France is blessed as both a cool-climate producer of wines in regions such as Burgundy, Champagne, Loire Valley, and Alsace where grapes like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling thrive, while the warmer ocean-influenced climate of Bordeaux allows for near perfect ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in most years. Rich and intense yet silky textured and refined on the concentrated palate, this is a juicy, highly elegant, perfectly balanced, persistently salty and mouth-salivating Haut-Lieu with very fine tannins and a long, firm and pretty powerful but elegant and complex finish. Still more stringent than the Le Mont Demi-Sec in the beginning, but after aeration, this is not just a greatly finessed Chenin but one of the finest Haut-Lieu’s I have tasted from Huet. While this wine’s edges are rounded, it is refined and elegant. It has a sense of density on the mid-palate, but it’s not about weight or richness despite its demi-sec status. The wine has an intensity and a structured core reflecting the naturally low yields here. While there is 20g/L of residual sugar, a sense of freshness and underlying urgency pulls this wine through, leaving an off-dry impression. Unfinished sample. (Rebecca Gibb MW)
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Jul 2021 From south-facing slopes on the schistous soils of the Loire tributary, the 2018 Coteaux du Layon Moelleux Layon shows a radiant orange color and a brilliant, absolutely beautiful and elegant nose of perfectly ripe and stewed apricots intertwined with fresh, spicy-mineral and herbal notes as well as wax notes. Smooth and delicate on the palate, this is a seamless, perfectly balanced moelleux with fine, crystalline acidity and fully ripe and sweet, highly elegant and refined fruit. The finish is sensationally long and stimulating. This is a great Layon to have for its own, with cheese or an apricot tart. 11.5% alcohol. Tasted in June 2021. This stretches out midpalate, with great tension between acidity and sweetness, getting dryer on the finish. A very light hint of dried apricot lingers on the aftertaste. Round and refined yet still with a pretty firm tannin structure, this is a rich and powerful yet elegant and persistently salty Chenin with tension, grip and a sustainable, highly promising finish. The 2020 Clos du Bourg pairs juiciness with finesse and purity with complexity. Tasted as a tank sample shortly before bottling in April 2021.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021 This alluring white imparts both elegance and drive, with ginger, quince and marzipan notes edged with heather, mineral and peach accents. VN97+97–98 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 The 2020 Clos du Bourg Première Trie comes from a warm parcel and a warm vintage, meaning that the grapes were a little quicker to ripen than the norm — but it’s still outstanding. A richly, slightly smoky example with pineapple, orange, florals and agave nectar. Huge intensity and lots of sweet fruit (90g/L), yet it doesn’t become lush or heavy, the acidity still making your mouth water in spite of that sucrosity. There’s a fine chalky texture that lingers on the long finish. While it’s already a delight to encounter now, the combination of acidity and sweetness means this can go on and on. Tasted over three days as an unfinished sample, it was still fresh as a daisy. While it didn’t elicit the perfect 100-point goosebumps, there’s not a lot to fault here.SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021 This lush, refined wine boasts lots of complexity, with pineapple chutney, yellow fig paste, verbena and heather notes that are edged with crystalized ginger, mango, cardamom and mineral elements. Beautiful and enticing. Drink now through 2040. 330 cases made.RP96+96–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 The white-golden colored 2020 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux Première Trie shows CO2 pearls in the glass, and it indeed opens somewhat reductive, asking for a Burgundy glass. Yet even though the 2020 Clos du Bourg asks for patience, it already indicates a terribly concentrated bouquet of lemon chutney and humid chalk. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and juicy, very elegant and generous Chenin from this ancient six-hectare grand cru (one of the oldest in France, as the domaine assures). It is immediately attractive, stimulatingly piquant and nourishes hope for a great future. The potential is doubtlessly there, but 7–10 years of our patience is presumed. Tasted as a sample in May 2021.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2017 Gorgeous crystallized ginger, dried quince, glazed pear and warm persimmon notes are seamlessly interwoven here, gliding through a lengthy finish that picks up a lilting green tea accent. VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 It might be delicate but the 2020 Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is also rather succulent, coating the mouth with its sweet embrace. A combination of white flowers and nectarine creates an appealing perfume. There’s a sense of energy that runs through the wine, providing a sense of direction and purpose. The core of sweetness (50–60g/L) doesn’t tip over into lushness but is held together by its acidity and structure. (Rebecca Gibb MW)RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 The 2020 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux is clear, pure, fresh and concentrated on the lemon and pineapple-scented nose. You wouldn’t guess this is sweet from the nose, as the bouquet is precise and fresh. Round and mellow but also refined and elegant on the palate, with a stimulating mineral freshness and lingering salinity and piquancy, this is a gorgeous, very delicate and perfectly balanced Vouvray to drink even young, but as experience tells me, this Chenin Blanc from the now 15-hectare Ur vineyard of Domaine Huet can also be aged for decades, even if the wine is not really dramatic in all its pristine beauty. Tasted as final sample in May 2021.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 The deep brown clay soils of the Haut-Lieu plateau provide the typical fruitiness and freshness wonderfully in Huet’s 2019 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec. Ripe pear, tangerine and orange fruits with notes of lemon grass and green pimientos intertwined with very fine chalky and later tobacco notes give a remarkably fine, elegant and harmonious, subtly complex and simply gorgeous bouquet with floral (lime blossom!) and yeasty aromas that are immediately attractive. Delicate and linear on the palate, this is a pure, fresh, bone-dry, lean and textured, highly refined and perfectly interwoven Chenin with persistent purity, finesse, salty-mineral tension and very fine tannins. Highly finessed and so pure and vivacious! This is a chalky picture-book Haut-Lieu that can age for many years, even though it is already dangerously seductive! There was no dry Le Haut-Lieu produced in 2018, but the 2019 is possibly the finest, most delicate and elegant I’ve had in recent years, at least at this early stage. A terrific and buoyant Vouvray that any Chenin lover should try — or, better yet, cellar! 13% alcohol. 80,000 bottles made. Tasted in July 2020.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2022 This is a very fine, fragrant and floral Le Haut-Lieu Sec. While delicate, the 2021 fills the mouth with a cloud of pure fruit reminiscent of violets, apple and nectarine skin. There’s a fine sinew that pulls the wine through the finish. RP95+95–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 Pure, fresh and limey on the deep yet bright and precisely flinty-chalky nose, the 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Demi-Sec is a Chenin full of crunchy energy and charm, thanks to its concentrated but round and lush fruit. This full-bodied wine is intense, tight and long but also finessed and vibrantly fresh on the finish, which reveals this crunchy flint stone structure and tension that guarantees an ability to age for decades, though the wine is already dangerously stimulating today. Tasted as a tank sample a few days before bottling in April 2021.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021 This refined white shows lovely purity, with persimmon, coriander, yellow apple and creamed peach notes, backed by vivid acidity. RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 The 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux offers a deep, complex and concentrated bouquet of highly ripe and candied fruits yet with this coolish shimmering lime zest probably coming from the pebbly silex and deep green clay soil of this nine-hectare “grand cru.” Full-bodied, rich and round on the palate, this is a dense, viscous, mouth-filling, lush and mellow yet also tight and piquant Le Mont whose complexity is lifted by dramatic drive and tension and carried to a long and salivating finish by lingering salinity. You can never go wrong in buying a Le Mont and in particular this one. This is a great effort from a very particular vintage that forced the harvest team to make the strictest selections. It was well worth the effort. (Stephan Reinhardt)VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2021 There are many shouty wines in the world, but the 2020 Le Mont Moelleux is understated, which is highly attractive. There’s finesse and elegance to this sweeter style (49g/L). Delicate exotic characters such as dried papaya and pineapple sit alongside floral notes. While there’s excellent concentration, this remains delicate. The finish is appetizing thanks to fine acidity and phenolic structure, which hold the mouth reassuringly on the finish. An excellent wine that offers real drinkability in youth thanks to its appealing primary fruit, but there’s no hurry at all to drink. A smidgen more length would take it into even higher realms (although, let’s be fair, it’s not far off as good as it gets) (Rebecca Gibb MW)
