France is blessed as both a cool-climate producer of wines in regions such as Burgundy, Champagne, Loire Valley, and Alsace where grapes like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling thrive, while the warmer ocean-influenced climate of Bordeaux allows for near perfect ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in most years. JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/25/2022 Moving to the reds, the 2020 Vacqueyras Les Hauts De La Ponche is 50% Grenache and 25% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. It actually reminds me of a Pomerol with its red and blue fruits as well as bouquet garni, damp earth, and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, I love its balance, and it has silky tannins and remarkable purity of fruit. Drink bottles over the coming 7–8 years. VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021 The 2020 Saint-Bris Exogyra Virgula, which was taken from tank, has a light apple blossom bouquet with a lovely lemon thyme scent. The palate is fresh, vibrant and very saline, delivering good density and flavors of green apple mixed with pear toward the finish. Superb. (Neal Martin)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022 Initially reductive notes of scorched earth and smoke in this wine dissipate with aeration, revealing pristine yellow apple and Mirabelle. Edged by a crush of oyster shells and salty mineral tones, this invigorating sip finishes on a whisper of white pepper. The wine is just starting to open now but should drink well through 2030. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious, quite sappy towards the finish with decent length. JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/29/2023 The 2020 Château Tour Saint Christophe showed spectacularly well, and based off past vintages, this shouldn’t surprise anyone. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 40% new barrels (the balance is in second- and third-fill oak), it offers a full-bodied, incredibly pure, balanced style revealing subtle oak, terrific darker, almost blue fruits, lots of chocolate, leafy herb and mineral nuances, and gorgeous tannins. It’s worth pointing out that this will be the last vintage made by the talented Jérôme Aguirre. This terrific Saint-Emilion will evolve for two decades. It’s a modern, crowd-pleasing wine from clay-rich soils opposite Troplong Mondot in the commune Saint Christophe des Bardes.
