French wines and the appellations they come from are very diverse. That might be the reason why the French are currently the number one producers of wine and the number one consumers of wine.
France is blessed as both a cool-climate producer of wines in regions such as Burgundy, Champagne, Loire Valley, and Alsace where grapes like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling thrive, while the warmer ocean-influenced climate of Bordeaux allows for near perfect ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in most years. Even warmer sub-tropical influences can be tasted in the rich, extroverted, and largely Grenache-based wines of the Southern Rhone Valley such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as well as in Provence and the Languedoc/Roussillon located near the Mediterranean Sea in Southern France.

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Au Dessus des Carrières comes from two parcels planted mainly in the seventies. Vibrant again on the nose, this offers enticing scents of yellow plum, flint and subtle petrichor scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine depth, perhaps a little more linear than the Vieilles Vignes with a very focused finish. Excellent. Chablis like a Swiss watch! (Neal Martin)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022 Initially reductive notes of scorched earth and smoke in this wine dissipate with aeration, revealing pristine yellow apple and Mirabelle. Edged by a crush of oyster shells and salty mineral tones, this invigorating sip finishes on a whisper of white pepper. The wine is just starting to open now but should drink well through 2030. Iijima)VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2020 Chablis Vau de Vey 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with wild peach, light quince and flinty aromas, quite complex though I would not describe it as “intense”. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious, quite sappy towards the finish with decent length. Perhaps like the Butteaux, I would have liked a little more tension on the finish, but it should still give 8–10 years’ drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis. (Neal Martin)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Sainte Claire was showing a little too much SO2 on the nose, although there seems to be decent fruit tucked behind. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite tensile and steely with a precise finish that deserves a round of applause. This is well-crafted. VN89+89–91 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Village was picked as low as 20hl/ha in some parcels that were severely affected by frost. Nevertheless, it has a fresh and vibrant bouquet with fine mineralité and vivacity. “Classic Chablis” as Didier Picq tells me with what I am sure is a grin. The palate is fresh and taut, a fine saline undercurrent with a sharp and quite harmonious finish. You don’t find Chablis-Village much better than this in 2021. (Neal Martin)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Vieilles Vignes was acutely affected by the frost with Vaudécorse cropped at a paltry 9hl/ha. It has a flinty, tightly-wound bouquet that is focused and vibrant, yet somehow more “serious” than the Chablis-Villages. The palate is very well balanced with more depth and substance than the Chablis-Village, harmonious, lightly spiced with gorgeous lime and white peach notes towards the elegant finish. Wonderful. VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 The 2021 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru is the only cuvée with a normal yield (50hl/ha) as Didier warmed the vineyard with wax candles during the frost. It has a perfumed nose with hints of pressed white flowers and a light oyster shell tincture that emerges with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, perhaps the most saline of Picq’s cuvées with a long tail on the satisfying finish. Proper Chablis! (Neal Martin)

VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020 The 2018 Chablis Vaucoupin Premier Cru is a sensual, open-knit wine. A bit shy at first, it opens up beautifully in the mid-palate and finish, with striking layers of fruit that give the wine its racy, voluptuous feel. Tropical fruit, pastry, vanillin and sweet spice give the 2018 a lot of exotic character. This is an ample, creamy and open-knit wine with terrific persistence and tons of class; it is very refined for the year.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Jul 2022 The 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin opens in the glass with notes of pear, fresh peach, citrus confit, blanched almonds and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, it’s a precise, saline wine with terrific depth at the core and a racy, dynamic profile after the more powerful, weighty 2019 vintage. (William Kelley)VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021 The 2020 Chablis Vaucoupin 1er Cru has the best definition and clarity of Picq’s 2020s, delivering laser-like precision and vibrant citric fruit; blood orange scents develop with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with an intense saline entry, very good depth and a vibrant, lemongrass-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Superb. This would be my pick from Picq this year. This is another impeccably balanced, precise wine from Didier Picq. The palate is well balanced with a very saline entry, strict and linear in keeping with Picq’s style, and displays fine depth and a tang of bitter lemon and blood orange on the finish. Excellent. The palate is balanced with citrus lemon and orange pith, pretty like a Vau de Vey should be, though it does miss a bit of substance and grip on the finish.
