess here but didn’t find any.

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#39979

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is in the top 2–3 wines in the vintage. Possessing rock-star concentration and depth, full-bodied richness and loads of sweet tannin, it offers layers of ripe blackberry, graphite, licorice and toasted-spice aromas and flavors. One of the more powerful and structured efforts in the vintage, it nevertheless always stays balanced, graceful and light on the palate. Give it 2–3 years and enjoy bottles through 2027.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2015
Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed bouquet of ripe dark berries, potpourri and sandalwood, with a mineral note adding vibrancy. Round and seamless on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a strong jolt of candied rose. Quite suave and approachable, finishing with solid punch, gentle tannins and lingering spiciness.
    ST91+91–93 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014
Inky ruby. Strongly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe blackberry, blueberry, violet and smoky oak. Seamless and sweet, offering plush dark berry compote flavors and an exotic floral pastille quality. Deep ruby. Heady spice-accented blackberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suave floral and spice qualities, with white pepper and licorice nuances emering with air. Seamless, broad and sweet in the mouth, offering silky black and blue fruit preserve flavors and a hint of allspice. Closes juicy and long, with slow-building tannins and lingering spiciness.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2014
The direct black currant and fig paste notes are underscored with tobacco, tar and roasted alder hints, revealing an echo of Black Forest cake. The finish rumbles along, leaving a dark, slightly muscular feel. Best from 2015 through 2027. 125 cases made.
    ST91+91–93 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jan/Feb 2014
Bright ruby. Candied red fruits, spicecake and minerals on the highly perfumed nose, with an exotic blood orange nuance in the background. Juicy and precise, displaying very good clarity and lift to its sappy raspberry and cherry flavors. Darker in tone on the finish, clinging with impressive tenacity and appealing sweetness.
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
The 2012s Châteauneuf du Pape Signature is a seamless, graceful red that has pretty kirsch, blackberry, spice and garrigue to go with a forward, supple style on the palate. Made from 65% Grenache, 16% Mourvedre, 13% Syrah and 6% other permitted varieties, it has sweet tannin, a light, clean texture and keeps you coming back for another drink. Enjoy it over the coming decade.

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#53115

    SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
This defines old school, with savory detail and notes of roasted chestnut, fresh tobacco leaf, cedar and brick dust leading off, backed by a core of currant, cherry and plum fruit flavors that is lightly dried yet nonetheless fresh and racy in feel. Singed juniper and bay leaf hints score the finish. Likely to hold just like this for some time. Best from 2020 through 2040. 400 cases made, 100 cases imported.
    RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017
According to Marcel Bonneau on this visit, all of the 2012 wine will be bottled as Reserve des Celestins. Tasted from barrel, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins flirts with that fine line between deep, chocolaty richness and raisiny over-ripeness. This is full-bodied and powerful but silky at the same time. If it’s bottled soon, it should be amazing.
    JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - October 19, 2017
Scheduled to be bottled in October (it’s probably already in bottle), the 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve des Célestins is gorgeous stuff and has everything you expect from this estate. Black currants, garrigue, beef blood and ground pepper all give way to a ripe, sexy and full-bodied beauty that has sweet tannin. I’m quite sure Henri would snub his nose and call the wine too easy, in his gregarious way, but count me as a fan. (Jeb Dunnuck)
