Shop Our Selection of French Wines

French wines and the appellations they come from are very diverse. That might be the reason why the French are currently the number one producers of wine and the number one consumers of wine.

France is blessed as both a cool-climate producer of wines in regions such as Burgundy, Champagne, Loire Valley, and Alsace where grapes like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling thrive, while the warmer ocean-influenced climate of Bordeaux allows for near perfect ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in most years. Even warmer sub-tropical influences can be tasted in the rich, extroverted, and largely Grenache-based wines of the Southern Rhone Valley such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as well as in Provence and the Languedoc/Roussillon located near the Mediterranean Sea in Southern France.

Winemadeeasy.com has an excellent selection of French wine from inexpensive Cotes-du-Rhone and hand-selected petite Bordeaux, to highly rated wines including Chateauneuf-du-Pape and first-growth Bordeaux, and an eclectic mix in-between.

  1. Domaine Grand Nicolet Rasteau Vieilles Vignes

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#58683

    JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/28/2018
The old vine cuvée is the 2017 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes, based on 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that’s brought up in older barrels. Blackberries, toasted spice, smoked earth and licorice notes all flow to a rich, powerful, concentrated Rasteau that has ripe, present tannins and a great finish. It’s certainly going to be an outstanding wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2020
Densely concentrated plum and black cherry flavors are muted by savory notes of crushed earth and tobacco and in this full-bodied blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It’s a rounded, open-knit wine that’s showing glimpses of maturity, so it’s best to enjoy now–2024. (Anna Lee C. Iijima)

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#53519

    JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - November 1, 2018
A little gem of a wine is the 2017 Côtes Catalanes Roubials from Saint Roch, which is mostly Grenache mixed with 10% Mourvèdre, brought up in 20% new barrels. It has loads of fresh blackberry and blueberry fruits intermixed with plenty of violets, leafy herbs, and charcoal aromas and flavors. Drink this medium-bodied, pure, seamless beauty over the coming 5–7 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2019
Mainly Grenache, the 2017 Roubials is another fine example of the good work being done at this property. Black cherries dominate the nose, while the palate is slightly earthier. Full-bodied, dense and tannic, it could use another year in the bottle to loosen up, but the tannins are soft, so there’s no real need to defer gratification.

  4. Château Pavie Macquin

    Premier Grand Cru Classé
    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#51960

    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Mar 2020
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Pavie Macquin comes charging out of the glass with exuberant scents of warm black cherries, blackberry pie and wild blueberry coulis plus hints of menthol, licorice, candied violets and charcuterie. Medium-bodied, the palate is an exercise in precision and poise, featuring a beautiful frame of wonderfully ripe, very fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long and multilayered. Simply stunning! The blend here is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 70% new.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2020
The 2017 Pavie Macquin is a rich, deep and super-expressive wine with remarkable persistence. As always, Pavie Macquin is a potent Saint-Émilion, but the 2017 has terrific energy as well. In 2017, Pavie-Macquin is not as forthcoming in its youth as it can be, and is going to need a few years in bottle to truly come together. A bit of time in the glass brings out very pretty floral top notes and rich, sensual fruit that is such a signature of this site. Tasted three times.
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2020
Features a delightfully pure aromatic burst of cassis and cool plum fruit leading off, followed by a rush of violet and lilac notes that add lift. Underneath, a subtle graphite edge injects sneaky length through the finish. Built on purity and cut. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2040. 4,833 cases made.
    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/26/2020
Coming from a cool terroir located on the upper plateau, just behind Chateau Pavie, the 2017 Chateau Pavie Macquin checks in as a mix of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 16 months in 70% new French oak. This wine is always closed, tannic, and hard to understand in its youth, yet blossoms with 7–8 years of bottle age. The 2017 sports a deep, purple/ruby color as well as beautiful notes of black raspberries, cassis, huge minerality, white flowers, and loamy earth. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet silky and seamless on the palate, it doesn’t have the sheer weight and flesh of the 2015 and 2016 yet is flawlessly balanced, has terrific tannins, and a great finish. It will be drinkable with just 4–6 years of bottle age and cruise for 15–20 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2021
This rich, wood-aged wine comes from 40- to 50-year-old vines on an estate at the southern limit of the Madiran appellation. It brings together dense tannins and old-vine concentration. The acidity, black-plum flavors and tannins will keep this wine developing for many years. Drink from 2023. (Roger Voss)

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#57278

    JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2019
The Lirac from this estate is the 2017 Lirac Clos de Sixte. It’s another deep purple-colored effort offering powerful notes of ripe black cherries, melted licorice, violets, and pepper. Full-bodied, forward, ripe, and flamboyantly styled, it’s packed with fruit and texture. Drink it over the coming 4–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Aged in a mix of tanks (70%) and barrels (30%), the 2017 Lirac Domaine du Clos de Sixte is a blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre. Hints of vanilla and licorice accent dark, cola-like notes and plummy fruit fruit in this full-bodied, plush, velvety-textured wine. It should drink well for 5–6 years. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes. (Joe Czerwinski)

  8. Château Pibran Pauillac

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#51968

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2020
The 2017 Pibran is a juicy, absolutely delicious Pauillac to drink now and over the next decade or so. Sweet tobacco, cedar, licorice, mint and dried cherry add pretty aromatic top notes to round things out. The 2017 is not super complex or structured, but it is a wine of immense pleasure and sensuality. I loved it.
    JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - February 26, 2020
Based mostly on Merlot (68%), the 2017 Chateau Pibran reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as terrific notes of damp earth, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and black cherry and currant fruits. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, and balanced, it’s a terrific 2017 that’s already hard to resist. Drink it over the coming 10–15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Mar 2020
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Pibran gives up notes of redcurrant jelly, baked plum and blackcurrant cordial with ints of stewed tea, fragrant earth and new leather. Medium-bodied, the palate has great vibrancy, with bags of crunchy fruit and a soft texture, finishing with lovely purity.

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#54616

    VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2019
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Fonteny 1er Cru, which contains 40% whole bunch fruit, has a very detailed bouquet of crushed-stone-infused, minerally fruit; hints of incense and lavender emerge with time in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant right from the start, offering candied tart red fruit mixed with orange zest and citrus peel, wonderful definition and such vivacity on the finish that you will beg for another sip straight away. Might this surpass the Clos Saint-Jacques this year?

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#60603

    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/6/2020
Lastly, and tasted from bottle, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée showed brilliantly, with the beautiful, Provençal character of the vintage as well as classic Pegau notes of red and black currants, smoked herbs, cured meats, new leather, and ground pepper all front and center. More in the style of the 1999 or 2005 than say the 2007 or 2009, it’s medium to full-bodied, has beautiful concentration, ample structure and tannins, and a focused, backward mouthfeel that’s going to benefit from bottle age. This beauty will evolve for 30 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

  11. Domaine Giraud Les Galimardes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#50449

    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2019
Juicy in feel, with a compact, well-built core of blackberry, black currant and plum paste flavors, infused liberally with licorice snap and apple wood notes. A tarry hint underscores the finish, though the fruit stays dominant and driven throughout. Very solid. Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2021 through 2038. 200 cases made, 90 cases imported.
    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
The two special cuvées are some of the gems in the vintage. The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Gallimardes comes from one of the great sites in the southern part of the appellation and is just about all Grenache (there’s some very old vine Syrah, which struggles in this hot terroir). While not up to the out of this world 2016, it has a beautiful bouquet of cassis, kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, garrigue, and peppery herbs. Deep, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, it has ultra-fine tannins as well as loads of character. It’s going to drink brilliantly for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    VN94+94–95 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
Youthful violet. Highly perfumed, sharply detailed aromas of black raspberry, cherry liqueur, floral oils, smoky minerals and exotic spices. Juicy, seamless and energetic on the palate; sweet red and blue fruit, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors display a suave marriage of power and finesse. Delivers a serious punch of flavor but comes off lithe. The floral and mineral qualities linger on a sappy, wonderfully long finish shaped by smooth tannins.
    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
More tightly coiled than last year, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes now seems more herbal than floral, with greenish streaks running through the crisp red berry fruit. A 90-10 blend of Grenache and Syrah from the lieu-dit les Gallimardes, the Syrah spent a year in new oak, while the Grenache aged in tank. It’s full-bodied yet taut and racy, but it should relax in a couple of years and then drink well for at least a decade.

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#51964

    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Mar 2020
The 2017 Capbern is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with aromas of baked blackberries, Morello cherries, cassis, fertile loam, unsmoked cigars and sautéed herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, firm and grainy with a good black fruit core and red fruit sparks on the finish. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. The final blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2017 Capbern was bottled at the end April 2019. The wine has a perfumed bouquet with black fruit and light marine aromas, and a touch of brine in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin, very classic in style and quintessentially Saint-Estèphe. Moderate in length, there is a slight rawness on the finish.

  14. Château de Saint Cosme “Le Poste” Gigondas

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#49774

    RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
The 2017 Gigondas le Poste is just super: super purple, super concentrated and super tannic. Really intense, it’s not a wine for the shy, steamrollering along with dark fruit and powerful notes of licorice on the lengthy finish.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Deep lurid ruby. Highly fragrant suggestions of ripe red berries, cherry preserves, exotic spices and candied flowers are accompanied by a smoky mineral element that builds steadily with air. Smooth and seamless on the palate, offering intense black raspberry, cherry cola, spicecake and candied lavender flavors that convey a suave mix of power and delicacy. Closes smooth, gently tannic and impressively long, leaving sappy red fruit and floral pastille notes behind.
    JD94+94–96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - September 26, 2018
More full-bodied, with incredible purity in its aromatics and fruit, the 2017 Gigondas Le Poste is another 100% Grenache cuvée that’s from a slightly higher elevation, terraced vineyard near the domaine. As with all the cuvées here, it’s not destemmed and is brought up mostly in used barrels. Offering lots of black currants, spice box, graphite, and licorice, it builds beautifully on the palate, has great concentration and intensity, and a blockbuster finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#52347

    JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 16, 2019
As to the reds, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a terrific classic cuvée that has loads of sweet red and blue fruits, crushed pepper, violets, and sappy garrigue aromas and flavors. A blend of 45% each of Grenache and Mourvèdre, with the balance Syrah, it’s medium-bodied, has a fresh, lively texture, terrific balance, and a good finish. It has an old-school vibe, terrific purity, and is well worth seeking out. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP90+90–92 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
Fortia’s 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 45% each Grenache and Mourvèdre, plus 10% Syrah. Full-bodied and harmonious, it shows considerably more richness and character than the very good 2016, while remaining supple and easy to drink. Cherry fruit dominates, picking up hints of dried spices on the silky finish. It should drink well for a decade.
